  • Earnest Walker Jr
EARNEST WALKER JR. Smooth Groove Artist Earnest Walker Jr. spent the first 15 years of his life traveling the country with his family. The experience taught him an appreciation of different cultures and musical styles. At the age of nine, Walker started playing the guitar, but a year later he picked up the saxophone and it has been his passion ever since. When he was only 14 years old, the established musicians in Pensacola, Florida felt his playing was so essential they would sneak Walker into night clubs to showcase his talents. Walker studied music education at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, and later attended Florida State University, quickly establishing himself as one of the most sought-after saxophonists on both campuses and all around the state of Florida. After college, Walker joined the Air Force, where he performed with different groups in each town he was stationed. After the military, Walker toured and performed in most of the central to eastern portions of the country, including Miami, Daytona Beach, Charleston SC, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Atlanta, Tampa, Orlando and Denver. In the late 90’s, he moved to Philadelphia and became a member of the prestigious smooth jazz band “Blind Date”. Returning to Miami in 2003, Earnest Walker Jr is well known in the city of South Beach as a show stopper that is sure to leave the audience breathless. • In the Studio: the Role of Recording Techniques in Rock Music (2006)
21 In the Studio: The Role of Recording Techniques in Rock Music (2006) John Covach I want this record to be perfect. Meticulously perfect. Steely Dan-perfect. -Dave Grohl, commencing work on the Foo Fighters 2002 record One by One When we speak of popular music, we should speak not of songs but rather; of recordings, which are created in the studio by musicians, engineers and producers who aim not only to capture good performances, but more, to create aesthetic objects. (Zak 200 I, xvi-xvii) In this "interlude" Jon Covach, Professor of Music at the Eastman School of Music, provides a clear introduction to the basic elements of recorded sound: ambience, which includes reverb and echo; equalization; and stereo placement He also describes a particularly useful means of visualizing and analyzing recordings. The student might begin by becoming sensitive to the three dimensions of height (frequency range), width (stereo placement) and depth (ambience), and from there go on to con sider other special effects. One way to analyze the music, then, is to work backward from the final product, to listen carefully and imagine how it was created by the engineer and producer. To illustrate this process, Covach provides analyses .of two songs created by famous producers in different eras: Steely Dan's "Josie" and Phil Spector's "Da Doo Ron Ron:' Records, tapes, and CDs are central to the history of rock music, and since the mid 1990s, digital downloading and file sharing have also become significant factors in how music gets from the artists to listeners. Live performance is also important, and some groups-such as the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, and more recently Phish and Widespread Panic-have been more oriented toward performances that change from night to night than with authoritative versions of tunes that are produced in a recording studio.

  • EARTH, WIND & FIRE -‐ Bio XRIJF JUNE 20-‐28, 2014 During the 1970S
EARTH, WIND & FIRE - Bio During the 1970s, a new brand of pop music was born - one that was steeped in African and African- American styles - particularly jazz and R&B but appealed to a broader cross-section of the listening public. As founder and leader of the band Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White not only embraced but also helped bring about this evolution of pop, which bridged the gap that has often separated the musical tastes of black and white America. It certainly was successful, as EWF combined high-caliber musicianship, wide-ranging musical genre eclecticism, and '70s multicultural spiritualism. "I wanted to do something that hadn't been done before," Maurice explains. "Although we were basically jazz musicians, we played soul, funk, gospel, blues, jazz, rock and dance music...which somehow ended up becoming pop. We were coming out of a decade of experimentation, mind expansion and cosmic awareness. I wanted our music to convey messages of universal love and harmony without force- feeding listeners' spiritual content." Maurice was born December 19, 1941, in Memphis, TN. He was immersed in a rich musical culture that spanned the boundaries between jazz, gospel, R&B, blues and early rock. All of these styles played a role in the development of Maurice's musical identity. At age six, he began singing in his church's gospel choir but soon his interest turned to percussion. He began working gigs as a drummer while still in high school. His first professional performance was with Booker T. Jones, who eventually achieved stardom as Booker T and the MGs.

  • PRESS RELEASE May 2014
STELLA BASS Dubliner Stella Bass studied singing and piano accordion from a young age. Following a spectacularly non-rebellious and well-behaved youth in which jettisoning piano accordion studies in favour of completing a degree in Computer Science in University College Dublin was the highlight, Stella later took up the piano, taking singing and piano exams at the RIAM in Dublin and is currently studying for a Masters Degree in Jazz Performance. Studying is one thing, but music is best honed through performance. Many years of singing in musicals, bands (her first one being a rock covers band!) and cabarets helped her finely-tune her craft; running parallel to this was a successful career in marketing and public relations. Combining study and on- the-job gigging has generated a versatile repertoire crossing over jazz, classical and musical theatre; having long since abandoned the corporate world for music, Stella is still most at home singing her beloved jazz standards, inspired by her big influences, Ella Fitzgerald and Barbra Streisand. In 2014, Stella released her first album “Too Darn Hot" - featuring songs from Cole Porter (the title track) and Jerome Kern as well as newly-arranged songs by Amy Winehouse and Robert Palmer – to critical acclaim; indeed, upon hearing Stella's album cover of her daughter's song Back to Black, Amy Winehouse’s mother got in touch with Stella directly to say how much she loved the version, and indeed that Stella's album was being played non-stop in her house! The album gets regular radio airplay on the national airwaves in Ireland – it was Album of the Week on Lyric FM, part of Ireland's national channel RTE on its release - and is now starting to make waves on jazz stations in the UK, the USA, Germany and Switzerland.
