TMA Summer 2014 FOURTH BISHOP OF THE MURRAY INSTALLED Bishop John Ford has been installed as the fourth Bishop of The Murray in the presence of the Anglican Primate of Australia, Philip Aspinall, the Archbishop of Adelaide, Jeffrey Driver and other visiting Bishops. The installation, by the Venerable Richard A. Seabrook, Administrator of the Diocese, took place at a Sung Evensong at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist at Murray Bridge on the th6 of December, 2013. The installation was also attended by the Governor of South Australia, Kevin Scarce, the State Member for Hammond, Adrian Pederick, the Catholic Archbishop of Adelaide, Philip Wilson and other Anglican Bishops including the Bishop of Willochra, John Stead, the Assistant Bishop of Adelaide, Tim Harris and a former Bishop of Willochra, David McCall. Around 350 people attended the Eucharist at the Murray Bridge Town Hall on Saturday th7 December, the morning after the Installation at the Cathedral. Amongst those present at the celebration were the Archbishop of Adelaide, Jeffrey Driver; the Archbishop of Sydney, Glenn Davies; the Bishops of Bendigo and Willochra, Andrew Curnow and John Stead; Bishops Stanley Goldsworthy, Stuart Smith and David McCall. At the conclusion of the sermon, the Bishop invited all to repent of their sins and renew their baptismal vows. The vessel used for blessing of the water was designed and put together by Jonathan Woore, a parishioner from Mt Barker and a member of Diocesan Council. The waters of baptism were sprinkled over those present with the Bishop ascending and descending along the two aisles of the auditorium. David Mills, a Pastoral Assistant from the Pastoral District of the Southern Vales came to the stage and asked the Bishop himself whether he would share the Diocese’s journey of faith as being a fellow Christian with them and for them. Of course, he agreed! The Mass continued with the Eucharistic Prayer, the distribution of Holy Communion and the Prayer after Communion. A presentation was then made of a set of vestments for the new Bishop- a gift from the people of the Diocese. At the conclusion of the Mass, a reception was held at the Murray Bridge and District Community Club to mark the beginning of Bishop John Ford’s ministry in the Diocese. Bishop John was supported by his wife Bridget during the installation and at the inaugural mass along with their son and daughter-in-law Benedict and Sarah who flew from the UK for the occasion. The Commission developed such a document which the Standing Committee sent to Dioceses after its October 2006 meeting for the consideration of and response by the dioceses to the Ministry Commission. Only the Diocese of Bendigo has forwarded comments to the Ministry Commission upon this document. The document is too substantial to include in this report. The review of responses to the document will be on the agenda of the Ministry Commission. The second component of the General Synod 2004 reference was the request for the development of a model review of the performance of the clergy. The Commission developed guidelines for the review of clergy in ministry using the mnemonic review. Introduction Throughout the Australian Church there is increased interest in reviewing the effectiveness, appropriateness and direction of clergy ministry. The clergy themselves, bishops and church leaders want to see in what ways the ministry being exercised makes a difference.

    CHAPTER 15 Developing Ministry at North Terrace 2000–2012 hile the health of the gatherings new and old was the central concern of the pastors led by Paul Harrington, these years saw many other efforts at developing the effectiveness of Holy Trinity’s ministry, both to its existing members and to those Wwho might join once they had heard and been convinced by the teaching on offer. This chapter examines some of those other endeavours over the decade or more since 2000. ***** Setting up and caring for the early years of the Hills congregation while maintaining a clear view of opportunities on North Terrace saw Harrington and his team maintain a fairly steady course through 2000–2001. The procedure of promoting the subsequent year’s budget by publishing a ‘Vision for Ministry’ in the spring was now well established. It permitted Harrington to promote his intentions and get responses to the draft budget from the congregation. The wardens then adjusted their plans accordingly. It made the subsequent annual vestry meetings less fraught, and meant the costs incurred before the Vestry meeting were more predictable. One immediate change saw Andrew Cole joined the team to replace Jeff Parkin, now titled site manager Cole would work with a revivified site management team that lifted the security and general health of the North Terrace buildings. A major pastoral initiative was launched by Lyn Sarah, drawing on her social work experience as well as her developing theological studies. She introduced what she called the ‘PEACE Pastoral Care’ model. Her goal was to develop a growing number of members of the congregation who were trained in a more intentional approach to pastoral care, while not ever pretending to be professional counselors.

For those on the outside, the Church building bears witness to the fact that the people who meet there take God seriously.

The Rev’d Adrian Stephens No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Preacher – John 15:12-13 The Right Rev’d Denise Ferguson Today is ANZAC day and it is quite rightly a day to give thanks for the many people who have placed their own lives in danger to protect the freedom of others. It is a day to remember the Defence Personnel who have died in battle; the people who have been injured or bereaved as a result of war; the people who continue to live with the trauma of war and who may never know peace in their heart. We pray today for the veterans who consider suicide as an option for peace, and we give thanks for the Royal Commission into Veteran Suicide. It is important that we recognise the great sacrifice that many people have made in order that we may live in peace. We also recognise that our Lord died upon that horrid cross so that we could inherit eternal life. As we pray today, let us give thanks to God for our salvation, and let us give thanks for the sacrifice offered by the members of our Defence Personnel.     Anglican Diocese of Grafton Prayer Diary 2020 A LETTER FROM THE BISHOP Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, In 1 Kings 18:41-46 we read about Elijah’s prayer on Mount Carmel. He “climbed to the top of Mount Carmel and bowed himself down upon the earth and prayed with his face between his knees”. For those of us who don’t do Yoga or Pilates, Elijah’s prayer posture does not sound very comfortable or even achievable. It does however speak of the intensity and authenticity of his prayer. One Christian writer on prayer says that from this passage we know that Elijah was not putting on a front or trying to hide his feelings. He was praying authentically. The Scriptures underline the importance of a personal prayer life that is authentic and genuine (e.g. Matthew 6:5-6). We get to know a person by spending time with them and understanding their concerns, desires and perspective. The same can be said for our relationship with God. Prayer is fundamentally relational, as we spend time with God, cultivating our relationship with him and genuinely listening for his will in all that we bring before him. C.S. Lewis spoke of this relational nature of prayer, of the need to pray in all circumstances: “I pray because I can’t help myself” he wrote, “I pray because the need flows out of me all the time, waking and sleeping”. The ministries that are listed in this Prayer Diary are many and varied. As we bring them before God day by day in our personal and corporate prayers, let us genuinely seek his will in all that is done in his name.
