Miracle on 34th Street Small Group Study Guide Sunday, 11/29/ 2020 OPENING PRAYER Lord Jesus, we set aside the voices in the world and in our heads that call You impossible and we ask You to be our Lord and the guide of our lives. Thank You for keeping the promises You have made to us, especially those that seem so impossible. Shine Your light on the darker recesses of our lives and help us to bring joy to those around us, especially during this Advent season. Amen. SCRIPTURE PASSAGE Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Matthew 25:35-36 “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” INTRODUCTION The movie Miracle on 34th Street is a story about faith and doubt. Doris Walker represents someone who is rational and wants scientific proof to believe in something. She tells her daughter, Susan, that there is no such thing as Santa Claus and that he is a myth. She begins 6645 McCauley Trail West, Edina, MN 55439 ∙ 952-941-1094 ∙ www.crossview.net dating a man named Fred Gailey. Fred believes there is more to truth than what we can comprehend with our brains. These two are going to fall in love but they are also going to be at odds with one another. If you look at the Christmas story using only logic it may seem ridiculous. How can a virgin get pregnant? Why would God come to earth as a human? If all you have is the logical sense of this then all you have is an occasion for massive spending. But if you actually come to know that there is a deeper truth, it changes everything. When you understand that there is more to this universe than what you can see, feel, and touch, you begin to see the power of Christmas. QUESTIONS Does all the hoopla and commercialism immediately after Thanksgiving bother you, or do you enjoy the Christmas preparations despite the commercialism? What do you like and dislike about this? In Miracle on 34th Street, Kris Kringle said, “If you can't accept anything on faith, then you're doomed for a life dominated by doubt.” What do you think this means? How can we “see” beyond our five senses to God’s unseen realities? Fred Gailey, in Miracle on 34th Street, told the sternly “realistic” Doris, “Those lovely intangibles…are the only things that are worthwhile.” Those “lovely intangibles” are things like hope, beauty, purpose, delight, compassion or love. To what extent do you agree with Fred’s sweeping statement that they are “the only things that are worthwhile”? We are called to be like Kris Kringle today: someone who represents the Christ Child and proclaims hope. What are some ways this Christmas season we can be Christ’s presence for other people? FINAL APPLICATION This week, honor the beginning of the Advent season by committing to some form of community service in Christ’s name. 6645 McCauley Trail West, Edina, MN 55439 ∙ 952-941-1094 ∙ www.crossview.net How the Grinch Stole Christmas Small Group Study Guide Sunday, 12/6/2020 OPENING PRAYER Lord Jesus, we thank You for engraving Your instructions on our hearts and look forward to ways You will continue to mold us. Enable us to live more and more in Your goodness and grace. Grow Your generous spirit within us and in us an ever bigger heart, filled with gratitude for Your many blessings. Amen. SCRIPTURE PASSAGE Ephesians 4:26-27, 29-32 Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil … … Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Luke 1:78-79 By the tender mercy of our God,dawn from on high will break upon, give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of. INTRODUCTION 6645 McCauley Trail West, Edina, MN 55439 ∙ 952-941-1094 ∙ www.crossview.net How the Grinch Stole Christmas sets up a contrast between the Grinch and the Whos. The Grinch was bitter, resentful and angry. He held onto his hurts from the past and he believed that the only way to be happy was to make others miserable. The Whos show kindness, mercy and forgiveness on a regular basis. They even invite the Grinch to Christmas dinner after he stole all of their presents and Christmas decorations. Every believer has two natures (our sinful nature and our new nature in Jesus). You could say it’s like we have a Grinch nature and a Who nature in our hearts. The question for the Grinch (and for us) is “which nature will you feed and which one will you starve?” QUESTIONS Do you love all the Christmas music on the radio this time of the year or does it bother you? The Grinch resented the Whos because they were happy. So he devised a plan to make them miserable. He believed that if he made them miserable he would be happy. Nelson Mandela said, “Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies.” What do you think about that statement? In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus links the Golden Rule (“Do to others as you would have them do to you”—Luke 6:27-31) to how to treat our enemies. In what relationships do you find it hardest for you to treat others as you’d wish to be treated? When the Grinch heard a glad sound, rather than a sad one, he was puzzled. Then he had a new thought, wrote Dr. Seuss. “‘Maybe Christmas,’ he thought, ‘doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas … perhaps … means a little bit more.’” How can you remember and celebrate the real meaning of Christmas this year? FINAL APPLICATION This week, pray for someone who you feel resentment toward. Ask God to help you let go of the pain and to bless that person. 6645 McCauley Trail West, Edina, MN 55439 ∙ 952-941-1094 ∙ www.crossview.net Its A Wonderful Life Small Group Study Guide Sunday, 12/13/2020 OPENING PRAYER Lord Jesus, we thank You for the wonder of all the relationships You make us a part of. Allow us to see them, enjoy them, and foster them. Open our hearts and eyes to see these relationships and speak Your love and truth into them. Help us to be Your messengers. Amen. SCRIPTURE PASSAGE Galatians 6:2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Hebrews 13:1-3 Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering. 6645 McCauley Trail West, Edina, MN 55439 ∙ 952-941-1094 ∙ www.crossview.net INTRODUCTION George Bailey was always thinking of the needs of others ahead of his own. When his father died, he set aside his hopes and dreams to run Bailey Building and Loan. When there was a run on the bank he gave up his honeymoon money so the bank would not close. But, George Bailey felt like his entire world was crashing down upon him when his uncle misplaced an $8,000 deposit. George was contemplating suicide until his guardian angel helped change his The word angel means messenger in both Greek and Hebrew. The kind of messengers God normally sends to resolve difficult circumstances aren’t the Clarence kind of messengers; he sends messengers like you and me. God sends people to show up and offer words of encouragement, to offer care in our time of need. He sends us if we are paying attention. That’s exactly what happened when George is in trouble. Mary, his wife, announced to the entire town that George was in bad trouble and needed help. They came and gave him the money he needed. QUESTIONS Do you believe in angels? Have you ever had an experience that you attribute to the help of an angel? Clarence the angel says to George, “Each man’s life touches so many other lives … You see, George, you've really had a wonderful life.” What are your thoughts on this statement? In the film, George Bailey cried, “You sit around here and spin your little webs and you think the whole world revolves around you and your money! Well, it doesn't, Mr. Potter!” Today’s headlines often suggest that the whole world DOES revolve around money and the power of people who have lots of it.
