achelle Koester’s twin sons were in fifth grade when she decided to start with a R single flowerbed. “I volunteered on the Monteith PTO, but as Mark and Nick got older, they needed me less,” says Koester, whose husband, Pete, is a lifelong Grosse Pointer. “I like to be busy and wanted to fill my time.” That was 12 years ago. Every year since, the Grosse Pointe Woods garden has expanded into the fairy-tale world Koester has created today. “I knew I wanted mystery,” she says of her garden design. “That’s why I built the wall with the fountain (pictured on page 22). I didn’t want to be able to see the entire yard at once.” She used a garden hose to make flowerbeds and interesting path shapes. From there, she started introducing plants that would attract wildlife. “I want my yard to be a safe haven,” she says,

The 2019 Fascinator, the winery’s second Dry Muscat Ottonel vintage, won a Gold Medal, as did the 2018 Dry Riesling. Pipe Dream, a sparkling wine, claimed a Silver Medal. “We are excited by these results. I believe every wine we’ve submitted to competition has won an award, which is quite an achievement,” says Matthew Goodell, co-owner of the winery.
