THE EDGE OF EUROPE: HERITAGE, LANDSCAPE AND CONFLICT ARCHAEOLOGY by ROXANA-TALIDA ROMAN A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology School of History and Cultures College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham May 2019 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT The research presented in this thesis addresses the significance of Romanian WWI sites as places of remembrance and heritage, by exploring the case of Maramureș against the standards of national and international heritage standards. The work provided the first ever survey of WWI sites on the Eastern Front, showing that the Prislop Pass conflictual landscape holds undeniable national and international heritage value both in terms of physical preservation and in terms of mapping on the memorial-historical record. The war sites demonstrate heritage and remembrance value by meeting heritage criteria on account of their preservation state, rarity, authenticity, research potential, the embedded war knowledge and their historical-memorial functions. The results of the research established that the war sites not only satisfy heritage legal requirements at various scales but are also endangered.

  • CHAPTER THREE Ptolemaic Poleis and Places in Dacia and In
CHAPTER THREE Ptolemaic Poleis and Places in Dacia and in Adjacent Areas. What We Know Some of the reference places mentioned for Dacia and the neighboring regions are well known, others not as much. Considering what we know must be the first step. Any identification of some poleis in Dacia and in the neighboring areas that could help the identification of the others constitutes main information. This is why I will begin any analysis from the data given below, from various editions of Ptolemy’s Geography, from manuscripts to printed editions. Once I will mention the Greek and Latin parallel names that appeared in various editions of Ptolemy, to simplify, I may work further mainly with only one of the names referred to a particular polis or place. The chapter for Δακίας ϑέσις / Daciae situs / The arrangement of Dacia (Εὐρώπης πίναξ ϑ′./ Europae tabula nona) in Ptolemy is book 3, chapter 8. He begins by defining the borders: Dacia is bordered on the north by the European part of Sarmatia, which is from the Carpathian mountain up to the end, where the mentioned inflexion of the river Tyras, is placed, as we said, at 53° 48°30′80; at west, (it is bordered by) the Resettled Iazyges [Ἰάζυγες οἱ Μετανάσται/ Iazyges Metanastæ], on the river Tibiscum [Τιβίσκον ποταμόν/ T. fluvium]; and at south by a part of the Danube river [ὁ Δανούβιος ποταμόν/ Danubium fluvium], from the mouth 80 Always longitude first, then latitude, in Ptolemy’s manner. The same in the Ξ- recesnion’s mss. X, represented by Ptolemaeus, “Geographia,” in Codex Vaticanus Palatinus Graecus 191.

1. E felirat Ó-Budán találtatott 1882-ben; jelenleg a nemz. múzeumban őriztetik. •'.-,'. 144 Olvasd: Fortunáé Aug(ustae)sacr(um);C(aius) Val(erius) Valentin(us) (duum)vir et C(aius) Jul(ius) Victorinus et P(ublius) Petronius Clemens aedilici(i), dec(uriones) mun(icipii) Aq(uincensis) aram ex voio posuer(unt) (ante diem) (tertium) Idus Septembr(es) Falcone et Claw co(n)s(ulibus).

  • The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire: Volume IV by Edward Gibbon
HISTORY OF THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE By Edward Gibbon VOLUME IV This is volume four of the six volumes of Edward Gibbon's History Of The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire. I will be scanning and putting out on the net the remaining volumes as I find time to do this. So have patience. If you find any errors please feel free to notify me of them. I want to make this the best etext edition possible for both scholars and the general public. [email protected] and [email protected] are my email addresses for now. Please feel free to send me your comments and I hope you enjoy this. David Reed History Of The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire Edward Gibbon, Esq. With notes by the Rev. H. H. Milman Vol. 4 1782 (Written), 1845 (Revised) Chapter XXXIX: Gothic Kingdom Of Italy. Part I. Zeno And Anastasius, Emperors Of The East. - Birth, Education, And First Exploits Of Theodoric The Ostrogoth. - His Invasion And Conquest Of Italy. - The Gothic Kingdom Of Italy. - State Of The West. - Military And Civil Government. - The Senator Boethius. - Last Acts And Death Of Theodoric. After the fall of the Roman empire in the West, an interval of fifty years, till the memorable reign of Justinian, is faintly marked by the obscure names and imperfect annals of Zeno, Anastasius, and Justin, who successively ascended to the throne of Constantinople. During the same period, Italy revived and flourished under the government of a Gothic king, who might have deserved a statue among the best and bravest of the ancient Romans.

  • Movement, the Senses and Representations of the Roman World: Experiencing the Sebasteion in Aphrodisias Joanna Kemp*
Exchanges : the Warwick Research Journal Movement, the Senses and Representations of the Roman World: Experiencing the Sebasteion in Aphrodisias Joanna Kemp* Department of Classics and Ancient History, University of Warwick *Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract This article examines the Sebasteion – a complex for emperor- worship built in the first century AD - in Aphrodisias, modern Turkey, and studies its political and ideological messages when the sensory experiences of the spectators are considered. The monument contained geographical representations of the peoples of the Roman world placed above a portico. Previous studies of this monument focus upon close and repeated visual study to gain an idea of a powerful empire, but this is not how the contemporary audience would have experienced it. During a religious procession the spectators were moving past static images situated high above them, with many other stimuli, which could distract from or add to the intended ideological messages of the monument. Therefore this article considers movement and architecture as part of the sensory experience and illustrates that these would have affected the audience’s encounters, which in turn could affect perceptions of the Roman world. CHAPTER 2 Moving Peoples in the Early Roman Empire1 Greg Woolf 1 Six Thousand Years of Enclosure The opening pages of James C. Scott’s The Art of Not Being Governed offer a global account of the political economy and ecology of early states. The first states, for Scott, were miniscule authoritarian regimes nestled on arable plains and plateaux and surrounded by vast ungoverned peripheries of mountain, marshland, swamp, steppe and desert. Around them peripheral populations were both natural trading partners—because the ecologies of their respective homes were so different—and a constant threat. Peripheral populations posed a double threat in fact since they not only periodically raided the plains, but also represented an alternative, freer way of life, an object lesson in “the art of not being governed”. For Scott, whose expertise is in the societies of South East Asia, the story of the last six thousand years has been one of enclosure. States have strived to tame their peripheral ‘barbarians’, subjecting them to taxes and the levy, to slavery and government. Subjected peoples were put to work to increase the agricultural surpluses on which states depended and to build the monuments that now constitute the principal record of their efforts. That history of enclo- sure has been a discontinuous one, since in the remote past states often col- lapsed, their subject populations melting away into the forests and mountains until the next episode of state building. Only in the last few centuries has the option of avoiding the state altogether more or less disappeared. But for most of history there has been a range of social options.2 To historians of the ancient Mediterranean world the proposition that ancient state building was all about enclosing human populations and putting them to work is unfamiliar.
