Analysis of a new topotypic sample of P. formicarum from the Bug Creek Anthills locality provides an estimate of the range of variation of its postcanine denti- tion. The three currently recognized species occur in Puercan 1 (Pu1) interval zone faunas, but two other occurrences indicate that the genus originated and initially diversified prior to the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary. Rare occurrences at several localities and entries in faunal lists suggest even greater taxonomic diversity. Limited evidence suggests continued diversification in the later Puercan and possible survival of the genus into the Torrejonian.

The Gómez-Alba palaeontological collection of the MGB-MCNB. We present the catalogue of the palaeontological collection belonging to the late Dr. Julio Gómez-Alba, former curator of Palaeontology at Barcelona’s Museum of Geology, now integrated in Barcelona’s Natural History Museum Consortium. He proposed the donation of his collection to the city of Barcelona in November 2010 and the Barcelona’s Institute of Culture (ICUB) accepted it on the 11th February 2011. Formed by 4.990 specimens and 25 batches, it is not the col- lection of a palaeontological researcher but that of a general palaeontologist. Many items in this collection were figured in a field guide authored by Gómez-Alba (1988) dealing with the fossils of Spain and Europe. The catalogue is, apart from some minor corrections, the literal transcription of the database originally associated to the collection that –since its acceptation– has neither been updated nor revised.     Bull. Fla. Mus. Nat. Hist. (2005) 45(4): 355-361 355 EKGMOWECHASHALA (MAMMALIA, ?PRIMATES) FROM THE GULF COASTAL PLAIN L. Barry Albright III1 A single, small, water-worn tooth from the “middle” Arikareean Toledo Bend Local Fauna of the Gulf Coastal Plain closely resembles the lower fourth premolar of the questionable primate Ekgmowechashala. The only known species of the genus, Ekgmowechashala philotau Macdonald (1963), was originally recovered from the early Arikareean Sharps Formation of South Dakota, but is also known from similar aged strata of the John Day Formation, Oregon. Although the Toledo Bend specimen differs somewhat in morphology from the p4 of E. philotau, a new species is not named in this report because of such limited material and because the specimen is incomplete. Unfortunately, the specimen does not provide information that helps clarify current arguments regarding the affinities of Ekgmowechashala with primates or plagiomenids. It does, however, provide (1) a temporal range extension for the genus to the early late Arikareean, or about four million years younger than previously known, and (2) a geographic extension east and considerably south of its prior distribution. If Ekgmowechashala is ultimately deter- mined to belong to the Primates, then the Toledo Bend species would become the last known North American representative of the order. Alf Museum of Paleontology, Claremont, California 91711, USA. 3 The Webb Schools, Claremont, California 91711, USA The proximal end of a bird humerus recovered from the Paleocene Goler Formation of southern California is the oldest Cenozoic record of this clade from the west coast of North America. The fossil is characterized by a relatively large, dorsally-positioned head of the humerus and a subcircular opening to the pneumotricipital fossa, consistent with the Lithornithidae among known North American Paleocene birds, and is similar in size to Lithornis celetius. This specimen from the Tiffanian NALMA extends the known geographic range of lithornithids outside of the Rocky Mountains region in the United States. The inferred coastal depositional environment of the Goler Formation is consistent with a broad ecological niche of lithornithids. The age and geographic distribution of lithornithids in North America and Europe suggests these birds dispersed from North America to Europe in the Paleocene or by the early Eocene. During the Paleogene the intercontinental dispersal of lithornithids likely occurred alongside other known bird and mammalian movements that were facilitated by climatic and sea level changes.
