National Coaches Conference 2011: Empowering 1 – 3 July 2011 thinking coaches Keynote Speaker Lindsay Gaze Lindsay Gaze played for Australia in three Olympics between 1960 and 1968 and coached the Australian basketball team at four Olympics between 1972 and 1984. He coached the Melbourne Tigers for 35 years, including 22 years in the National Basketball League (NBL), winning two championships in 1993 and 1997. He was the coach of the year in 1989, 1997 and 1999 and is second in the all-time number of coaching wins in that league. Lindsay Gaze is a member of the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and coach and an associate member of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. Gaze was selected for the Australian basketball team for the Rome Olympics which was the first Australian basketball team to travel overseas for the Olympics. He soon established himself as one of Australia's leading basketballers establishing an international Record and accolades reputation when he was selected as a member of the All-Star Five in Player in 1960, 1964 and the 1962 World Championships. Gaze would represent Australia at 1968 Olympics; the Rome Olympics, Tokyo Olympics and Mexico City Olympics. He developed a reputation as a fanatical trainer training two or three Coach of Australian team at times a week with his club and at home. Gaze also coached national 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984 under 16 and under 18 squads during his playing career. Andrew Gaze was part of the team that he coached 1993 and 1997; in 1984. Lindsay Gaze would write his first book Better Basketball in Three times NBL Coach of 1977. the Year 1989, 1997, 1999; Lindsay Gaze was the inaugural coach of the Melbourne Tigers at Member Australian Basketball the start of the NBL in 1984. He retired in May 2005 after 22 Hall of Fame as player and coach; seasons and 689 games with 363 victories. The Melbourne Tigers won two championships in 1993 and 1997 with Gaze as coach. He announced his retirement from (SAHOF) for role as coach basketball on the same day that Andrew Gaze announced his and member of SAHOF board; retirement after 612 NBL games. Lindsay Gaze had coached Andrew Gaze during his son's entire career as an NBL player with the pair forming the longest standing father-son partnership in the history of world sport. The pair would also author a book Winning Basketball in 1992. Lindsay Gaze was also a member of the NBL Board. In 2004, he became a part owner of the Melbourne Tigers with Andrew Gaze. On his retirement, journalist Stephen Howell of the Melbourne Age wrote that history would judge him as the most influential figure in Australian basketball. National Coaches Conference 2011: Empowering thinking coaches 1 – 3 July 2011 Andrej Lemanis Andrej has been at the helm of the Burger King NZ Breakers over the past 6 years and this past season lead the team to the NBL Championship. He has grown a reputation as one of Australasia’s top coaches and at the end of the 2008/09 season Lemanis was honoured by being named as one of the Assistant Coaches to Australian National Mens team, the Boomers. Before becoming the Head Coach of the NZ Breakers, Andrej was the assistant coach of the Townsville Crocodiles for 7 years. He was also the Assistant coach of the Australian under 21 team. Andrej played in the Australian National Basketball League playing with the St Kilda Saints, the South Melbourne Saints and won the Championship in 1992 with the South East Melbourne Magic. Dean Vickerman Dean is the Assistant coach with the Championship winning NZ Breakers, prior to which he served as an Assistant with the North Melbourne Giants, Melbourne Tigers and the Singapore Slingers. Dean has also been involved in two prior NBL grand finals both with the Melbourne Tigers - Runner up in the 1992 final as a player and as an Assistant coach of the 2005/06 NBL Championship team. Dean also coaches in the NZ NBL as Head Coach at Waikato and showed his qualities by leading the Pistons to the title in his first year at the helm. He was Assistant coach for the New Zealand Tall Blacks and this year has been appointed the Head coach New Zealand University mens team. Nenad Vucinic Vucinic, who guided the Tall Blacks to 12th at the world championship in Turkey last year, has most recently coached in the Italian second division with Forli. He has been heavily involved in New Zealand basketball throughout this century playing in the Tall Blacks in the early 2000 to assisting Tab Baldwin through the World Championships in 2002, before taking over the Head role. Vucinic has held and developed further the culture of Tall Black basketball and this year prepares again to take on the Boomers with lead up tournaments in China and Europe. Judd Flavell Judd is the Assistant Coach with the Championship winning NZ Breakers and Head Coach of the Basketball Development Academy. Flavell continues to work brilliantly with the young talent in the game, teaching them not only how to cope on the court but also in areas of leadership and responsibility off the court. The Academy program has grown over the past 5 years and has been a key part of the Breakers development model, helping bridge the gap between youth and professional basketball. National Coaches Conference 2011: Empowering thinking coaches 1 – 3 July 2011 Andy Barnett Andy has recently arrived from North America to join the NZAS Strength & Conditioning Team. He brings a wealth of high performance experience and knowledge to NZ. With over 20 years of experience with professional athletes his work includes time at the International Performance Institute and Athletes Performance developing Strength & Power programs, position specific speed and agility programs for athletes in the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, and NBA ‘five man’ clinics. During this time he also coached alongside Michael Johnson conducting NFL Combine Preparation Camps. He was a Strength and Conditioning Coach with the New York Giants of the NFL, and for Canada’s Olympic Sports for 3 Olympic Games and has worked with over 20 Gold Medalists. Andy started his Strength and Conditioning career at his Alma Mater, the University of Wyoming. Andy is a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA), a certified Olympic Weightlifting Coach and a Performance Enhancement Specialist (U.S. National Academy of Sports Medicine). Dillon Boucher Dillon Boucher is one of New Zealand top basketball minds, and has had, and continues to have a massive impact on the game as a player and coach. Representing the Tall Blacks through the 2000s Boucher made the move to Assistant coach of the Tall Blacks alongside Nenad Vucinic on retirement from International basketball. Dillon is still playing in the ANBL for the NZ Breakers and in the local NZ NBL for the Auckland Pirates. Dave Mackay - Conference Facilatator Dave Mackay is the head of Development at the New Zealand Breakers, a role that supports both the growth of player and coach development. Mackay has specialised in Long Term Athlete Development through studies at the University of Queensland and has a vast level of coaching experience at multiple levels. A former teacher, Mackay has been involved in education for the past 11 years. .
