SEC women’s soccer will begin its 26th season in 2018 deeply rooted in the national scene of collegiate soccer. Since the SEC initiated women’s soccer as a varsity sport in 1993, the sport’s popularity has grown through the country and especially in the Southeast. The 2017 season reaffirmed the SEC’s prominence in the women’s soccer. The SEC had a league-record nine teams selected to participate in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. It marked the 10th time in the last 11 seasons that the SEC has had at least six teams advance to postseason play. Three teams earned national seeds and five teams earned the right to host their opening round match on their home pitch. CHUCK DUNLAP TAMMY WILSON Two teams - Florida and South Carolina - advanced to the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. It was Director Director [email protected] [email protected] the third time in four years the SEC has had multiple teams in the NCAA Quarters. South Carolina advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. It Football Women’s Basketball Equestrian Tennis is the second time in four years (Texas A&M 2014) that the SEC has placed a team in the College Cup. Golf SEC teams finished 10-6-2 against other conferences in the NCAA Tournament this year and is 38-20- 11 (.630) over the last four seasons. South Carolina’s 9-0-1 league record earned the Gamecocks the 2017 SEC Championship. It was the second consecutive and third overall SEC title for South Carolina. Texas A&M won its third SEC Tournament championship in the last five years with a 2-1 overtime win over Arkansas in Orange Beach, Ala. A&M midfielder Mikaela Harvey was named SEC Tournament MVP. South Carolina’s Savannah McCaskill and Grace Fisk were named SEC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively. USC’s Shelley Smith was named SEC Coach of the Year. Florida’s Deanne Rose was Freshman of the Year while Mississippi State’s Mallory Eubanks earned Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.
