Sixty-four specimens (72 %) were recorded in the Aegean Sea, followed by 19 records (21.5 %) from the Sea of Marmara and 5 records (5.6 %) from the Mediterranean Sea. Total length of the recorded specimens (sexes combined) ranged from 22.5 cm to 79 cm. Bottom-trawling was the main fi shing gear (n = 64, 72 %), by which most angular rough sharks have been caught, followed by beam-trawl (n = 3, 3.3 %), gill-net (n = 3, 3.3 %) and long-line (n = 1, 1.1 %). Seven specimens (7.8 %) were recorded by means of visual sampling (underwater imaging), all of which were carried out in the Sea of Marmara. O. centrina is a rare and threatened deep-sea shark in the eastern Mediterranean and adjacent seas. Capture of pregnant females creates a signifi cant threat to the survival of the species, thus, before the implementation of evidence-based measures for the conservation, and even a ban on the fi shing of O. centrina, promoting fi shermen to release live specimens, appears to be an urgent, feasible fi rst step in the protection of this rare species. The orchids did not fail to delight everyone with an incredible selection of species seen during the week. The other flora was equally spectacular with lovely displays of Narcissi, Wild Tulips, Anemones and Irises, and plenty of the typical Mediterranean species in all the sites we visited. Many of the locations we looked at were almost deserted and we wandered through beautiful woodlands and open glades with only birdsong and cowbells to be heard. Butterflies were spotted at most of the sites we visited, although some cool weather slowed down their activity, but there were plenty of other interesting insects to be found as well. Although we were looking down at the plants a lot of the time, we did manage to produce a very comprehensive bird list with some good coastal species seen, as well as the more usual birds of stony hillsides and dark forests. Day 1 Monday 8th April We all met up at Bari Airport, with most of the group arriving on the BA flight.

Based on natural selection, mutation and genetic drift, speciation occurs simultaneously in organisms linking them in complexes webs called ecosystems. Clarify what a species is, it is the first step to understand the biology of orchids and start protection actions especially in a fast changing world due to human impact such as habitats fragmentation and climate changes. I use the biological species concept (BSC) to investigate the presence and eventually the strength of mechanisms that limit the gene flow between close related taxa.

Orchid Odyssey Holiday Report 5 - 12 April 2014 Greenwings Wildlife Holidays Tel: 01473 436096 Web: www.greenwings.co Email: [email protected] ©Greenwings 2014 Introduction Rhodes, the capital of the Dodecanese group of islands in Greece, is situated just off the coast of east Turkey. Therefore, it is blessed with an interesting mixture of east Mediterranean and Asian flora and fauna. Although the island is a popular destination for sun and beach loving tourists, there is much natural beauty to discover, if one takes the time. Despite its relatively small size, the island has an impressive plant list, just shy of 1,500 species—soon to be documented in a new flora of Rhodes publication by a renowned botanist and author. It is perhaps one of the best Greek islands for orchids, with a large list of diverse and interesting species, particularly in the genus Ophrys. Mt. Attaviros The orchids were to be our main focus for the week long holiday and we based ourselves in central Rhodes, an ideal location for setting out on daily excursions to explore the island. Our aim was to spend a relaxing week exploring the mountains, river valleys, Pinus brutia dominated forests, phrygana, coastal and olive grove habitats, in the hope of seeing around 30-50 species of orchid and other interesting flora and fauna. The guests who joined us were Walter, Casper, Alan, Denise and Wendy. The tour was led by Yiannis Christofides, assisted by Julian Dowding and Matt Berry. Group shot ©Greenwings 2014 2 Day 1: Saturday 5th April, day of arrival in Rhodes A number of guests arrived at lunchtime so we had time to take them to our hotel in the mountains and settle in, then set out for a 2 hour excursion around Ophrys reinholdii some of the western and northern slopes of Profitis Ilias , close to the hotel.

The weather was nice, everyone felt like meeting with the Cretan landscape and nature immediately, so we did! It was the first visit for everyone on this magnificent island, so we were very enthusiastic. Stop 1. The airport of Chania is situated on Akrotiri peninsula. This is very fortunate, since only a few minutes after we got on the van we could make our first stop! Akrotiri peninsula is well known for its nature and history. We took our lunch by a nice olive grove. The place was well known for its orchids. But the messages Sotiris had for the current spring were not very optimistic. Winder was very dry and hot, and orchids were flowering very sporadically and in small numbers. Also, spring was early this year. The situation was the same for every part of Greece, Rhodes e.tc. We came across that reality very soon: Anacamptis fragrans, one of the last orchid species to be seen, were already starting to flower! Serapias bergonii was there in good numbers. And that was all, regarding orchids! But we were not discouraged at all. We were ready to take whatever nature Crete had to offer us! And Crete is always welcoming… Stop 2.

The peaceful countryside was easily accessible and we walked along quiet tracks and through cool woodlands, and in many of the sites we were the only visitors there. We had picnics out of doors every day, with plenty of the local produce on offer. The historic town of Monte Sant’Angelo, with its whirling flocks of Swifts, was well worth a visit, and we ended the week in the picturesque small fishing port of Peschici where we enjoyed spectacular coastal views, Alpine Swifts nesting in the cliffs, and meals of the local seafood. As well as the rich flora we saw many species of butterflies, typical of this region, and had a good list of Mediterranean birds, especially on our visits to the coast. Day 1 Monday 9th April Our tour began in Bari where we all gathered after the early morning flight from Gatwick. There was the usual busy period when we had to collect the two minibuses but we were eventually on the road, quickly leaving Bari behind us and heading onto the open road in the flat agricultural land which was under cultivation for as far as we could see.

Overall, more than 110,000 stations were referenced and 160 taxa were reported with their range on 154 maps. This project is original by synthesizing, at large scale, much accurate naturalistic information from local surveys, thanks to a participative approach and on the basis of scientific objectives. Some orchid populations have been recorded for more than 20 years, revealing demographic trends at the scale of the coun- try. Guidelines for application IUCN Red List criteria at regional level have been applied in order to establish The French Red List of orchid species. This represents one of the few examples of IUICN criteria being applied at a regional scale for a plant family. Based on the IUCN categorization about 1 in 5 species is threatened, one as Regionally Extinct (RE), 4 as Endangered (EN) and 23 as Vulnerable (VU).
