Backus--2 Biography Isaac Backus was born in Norwich, Connecticut, January 9, 1724. Little is known of his childhood. In "An acccmnt of the life of Isaac Backus" (completed to 1756), he provides genealogical information and then begins a detailed chronicle of events leading to his religious conversion and his life after that point. In response to preaching of the Great Awakening, in 1741 Backus joined the Standing church in Norwich. The Norwich minister was distressed that the converts caused too much agitation and after a few years refused to invite itinerant New Lights, so in 1746 Backus and several other church members withdrew and formed a New Light church. In 1748 Backus became minister of a New Light church in Middleborough, Massachusetts; he continued his association with the New Lights until 1756, when he withdrew because of his opposition to infant baptism. He organized a Separate Baptist church in Middleborough and remained as minister there until his death. Backus published a large number of tracts and a 3-volume history of the Baptist denomination. His two major concerns are reflected in these works: unification of the Separate Baptists and the struggle against religious taxation as part of efforts to achieve religious freedom. Throughout his professional career Backus travelled extensively in New England, helping to organize churches and settle disputes among various Baptist groups. The Warren Baptist Association was established in 1767; Backus was a member of the Grievance Committee formed to work toward elimination of persecution by civil authorities. As an agent of the Committee he worked to keep the issue of separation of church and state before the general public; and in 1774 he travelled to Philadelphia with other Baptists to seek assistance from the First Continental Congress. In his later years, Backus continued to be a spokesman for Baptists. He argued for ratification of the U.S. Constitution in 1790, convinced that in effect it stood for separation of church and state by prohibiting any religious test for officeholders. In 1796 he published the third volume of his History, and in 1803 an Abridgement. Backus died in Middleborough, November 20, 1806. Backus--3 Scope and Content The Isaac Backus Papers, 1660-1806, consist of two major components: personal papers and collected papers. The Personal Papers (1746-1806) document the professional work of Backus, and are arranged according to the following categories: diary, travel journal, autobiographical statements, ordination booklet, sermons, publications, unpublished manuscripts, and extracts from readings. A card index, prepared by Brown University personnel, provides main entry access to the diary. The diary and index are published: William G. McLaughlin, ed., The Diary of Isaac Backus, 3 vols. (Providence: Brown University Press, 1979) The Collected Papers (1660-1806) are primarily correspondence and narratives chronicling the Separate Baptist struggle for religious freedom, gathered by Backus. This section also includes all correspondence of Backus and extant records of the Warren Baptist Association. A card index, prepared by Brown University personnel, provides main entry access to the Collected Papers. The index is divided into three general categories: Baptist History, Letters, Warren Association. The following usage notes may be helpful in working with individual indexes: Baptist History -- The scope of the index is self-explanatory. IB references include letters of IB to others and IB as the subject of a specific document. Letters -- The index includes letters of others to IB. Warren Association -- The index includes annual letters of individual churches to the association and correspondence dealing with business related to the annual meeting. The index also provides subject access to the unpublished manuscript, "History of the Warren Association. 11 Backus--4 Box 1 Diary volume 2 July 29, 1751 - July 25, 1752 volume 3 July 26, 1752 - April 13, 1755 volume 4 April 20, 1755 - June 28, 1759 volume 6 July 20, 1763 - October 11, 1767 volume 7 October 13, 1767 - October 23, 1771 volume 8 October 25, 1771 - December 31, 1775 volume 9 January 7, 1776 - July 27, 1780 volume 10 July 28, 1780 - December 31, 1784 volume 12 June 21, 1789 - December 28, 1796 volume 13 January 1, 1797 - December 31, 1802 volume 14 January 2, 1803 - March 16, 1806 Box 2 ~l journal List of journies, 1748-1802 Account of journies, September 27, 1746 - December 3, 1747 (bound with List of journies) Account of journies, November 9, 1749 - November 19, 1774 Autobiographical statements no date Reasons of separation 1746-1750 Some brief account of my travels and experiences 1748-1749 A few things concerning marriage 1751 Some particular account of my conversion 1752 .Some particular account of my settling into ministry in ye joining borders of Bridgewater and Middleborough 1756 Reasons of my withdrawing communion with Paedobaptists, which I once stood with An account of the life of Isaac Backus (completed to January 1, 1756) 1760-1769 Day book Ordination booklet An account of ordinations, February 1746 - September 1805 Sermons Ace.aunt of texts preacht from, September 13, 1757 - April 6, 1777 no date fragments (2) 2 Corinthians 3:3 Genesis 42:36 2 Corinthians 5:7 Job 34: 21 Ephesians 6:1 Psalm 49:20 2 Thessalonians 2:8 Proverbs 13: 10 1 Timothy 4: 12 Ecclesiastes 3:11 1 Timothy 6:17-19 Ecclesiastes 7:16 He brews 8: 8-11 Hosea 13:6 James 1: 25 Matthew 28:19-20 James 3: 1 Luke 7:9 2 Peter 2:19 Romans 10:2 Revelation 11: 3 Romans 11: 7 Backus--5 Box 2 Sermons cont. 1749 Feb. 23 Ezekiel 33:7 Oct. 29 Hebrews 11:39 (bound with 2/23/1749) Nov. 29 Acts 13:36 1750 Mar. 5 John 9:4 (bound with 2/23/1749) 17 Proverbs 13:20 [24] Hosea 4:17 (bound with 3/17/1750) 1751 Jan. 20 Matthew 7:26-27 (bound with n.d./2 Corinthians 5:17) Feb. 4 1 John 3:7 (bound with n.d./2 Corinthians 5:17) 17 Ephesians 4:30 (bound with n.d./2 Corinthians 5:17) Sept. 22 Proverbs 26:20 (bound with n.d./2 Corinthians 5:17) 1755 Aug. 10 James 1:18 (bound with n.d./2 Corinthians 5:17) 1756 Dec. 26 Psalm 119:111 1757 Jan. 9 Proverbs 6: 6-8 23 Proverbs 13:15 1759 Feb. 25 Job 36: 2 1761 July 26 Ezekiel 1:5 1765 Feb. 10 Micah 4: 11 Sept. 11 Revelation 2:1 1766 Feb. 23 Deuteronomy 32:2 (bound with n.d./2 Corinthians 5:17 May 25 1 Peter 1:7 25 Matthew 9: 38 June 29 Proverbs 21:16 July 24 Galatians 5:13 Oct. 19 Genesis 17:1 19 John 6:32 1768 Oct. 2 Habakkuk 2: 13 Dec. 25 Romans 5: 14 1769 Jan. 8 1 Peter 2: 11 Mar. 3 1 Thessalonians 5:21 Apr. 16 Acts 17:26-27 30 Romans 7:1 July 30 1 John 5:3 Backus--6 ---Box 2 Sermons cont. 1770 Jan. 7 Genesis 8:21 30 Romans 12:2 Feb. 20 Proverbs 23: 14 25 Isaiah 61: 2 Apr. 2 Isaiah 28:29 5 Numbers 11: 20 May 3 Colossians 2:19 July 8 Hebrews 4:2 Aug. 19 Galatians 5:16 26 1 Corinthians Sept. 2 1 Peter 2:24 Nov. 18 Proverbs 21:2 1771 Mar. 17 Deuteronomy 18:15 July 23 Deuteronomy 8: 5 28 Matthew 25:8-9 Aug. 4 Mark 4:26-28 29 Luke 9:23 Sept. 21 Psalm 27:10 22 Isaiah 26: 19 22 Isaiah 29:24 Oct. 2 Philemon 1: 18 1772 Jan. 29 Psalm 112: 7 Feb. n.d.
