By Michael Angelo Tata So when the doorbell rang the night before, it was Liza in a hat pulled down so nobody would recognize her, and she said to Halston, “Give me every drug you’ve got.” So he gave her a bottle of coke, a few sticks of marijuana, a Valium, four Quaaludes, and they were all wrapped in a tiny box, and then a little figure in a white hat came up on the stoop and kissed Halston, and it was Marty Scorsese, he’d been hiding around the corner, and then he and Liza went off to have their affair on all the drugs ( Diaries , Tuesday, January 3, 1978). Privileged Intake Of all the creatures who populate and punctuate Warhol’s worlds—drag queens, hustlers, movie stars, First Wives—the drug user and abuser retains a particular access to glamour. Existing along a continuum ranging from the occasional substance dilettante to the hard-core, raging junkie, the consumer of drugs preoccupies Warhol throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s. Their actions and habits fascinate him, his screens become the sacred place where their rituals are projected and packaged. Tournant le dos à l’abstraction et cherchant à atteindre une représenta- tion minutieuse de la nature au point que les spectateurs se demandent parfois s’ils ont affaire au corps vivant, l’artiste hyper- réaliste crée une oeuvre tantôt amusante, tantôt dérangeante, et toujours pour- voyeuse de sens. Avec une sélection d’une cinquantaine de sculptures hyperréalistes d’artistes internationaux de premier plan (George Segal, Ron Mueck, Maurizio Cattelan, Ber- linde De Bruyckere, Duane Hanson, John De Andrea…), l’exposition Hyperrealism Sculpture - Ceci n’est pas un corps. rendra compte de l’évolution de la figure humaine dans la sculpture de ce courant des années 1970 à nos jours. La sélection mettra en évidence différents problèmes clés dans l’approche de la représentation du réalisme figuratif afin de souligner la façon dont notre vision de notre corps a évolué sans cesse. Le titre de l’exposition fait référence à la célèbre oeuvre de René Magritte « Ceci n’est pas une pipe », qui questionnait le rapport de l’art à la réalité. HUNT SLONEM - Biography Hunt Slonem was born on July 18, 1951 in Kittery, Maine, and his father’s position as a Navy officer meant the family moved often during Hunt’s formative years, including extended stays in Hawaii, California and Connecticut. He would continue to seek out travel opportunities throughout his young-adult years, studying abroad in Nicaragua and Mexico; these eye-opening experiences imbued him with an appreciation for tropical landscapes that would influence his unique style. After graduating with a degree in painting and art history from Tulane University in New Orleans, Slonem spent several years in the early 1970s living in Manhattan. It wasn’t until Janet Fish offered him her studio for the summer of 1975 that Slonem was able to fully immerse himself in his work. His pieces began getting exhibited around New York, propelling his reputation and thrusting him into the city’s explosive contemporary arts scene. He received several prestigious grants, including from Montreal’s Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Cultural Counsel Foundation’s Artist Project, for which he painted an 80-foot mural of the World Trade Center in the late 1970s. He also received an introduction to the Marlborough Gallery, which would represent him for 18 years. As Slonem honed his aesthetic, his work began appearing in unique, contextual spaces. By 1995 he finished a massive six-by-86-foot mural of birds, which shoots across the walls of the Bryant Park Grill Restaurant in New York City. His charity work has resulted dozens of partnerships, including a wallpaper of his famous bunnies designed specifically with Lee Jofa for the Ronald McDonald House in Long Island. -
