acknowledge this in our designs. We have also seen an increase in the number of studio based student accommodation schemes in many cities and city centres. Private developers have understood the need for additional communal space such as lounges, cinema rooms, gyms and quiet or collaborative study rooms but also outdoor amenity space to ensure the scheme remains attractive to students even if it means reducing the number of rooms. Universities are aware of these changing requirements too. The University of Bath, for example, is one our most progressive clients. Project Gallery PROJECT GALLERY

Architect’s Choice presents the Project Gallery, a collection of buildings, some big, some small, that have been created, transformed, renovated and restored by some of the world’s biggest architectural firms. This edition is another fine mix of architectural talents including a museum, a former department store-turned architectural studio and some serious landscape architecture for a Canadian expo. Squire & Partners were in need of news studio spaces and looked now further than a former department store site in Brixton to house and accommodate the team. The Edwardian building recognises and respects its humble beginnings and brings material to the forefront in all areas of the new studio, including the model shop, offices and meeting rooms. It is very cool indeed. Michaelis Boyd have excelled in the hospitality stakes with a stunning hotel in Amsterdam, Kimpton De Witt. Here, traditional Amsterdam meets a clean, contemporary new aesthetic. The Members’ room at the V&A oozes style and sophistication befitting of this glorious museum. Carmody Groakes went for a full-scale design solution, pairing crisp white walls with darky moody wood. The original gallery has been adapted and a natural continuation of the museum fabric is seen here and reflected back in mirrored surfaces above the head. Finally, Grant Associates has taken landscape design to , literally, with Supertree Grove, vertical gardens in tree-like structures, embedded with all manner of sustainable energy and tech, designed for EDIT in Toronto, Canada.

Department Store

NOT PLAYING SHOPS London based architects Squire & Partners purchased a dilapidated Edwardian department store in Brixton, and entirely reimagined the space allowing the existing fabric and layers of history to inform the new design of its very own office space. Stripping the building back to its raw state revealed a decayed grandeur and an extraordinary commitment to craft and detail by the original artisans of the day. The practice sought to reveal and highlight these elements, in their found state, as well as exposing remnants left by more recent inhabitants, whilst adding a series of sensitive contemporary interventions in order to repurpose the building as an inspiring modern workspace. On the exterior, designs focused on reversing years of neglect to reactivate the street level through animation and display. Incrementally added shopfronts and layers of paint were removed to reveal original brickwork, stone, marble and terracotta. A new rooftop level was added comprising a series of oak framed pavilions with copper shingle roofs, and a crafted glass dome to replace a dilapidated existing cupola. At ground level a striking reception area and active modelshop animate the street, while a triple height void and central landscaped courtyard provide breathing space. The existing fabric of the interior was assessed in the early stages of the project, ensuring that elements such as original 111 year old mahogany and teak parquet, a grand tiled central staircase, a series of cast iron radiators and a remarkable patina of colours which document the building’s history could be preserved. A series of voids were cut through the building to create dramatic volumes, and provide vistas between levels. The office floors offered the opportunity to reveal the many facets of design undertaken by the practice and expose the process of craft and making. Project areas are designed to act as evolving ‘concessions’ - showcases to the process of design and development. Models, prototypes and explorations document and celebrate a projects journey from concept to realisation. Multiple areas for presentation can be found throughout the office with display cases, shelving, libraries for materials and books, models and explorative studies. www.squireandpartners.com Photography by James Jones

TRUE BLUE The Kimpton De Witt in Amsterdam is Kimpton Hotels’ first destination outside the Americas. Located in the heart of Amsterdam’s vibrant centre and within walking distance from Centraal Station, Michaelis Boyd have designed the newly refurbished hotel, which boasts 274 guest rooms, including 15 signature rooms. The project was completed in May this year. Working with Ave Bradley, global senior VP and design and creative director of Kimpton Hotels, Michaelis Boyd designed a crisp architecturally-driven interior featuring contemporary timber wall panelling, pale oak timber floors, steel glazed screens and bespoke terrazzo walls. The hotel design was inspired by the playful design approach of Kimpton, with a contemporary architectural approach and a nod to traditional Amsterdam. The ground floor has been reconfigured to provide a new entrance with a visual connection to the street and an improved guest journey through a series of lobby and lounge spaces. A former lounge at the heart of the hotel has been reimagined as a new garden room, bringing in daylight and fresh air to the centre of the building and acting as the terrace to the adjacent House Bar. The concept of flora and botanica runs throughout the hotel and the new entrance has been designed to provide a welcoming landscaped retreat from the busy street. www.michaelisboyd.com | Photography by Laure Joliet

