The county town has been important site since early Saxon times - fought over by the Danes. In the late 18th and 19th century, Northampton grew in prosperity, the principle industry being shoe and boot manufacturing. This in turn led to a proliferation of handsome brick factories and houses for the workers. The centre of the town today reflects this history. Particularly handsome is the Cultural Quarter which leads from All Saints church, past the gothic Guild Hall, and down Derngate past thriving theatres and the Museum and Art Gallery. The latter holds the finest collection of footwear in a public collection anywhere worldwide. There is a sense of optimism evidenced in the new Waterside Campus for the University and the restoration of Delapre Abbey completed in 2017.
