Since their fi rst appearance, sharks have occupied a wide range of habitats as a result of their diverse morphological or behavioural adaptations to their environment. Sharks are one of the success stories of evolution, because of their life-history characteristics as k-selected species (large maximum body size, slow growth, late maturity and long lifespan). However, due to these same life-history characteristics, many shark species are now considered vulnerable, threatened or endangered. The Mediterranean region, where sharks display their diversity with 49 species, is known as an important habitat for

  • The Phylogenetic Relationships and Species Richness of Host-Specific Dactylogyrus Parasites Shaped by the Biogeography of Balkan
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN The phylogenetic relationships and species richness of host-specifc Dactylogyrus parasites shaped Received: 23 February 2018 Accepted: 17 August 2018 by the biogeography of Balkan Published: xx xx xxxx cyprinids Michal Benovics1, Yves Desdevises2, Jasna Vukić3, Radek Šanda4 & Andrea Šimková1 Parasites exhibiting a high degree of host specifcity are expected to be intimately associated with their hosts. Therefore, the evolution of host-specifc parasites is at least partially shaped by the evolutionary history and distribution of such hosts. Gill ectoparasites of Dactylogyrus (Monogenea) are specifc to cyprinid fsh. In the present study, we investigated the evolutionary history of 47 Dactylogyrus species from the Balkan Peninsula, the Mediteranean region exhibiting the highest cyprinid diversity in Europe, and from central European cyprinids. Phylogenetic analyses revealed four well-supported clades of endemic and non-endemic Dactylogyrus spp. with four basal taxa. Endemic cyprinids with a limited distribution range were parasitized by endemic Dactylogyrus species, but some of them shared several Dactylogyrus species with central European cyprinids. Species delimitation analyses based on molecular data suggest that Dactylogyrus diversity is higher than that defned from morphology. Some endemic cyprinid species harboured Dactylogyrus species of diferent origins, this probably resulting from multiple host switching. Our results support the view that the evolution of Dactylogyrus in the Balkans has been infuenced not only by the historical dispersion and distribution of their cyprinid hosts, but also by recent contacts of non-native cyprinid species with endemic cyprinid fauna in this region. Te species richness of parasitic taxa and their distribution in host species is usually closely related to the history, dispersion and diversity of their hosts1–3.

The orchids did not fail to delight everyone with an incredible selection of species seen during the week. The other flora was equally spectacular with lovely displays of Narcissi, Wild Tulips, Anemones and Irises, and plenty of the typical Mediterranean species in all the sites we visited. Many of the locations we looked at were almost deserted and we wandered through beautiful woodlands and open glades with only birdsong and cowbells to be heard. Butterflies were spotted at most of the sites we visited, although some cool weather slowed down their activity, but there were plenty of other interesting insects to be found as well. Although we were looking down at the plants a lot of the time, we did manage to produce a very comprehensive bird list with some good coastal species seen, as well as the more usual birds of stony hillsides and dark forests. Day 1 Monday 8th April We all met up at Bari Airport, with most of the group arriving on the BA flight.

Based on natural selection, mutation and genetic drift, speciation occurs simultaneously in organisms linking them in complexes webs called ecosystems. Clarify what a species is, it is the first step to understand the biology of orchids and start protection actions especially in a fast changing world due to human impact such as habitats fragmentation and climate changes. I use the biological species concept (BSC) to investigate the presence and eventually the strength of mechanisms that limit the gene flow between close related taxa.

Perea et al. BMC Evolutionary Biology 2010, 10:265 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/10/265 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Phylogenetic relationships and biogeographical patterns in Circum-Mediterranean subfamily Leuciscinae (Teleostei, Cyprinidae) inferred from both mitochondrial and nuclear data Silvia Perea1*, Madelaine Böhme2, Primož Zupančič3, Jörg Freyhof4, Radek Šanda5, Müfit Özuluğ6, Asghar Abdoli7, Ignacio Doadrio1 Abstract Background: Leuciscinae is a subfamily belonging to the Cyprinidae fish family that is widely distributed in Circum-Mediterranean region. Many efforts have been carried out to deciphering the evolutionary history of this group. Thus, different biogeographical scenarios have tried to explain the colonization of Europe and Mediterranean area by cyprinids, such as the “north dispersal” or the “Lago Mare dispersal” models. Most recently, Pleistocene glaciations influenced the distribution of leuciscins, especially in North and Central Europe. Weighing up these biogeographical scenarios, this paper constitutes not only the first attempt at deciphering the mitochondrial and nuclear relationships of Mediterranean leuciscins but also a test of biogeographical hypotheses that could have determined the current distribution of Circum-Mediterranean leuciscins. Results: A total of 4439 characters (mitochondrial + nuclear) from 321 individuals of 176 leuciscine species rendered a well-supported phylogeny, showing fourteen main lineages. Analyses of independent mitochondrial and nuclear markers supported the same main lineages, but basal relationships were not concordant. Moreover, some incongruence was found among independent mitochondrial and nuclear phylogenies. The monophyly of some poorly known genera such as Pseudophoxinus and Petroleuciscus was rejected. Representatives of both genera belong to different evolutionary lineages. Timing of cladogenetic events among the main leuciscine lineages was gained using mitochondrial and all genes data set.

Summary We managed to fit plenty of sites and lots of plants into our week in the “Orchid Capital of Europe”, visiting a good variety of plant-rich habitats ranging from breezy coastal salt marshes and limestone sea cliffs to typical Mediterranean stony hillsides, olive groves and shady woodlands. The orchids did not fail to delight, and we found a superb selection of species during the week. The non-orchid flora was equally attractive with showy displays of Narcissi, Wild Tulips, Anemones and Irises, and plenty of the usual Mediterranean species in all the areas we visited. We were fortunate in that most of the locations we looked at were almost deserted and we were able to explore beautiful woodlands and open glades with only bird-song and cow-bells to be heard. Butterflies were spotted at most of the sites we visited, and there were plenty of other interesting insects to be found as well. Although we spent most of our time looking down at the plants, we did manage to produce a very good bird list with some exciting coastal species seen, as well as the more usual Mediterranean birds of stony hillsides and dark forests.