Supertree Grove

SUPERTREES AT GLOBAL EXPO Grant Associates’ designed for the Supertree Grove of Singapore’s internationally acclaimed Gardens by the Bay featured at the Expo for Design, Innovation & Technology (EDIT) in Toronto, Canada in October. The Supertrees appeared in ‘The Green and the Gray’, an interactive exhibition curated by international design studio Carlo Ratti Associati. Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay is an award-winning showpiece of horticulture and garden artistry. At the core of the site there is Bay South, a waterfront garden masterplanned by Grant Associates, featuring the iconic Supertrees, vertical gardens with a tree-like structure between 25 and 50 metres, embedded with sustainable energy and water technologies and displaying tropical flowering climbers, epiphytes and ferns. At night, these canopies come alive with lighting and projected media. Part of the wider EDIT Expo, the exhibition investigated the evolving relationship between nature and cities. The aim of “The Green and The Gray” is to showcase progressive projects in fields such as urban development, housing and product design. From hydroponics to sensors for climate engineering, to vertical gardens and sensitive lighting systems, the exhibition will explore how new technologies can bridge the rift between city and nature, or urban and rural, in unprecedented ways. Andrew Grant, founder and Director at Grant Associates, commented: “EDIT is an ambitious exhibition that deals with some of the most pressing challenges facing our world, including global urbanisation… EDIT and ‘The Green and the Gray’ provide vehicles through which the international design community can explore how to respond to these urgent issues, and help create a sustainable future. It’s a privilege for Grant Associates to be involved with the event and take part in these important discussions.” EDIT took place within a former Unilever Soap factory in Toronto’s Port. www.grant-associates.uk.com

MEMBERS ONLY Architectural practice Carmody Groarke has unveiled the design of the new Members’ Room at the Victoria & Albert Museum. The studio has converted a top-floor, top-lit gallery space in Aston Webb’s Grade 1 Listed 1909 wing of the Museum to enable the V&A to host Members for hospitality events and refreshments. Architecturally, the creative adaptation of the original gallery has been envisaged as part of the natural continuum of the museum fabric. As such, Carmody Groarke’s designs have subtly restored and retained existing spatial or detail character and where appropriate reinvented architectural features including lighting and furniture. The atmosphere of the majestic gallery has been preserved as an open-plan, daylight-filled room. New architectural interventions have been added to accentuate the qualities of the original building, as well as provide visitor comfort with bespoke-designed furniture, which creates smaller rooms within the overall space. The studio’s design has elevated the original floor level of the gallery almost half-a-metre to enable visitors to take in views from the existing windows to The Sackler Courtyard overlooking The Sainsbury Gallery, part of the newly unveiled V&A Exhibition Road Quarter, which also comprises The Blavatnik Hall. Large mirror installations amplify the energy and activity within the room, creating new perspectives from inside-to-outside, and to other levels within the Museum via a light well, which connects the existing galleries. Through a rich accumulation of details and design references, of tradition and invention, the intention has been to create a subtle but atmospheric backdrop to the Members’ Room, one where visitors feel welcome, comfortable and inspired. www.carmodygroarke.com | Photography by Rory Gardner

tp24, LED lighting specialists enjoyed a successful trip to the 100% Design show this year. The focus of the stand was the revolutionary Abstract Linear LED lighting range, which attracted lots of interest from architects and designers keen to be offered something unique and innovative. Designed in the UK by tp24, Abstract offers many pioneering features including the ability to literally change the light fitting design by simply swapping, removing, or changing orientation of the arms. Furthermore, the integrated circuit dimming mechanism enables easy control of the light levels, helping to complement the ambience. Abstract delivers light beyond illumination, allowing the consumer to light their world differently, where light is turned into art. Shaun Davis, Managing Director of tp24 Ltd commented “We had a fabulous 100% Design, resulting in many exciting enquiries for our Abstract range. TAILOR-MADE PANELS

Vicaima presented no less than two large stands showcasing genuine inspiration with an array of new design trends and performance solutions at 100% Design this year. With a reputation for design excellence that spans almost 60 years, Vicaima has always prided itself on forward thinking and a passion for innovation. This was very much in evidence at this year’s design show where Vicaima was able to launch a whole host of new products, including its exciting and thought-provoking MATCH decorative panels. MATCH was very noticeable throughout both stands, where it could be seen as wall panels, doors, furniture, ornamental pillars and even works of art. MATCH is a revolutionary decorative panel that uses innovative technology and advanced production processes to create tailor-made graphic solutions directly onto veneered and other base layers. With the ability to re-create natural materials such as stone, textile, metal or unique surfaces. In this way designers can untether their creative flair and remove the boundaries to realising unique concepts. Of course no Vicaima exhibition would be complete without world-class interior doors and door sets and again here Vicaima did not disappoint. With high gloss veneers, unique stained designs and special lacquered faces, all presented, many for the first time ever, with both an aesthetic and performance characteristics in mind, Vicaima had something for residential and commercial applications alike. Examples included the invisible sliding door mechanism, the new Exclusive EX70 door with its chevron pattern and displayed as a flush-to-surround inverse set, or the hotel inspired acoustic and fire performance entrance system incorporating RFID door locks. 01793 532333 | www.vicaima.com | www.vicaimamatch.com

