The make a huge difference to all who need our Centenary marking the end of World War1 help. was, I think, one that we will find difficult to Mike Herbert | RBL Thornton Branch forget in future years. The time of Remembrance means different things to us all, some reflect on happenings and some simply honour the fallen. This year we have all being brought starkly into contact with some of the horrors of conflict through the media and events commissioned to commemorate ‘The Centenary’. Yet throughout Remembrance we have also highlighted the ‘now and the future’ because that is the reality of what conflict does. We have witnessed many examples in our local district of how the past impacts on the now and the future. Everything from our Primary School displays and projects, to local events and displays and the use of the famous ‘Soldier Silhouettes’ and inspirational public scenes – as on the roundabout in Clayton – and at the many War Memorials across the district. Our own two primary schools, Thornton and Keelham were involved with song and poetry and the Scouts Groups and ACF Cadets and Camo Crew were there too. The Remembrance Wreaths were incredible and inclusive with acknowledgement paid to the Commonwealth and Dominions, Volunteers and the Veterans of Russia. The Poppy Appeal has just finished but the work it funds never stops, that’s what the Appeal is all about. In Thornton our Churches held Coffee Mornings, Exhibitions and Fellowship Meetings, and the ‘Clubs and Pubs’ supported the Poppy Appeal and many of our local shops did so too, thank you. We have also had great help from the Ahmadiayya Muslim Women’s Association and the Nasirat-ul-Ahmadiyya, Bradford North.

Sapgate Gardens Association If you’re on Facebook, take a look at our page for all the latest news and details of all our It has been a busy Autumn and the garden has volunteering and activity days in the garden. really transformed this season. The summer crops have said goodbye and the leafy greens in all shapes and varieties have come into their own. New garden seating has been built, planting areas developed, dry stone walls made and as ever, lots of weeding, preparing the soil and caring for the more natural wildlife area. It feels like we have gardened in all weathers, so thank you to everyone who has come out to get involved every week. Our last Saturday of the month gardening and activity days have been really well attended and it has been lovely to see so many new faces. We had a fantastic time at our pumpkin day with treasure hunts, pumpkin carving and toasting marshmallows. This was followed by our bird feeder day where everyone got creative having fun squidging fat and seed into cookie cutter shapes to help our feathered friends over winter. The bird feeding theme will continue as we decorate a tree for the Christmas Tree Festival at St James this month with some of your feeders and other natural items and crocheted birds.

As well as gardening, coming to activities, donating resources or just enjoying being in the garden, there are other ways you can support all we do too. Over winter we are trying to raise funds ready for next year. You can pop a coin or two in our bucket at the tree festival, nominate us as your chosen charity to receive a donation each time you shop if you are a Co-op member or pop a donation in our collecting tins which will be appearing in local pubs, shops and businesses over the coming months.
