  • In the Studio: the Role of Recording Techniques in Rock Music (2006)
21 In the Studio: The Role of Recording Techniques in Rock Music (2006) John Covach I want this record to be perfect. Meticulously perfect. Steely Dan-perfect. -Dave Grohl, commencing work on the Foo Fighters 2002 record One by One When we speak of popular music, we should speak not of songs but rather; of recordings, which are created in the studio by musicians, engineers and producers who aim not only to capture good performances, but more, to create aesthetic objects. (Zak 200 I, xvi-xvii) In this "interlude" Jon Covach, Professor of Music at the Eastman School of Music, provides a clear introduction to the basic elements of recorded sound: ambience, which includes reverb and echo; equalization; and stereo placement He also describes a particularly useful means of visualizing and analyzing recordings. The student might begin by becoming sensitive to the three dimensions of height (frequency range), width (stereo placement) and depth (ambience), and from there go on to con sider other special effects. One way to analyze the music, then, is to work backward from the final product, to listen carefully and imagine how it was created by the engineer and producer. To illustrate this process, Covach provides analyses .of two songs created by famous producers in different eras: Steely Dan's "Josie" and Phil Spector's "Da Doo Ron Ron:' Records, tapes, and CDs are central to the history of rock music, and since the mid 1990s, digital downloading and file sharing have also become significant factors in how music gets from the artists to listeners. Live performance is also important, and some groups-such as the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, and more recently Phish and Widespread Panic-have been more oriented toward performances that change from night to night than with authoritative versions of tunes that are produced in a recording studio.

  • PRESS RELEASE May 2014
STELLA BASS Dubliner Stella Bass studied singing and piano accordion from a young age. Following a spectacularly non-rebellious and well-behaved youth in which jettisoning piano accordion studies in favour of completing a degree in Computer Science in University College Dublin was the highlight, Stella later took up the piano, taking singing and piano exams at the RIAM in Dublin and is currently studying for a Masters Degree in Jazz Performance. Studying is one thing, but music is best honed through performance. Many years of singing in musicals, bands (her first one being a rock covers band!) and cabarets helped her finely-tune her craft; running parallel to this was a successful career in marketing and public relations. Combining study and on- the-job gigging has generated a versatile repertoire crossing over jazz, classical and musical theatre; having long since abandoned the corporate world for music, Stella is still most at home singing her beloved jazz standards, inspired by her big influences, Ella Fitzgerald and Barbra Streisand. In 2014, Stella released her first album “Too Darn Hot" - featuring songs from Cole Porter (the title track) and Jerome Kern as well as newly-arranged songs by Amy Winehouse and Robert Palmer – to critical acclaim; indeed, upon hearing Stella's album cover of her daughter's song Back to Black, Amy Winehouse’s mother got in touch with Stella directly to say how much she loved the version, and indeed that Stella's album was being played non-stop in her house! The album gets regular radio airplay on the national airwaves in Ireland – it was Album of the Week on Lyric FM, part of Ireland's national channel RTE on its release - and is now starting to make waves on jazz stations in the UK, the USA, Germany and Switzerland.

THE SAME OLD BLUES CRAP: SELLING THE BLUES AT FAT POSSUM RECORDS A Thesis presented in partial fulfillment of requirements for the Master of Arts in Southern Studies The University of Mississippi JACQUI SAHAGIAN MAY 2018 Copyright © 2018 by Jacqui Sahagian All rights reserved ABSTRACT This thesis interrogates the marketing strategies of the Oxford, Mississippi-based record label Fat Possum, which was founded in the early 1990s by Matthew Johnson with the goal of recording obscure hill country blues artists. Fat Possum gained recognition for its raw-sounding recordings of bluesmen, including R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Cedell Davis, and T-Model Ford, as well as its irreverent marketing techniques. Adopting the tagline “not the same old blues crap,” Fat Possum asserted that its blues were both different from and superior to all other blues music. This thesis argues that while Fat Possum claimed to be a disruptive force in the blues world, the label actually repeated marketing strategies that have been used to sell the blues since the genre was first sold during the 1920s race records era.

CAL PERFORMANCES AT UC BERKELEY PRESENTS HOT SARDINES AND JASON MORAN CELEBRATES FATS WALLER AT THE PARAMOUNT THEATRE IN OAKLAND SATURDAY, MARCH 11 Berkeley, January 25, 2017 — Cal Performances presents The Hot Sardines and Jason Moran Celebrates Fats Waller in a specially paired double bill of 1920s-inspired vintage jazz dance bands at Oakland’s historic Deco masterpiece, the Paramount Theatre, on Saturday, March 11 at 8pm. The concert with the Hot Sardines, one of New York City’s most popular “hot jazz” groups, and Jason Moran Celebrates Fats Waller, featuring the relentlessly creative pianist and musical explorer Jason Moran, marks the first time audiences have the opportunity to enjoy the two bands together on the same bill. Cal Performances / Hot Sardines and Jason Moran Celebrates Fats Waller, page 2 About Hot Sardines Formed by bandleader Evan “Bibs” Palazzo and lead singer “Miz Elizabeth” Bougerol, who began playing open mic nights and small gigs together, the Hot Sardines count Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday among their myriad influences. Their music echoes the joy and pizzazz of Parisian cabaret-style songs, the early jazz of New Orleans, gypsy jazz and swing, and the irresistibly danceable speakeasy sounds of the Roaring 20s. Elizabeth Bougerol, a London School of Economics-educated travel writer who grew up in France, Canada and the Ivory Coast, and Palazzo, a New York City-born and -raised actor who studied theater at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, bonded over their love for Fats Waller.

  • Grunge and Blues, a Sociological Comparison: How Space and Place Influence the Development and Spread of Regional Musical Styles
Grunge and Blues, A Sociological Comparison: How Space and Place Influence the Development and Spread of Regional Musical Styles Tara Talley Introduction In the early 1990’s, a new type of rock music exploded onto the popular music scene in America. Labeled “grunge” by the media, this new sound was seemingly an overnight hit with America’s youth. The rise of grunge may seem extraordinary and unique to many who experienced it. However, the birth and spread of grunge was not a new phenomenon. Other types of popular American music have come about in a similar fashion. One example is the rise of the Delta blues in the first decades of the 20th century. The genesis and spread of both Delta blues and grunge have several important details in common. First, the birth of both types of music can be understood using the sociological idea of historical contingency; moreover, Delta blues and grunge were influenced by similar contingencies. Second, both went from being strictly regional music to attaining national popularity through essentially identical marketing strategies. Large music corporations marketed Delta blues, to both blacks and whites, as a more authentic representation of the black experience, taking full advantage of the recording and home entertainment technology of the time. Seven decades later, grunge became a national phenomenon via this same strategy, marketing grunge as the “authentic” music of America’s dissatisfied white youth, and exploiting the current music technology, especially MTV. Third, both Delta blues and grunge foster a sense of social solidarity in fans. This paper investigates the social processes that create and spread unique musical forms.