IMPROVING ENERGY USE FOR SCHOOL

Wilo’s high efficiency circulating pumps have been integrated into Auckley Primary School in Doncaster, after the school decided to extend its classroom area. After initially considering the use of a ground source heat pump to provide the heating for the extension, it became apparent that there would be even greater benefit for the school if the ground source heat pump replaced the existing gas fired heating system and provided heating, cooling and hot water for the whole building. Wilo Stratos low energy pumps were used for the heating circulators so as to maximise efficiency and performance. With heating and hot water demand expected to be in the region of 190,000kWh/y and the heat pump expected to use under 62,000kWh/y, there is an estimated annual energy saving of around 118,000kWh. When compared to the previous natural gas fired system running at 70 per cent efficiency, this equates to a CO2 reduction of around 17.7 tonnes a year. 01283 523 000 | www.wilo.co.uk

A BETTER WATER QUALITY

Garside Sands has supplied more than 2,400 tonnes of its pioneering Slowfil Sand to Thames Water, as part of an ongoing programme to improve its water quality for customers across London and the Thames Valley. Garside Sands, part of leading construction materials supplier Aggregate Industries, supplied the sand following a successful trial last year in conjunction with Western Carbons, anthracite filter media specialist. The product meets the acute industry standard for size, grading and colour required for the production of safe drinking water. The process of slow sand filtering takes place in a sand-filled container, in which the sand is initially submerged in water. This water allows the top layer of wet sand to gradually develop a biological ‘film’ made up of living organisms such as algae and bacteria. Once this has occurred the water filtration process can begin. The surface biofilm (top layer) is the layer that provides the most effective purification as the living organisms essentially ‘eat’ or attach to pathogens in the water, effectively stopping them from flowing down through the sand. As water travels down, due to the natural pull of gravity, the underlying sand continues to provide a level of biological treatment, which lessens as the water reaches the bottom most layer of sand. www.aggregate.com

REMMERS AIDS REGENERATION

The Grade II Listed building located in Manchester City Centre is being refurbished by Quadriga Contracts Ltd as part of the NOMA regeneration scheme to provide Grade A office space, retail and leisure facilities. Constructed in 1905, the interior walls have accumulated a thick build-up of dust, dirt, polish and even nicotine residue, all of which needed to be removed. Following trials of various products, Remmers Arte Mundit Eco was selected as it is a self-vulcanising cleaning paste designed for thorough, water-free removal of residues and soiling on a wide range of substrates. The Arte Mundit Eco was applied using a 4” brush and left to ‘set’ overnight. The set rubber-like material was then removed by hand the following day revealing the original white marble finish. www.remmers.co.uk

UPGRADED RESIDENCE

Bowater Projects’ unparalleled technical advice and knowledge has been critical to the success of Linc’s commitment to upgrade its residential scheme Llys Yr Efail in Blaenau Gwent. Llys Yr Efail is a housing scheme for older people and contains 35 self-contained one and two bedroom flats over three floors, as well as a lower ground floor comprising communal facilities with a lift to all floors. Over 200 casement windows, from The VEKA UK Group, in the Halo System10 profile were specified for this project, as well as nine doors, all of which deliver a number of benefits to the end users. As an example, the low-level gasket design of the windows avoids the unsightly black border appearance, on similar products, and makes the maximum area of glass visible. This allows as much daylight as possible to flood the interior of a room, which can improve the health and well-being of those living within the building. Bowater Projects offers a pilot installation on all schemes, as part of its service. www.bowaterprojects.com

DECORATIVE COVERING AT BUPA HQ

Mapei UK have supplied 500m2 of their complete Ultratop Loft system in Silver Grey Ultratop Loft F & W finishes, and applied these at the BUPA head offices at The Spectrum Building, Cabots Circus, Bristol. The highly decorative cementitious covering was installed over existing concrete columns during refurbishment works, with installation of the complete Ultratop system, taking place over one week during March 2017. Ultratop Loft is the ideal coating product to create decorative interior floors and walls with a pronounced textured effect. The consistency of the product means that it can be used on both walls and floors and with the scope for installing in a wide range of colours, a variety of unique, attractive and original finishes can be achieved. Mapei’s technical team provided training to installers TPS 360 to use the Ultratop Loft product. The complete system was installed as part of a renovation project for the BUPA offices; the Ultratop Loft was installed over Mapei’s Eco Prim Grip and Primer G primers on the vertical surfaces to provide an unsealed finish. 0121 508 6970 | [email protected] | www.mapei.co.uk

EXTENDED TIES FOR HIGH-RISE

Now available in lengths of 325mm and 350mm, the Ancon ST1 wall tie range has been extended to suit high-rise masonry buildings with insulated cavities up to 225mm wide. These new longer lengths of ST1 feature a maximum design cavity embedment guide at each end to aid installation. The Type 1 (heavy duty) performance of these ties is independently verified by tension and compression tests in M2 mortar at Lucideon and declared through Ancon’s ‘CE’ labelling and documentation. Type 1 wall ties are suitable for virtually any building type, height and geographical location and are installed at a standard spacing of 2.5 ties per square metre; they are typically used on developments over 15 metres in height. Available in boxes of 250 ties, the Ancon ST1 is value-engineered from stainless steel strip. The unique ST1 design, with its relatively small cross-sectional area, provides high strength and lower thermal transfer. 0114 275 5224 | [email protected] | www.ancon.co.uk

PROTECTING TILE STYLE

A FILA tile protection and care regime has been specified, alongside In Situ London’s Moroccan cement tiles, at Jamie’s Italian. The stunning installation spans the restaurant and bar area, on floors and on walls below open serving counters. FILA protection and finishing treatments were chosen to protect and enhance the encaustic-style Moroccan tiles throughout the fixing process. One of the latest additions to Jamie’s chain, the new restaurant is situated within the Hilton Hotel at Tower Bridge. Designed by Stiff + Trevillion, the stunning interior broadly follows Jamie’s established style but with a more contemporary feel. Throughout the restaurant, the tiles’ distinct oblique pattern mirrors the suspended ceiling and lighting design and the restaurant’s rustic, earthy tones. During the installation, In Situ initially applied FILAPRW200 pre-grouting protector to the cement tiles. The water-based treatment, from FILA’s Green Line, is specially designed for absorbent materials and protects against grout, water and building site residues, without altering appearance or affecting adhesion. FILAPS87 was then used to deep clean the tiles, before protecting the tiles and grout lines against stains with solvent-free FILAMP90 ECO PLUS. 01584 877286 | [email protected] | filasolutions.com

LOAD-BEARING SOLUTIONS

Palmerston School, Liverpool, recently identified a need for a new school building as staff and pupils were hampered by the lack of outdoor space and modern learning facilities. A former secondary school site was selected on which to construct its new £7m facility. The new T-shaped single storey building includes a sports and dining hall plus a new hydrotherapy and splash pool together with sensory learning spaces. There is also a five-a- side football pitch and four-lane grass running track around the pitch perimetre. Originally planned as a timber frame construction, the main contractor asked voestalpine Metsec plc to review the school design and see whether a load bearing steel frame solution (SFS) could be offered. Taking a consultative approach, Metsec was able to advise the main contractors on the layout, and worked in conjunction with installers, local company Mark One. As the first tier 2 designer and manufacturer certified to BIM Level 2 for Design and Construction in the UK by the BSI, Metsec used its BIM capabilities within the design stages to provide detailed plans and costings. Metsec was required on-site from the start of the project, completing the steel framing in the summer of 2016. Designing the SFS solution for Palmerston School using Revit, Metsec attended regular main contractor team meetings with the BIM model, allowing any issues to be resolved in advance of the build. By using BIM, the project benefitted from a reduced timing programme and no waste, both providing subsequent cost savings. Metsec’s engagement in the project from the early stages meant it could provide bespoke, flexible solutions integral to enabling the complex design aspects desired by the client. 0121 601 6000 | www.metsec.com

NATURAL AIRFLOW FOR DIPPY

When the Natural History Museum installed its new, real-life skeleton of a blue whale, Gilberts provided a ventilation solution for the Grade 1 listed Hintze Hall. Based on CFD modelling, Gilberts manufactured and supplied 24no of a bespoke version of its Mistrale Model A natural ventilation units, with a further 42no standard WHF50 high performance louvres. Each of the bespoke units used a combination of Gilberts’ WHF50 cassette with its VN75 ultra low leakage air volume control damper, to fit within existing window apertures and frames, and bolt together into specially- designed subframes. Gilberts also devised a bespoke combination of internal K40 fixed bar grilles and non vision cores mounted on the rear of the units. In a separate high level atrium, the original glass in the window frames could be removed; there, the glazing was replaced with Gilberts’ WHF50 louvres to provide high level exhaust of the ’used’ internal air. 01253 766911 | [email protected]

LINEAR DRAINAGE SOLUTIONS

Charcon, the commercial hard landscaping division of Aggregate Industries, has reported continued sales growth for its linear drainage product: Safeticurb. Having relaunched the product in January 2016, the innovative technology vastly reduces the need for conventional underground piping, and offers a discrete solution for removing surface water. The product continues to be specified on a variety of hard landscaping projects, with supermarket chain, Sainsbury’s, the latest name on the list. The product was installed in the Staines superstore in spring 2017, providing an effective and well-priced solution to eliminate standing surface water around the complex. Safeticurb is designed to fit most hard landscaping projects, including car parks, industrial sites and pedestrianised developments. The product is tested to BS EN 1433 standards and can withstand up to 400kN, Class D, in its heaviest specification. To create a perfect balance between cost and effectiveness, the product runs parallel drainage sections at 30-35m intervals across the total drainage area. The system also requires very little maintenance, reducing overheads through smart design. 01335 372 222 | www.charcon.com

DESIGNER DRAINAGE

Schlüter-Systems has introduced three new grate designs, available across both its point and linear drains. Schlüter recognises that drains are an increasingly important element in creating a cohesive whole for a wetroom. The new designs for Schlüter®-KERDI-DRAIN and Schlüter®-KERDI-LINE, Floral, Curve and Pure, have been developed with current bathroom trends in mind, but will stand the test of time. Floral is a geometric design with just the right amount of softness, suitable for wetrooms with a structured industrial or softly textured theme; The simple, playful accents of the Curve design translate into grates that are the perfect complement to all manner of trends, from the organic feel of a natural retreat to the clean-cut lines of a reduced geometric wetroom and Pure is crisp and minimalist; a no-fuss, no-frills design. The new grate designs are available in Schlüter’s ever-popular brushed stainless steel finish. In addition, all of the new grate designs come equipped with a contour frame, making for easy cleaning and a sharp, sleek aesthetic. Schlüter is committed to continually expanding the range of options available to specifiers and tilers, allowing for increased creativity and the highest quality finishes. 01530 813396 | [email protected] | www.schluter.co.uk

PLASTIC, THE PIED PIPER

According to Gareth Samuel, BPF Pipes Group, plastics are now the dominant material in hot and cold water supply systems inside buildings. Data from Pipes and Fittings Market Report (UK 2016-2020 Analysis) shows that use of plastic piping systems for water supply in new build is now up to 60 per cent. Plastic plumbing system manufacturers provide fittings that form reliable joints from plastic pipes to copper and other metallic pipes, which is a boon when refurbishing older properties. Over a property’s lifetime, the plumbing system can transition to plastic piping with the many in-service benefits of low thermal conductivity, low noise transmission, smooth bore, thermal expansion and inherent corrosion resistance. The BPF Pipes Group guidance on the use of plastics for discharge pipework from unvented hot water systems, sets out the range of materials which can safely be used for discharge pipes and soil stacks taking discharges. Underfloor heating systems provide an attractive alternative to radiators; the massive performance improvements offered by warm water underfloor heating systems over electric systems and the dust-generating hot air systems means that this is a real option not only for commercial properties and luxury homes but also for housing developments and self-builders. All this has been made possible by the availability of well-designed and quality assured plastic pipes. www.bpfpipesgroup.com

ENCHANTING GREEN

Irish Green marble by Antolini was recently used for two related rooms created by designer Alessandro La Spada. In the bedroom, a continuous backlit panel in Irish Green wraps the large double bed like a soft fabric. Emphasising the bright tones of green, emeralds and yellow, the panel serves as a nightstand and headboard, then rises into a large iridescent area, and finally reaches the ceiling, creating great intimacy to the space. Thanks to the natural treatment and a lack of direct light, the Irish Green walls soften the bold personality of the bedroom, introducing a contemporary hidden space reserved for the wardrobe area. Irish Green is a marble that glorifies in shades of green, displaying uneven colouring and shading that passes from dark to light. Part of the Antolini range, it displays some whitish veins and others in a translucent apple colour that makes this a unique stone in the world. This geologically ancient stone was used by Renaissance architects to bring the colours of the fields and the forests to the splendid palaces they adorned with magnificent works that are still admired today by tourists from around the world. Thanks to its varied veining, Irish Green allows unusual patterns to be created and makes any work absolutely unique and unrepeatable. www.antolini.com
