IT’S SIMPLY ‘WUNDER BAR’ AT QPAC! Evenings as epic as Wagner’s ‘Ring Cycle’

Get into the Festival mood and let your senses run wild at Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s (QPAC’s) Wunder Bar presented FREE from 8:30pm each Wednesday to Saturday during Brisbane Festival.

Featuring a stunning set piece from Wagner's epic opera, The Ring Cycle, Wunder Bar will be the official after-party destination for the 2011 Brisbane Festival, from 7 to 24 September, in QPAC’s Cascade Court.

Step into an extraordinary world of sassy soulstresses, Bohemian jazzmen, funked up folk singers, tango nuevo, stomping piano and swampy beats, every Wednesday to Saturday from 8.30pm till late.

Wunder Bar’s amazing line up of live entertainment includes a diverse collection of some of the best local, national and international bands. Each night will unveil an element of astonishment and wonder with Der Fleck, ‘The Spot’, where a special guest artist/act will be revealed to accentuate your Wunder Bar experience.

Wednesday 7 September LOOP.US & VJ JAYMIS Brisbane

LOOP.US is an acid jazz electronica band fusing beats, riffs and samples with live guitar, electric bass and drums. Get ready for a heady mix of grooves, new jazz and break beat funk, plucked live, melted to the core and remixed for your listening pleasure.

Thursday 8 September MIGUEL Brisbane

Sexier than gold lame and hotter than LA in August, it's Miguel, the 9 piece sensation, with their swingin', smokin' booty shakin', soul quakin' original brand of 50s and 60s big band jazz. Their signature crooning ‘moon-in-June’ vintage jazz will have you swooning in the aisles!

Friday 9 September BATUCADA SOUND MACHINE New Zealand

BSM is a dynamic 10-piece mixing Brazilian rhythms, funk, hip-hop, , dub and Pacific soul influences. Their blistering live performances have left crowds throughout NZ, Australia and the UK begging for more. BSM knows how to make a party move!

Saturday 10 September THE GOOD SHIP Brisbane

From gypsy to bush-band via cabaret, country and rock, The Good Ship are a 9 piece seething maelstrom of decadent musicality featuring a whole heap of archaic instrumentation from mandola, lagerphone, fiddle and trumpet to accordion.

Wednesday 14 September LAIQUE Brisbane

Laique tantalises audiences with their quirky and tempestuously charming brand of 30s Parisian jazz mixed with hot flamenco, tango, French manouche, street beats and gypsy swing. Guaranteed to ignite any stage, street, or prohibition era speak- easy!

Thursday 15 September THE IDEA OF NORTH Sydney

Vocal quartet, The Idea of North, sing jazz, pop, R&B, classical, folk, soul and gospel with sublime precision and incredible harmonies. In 2010 they won an Aria for Feels Like Spring in collaboration with tonight’s special mystery guest.

Friday 16 September Perth

Mama Kin’s bittersweet melodies soar with New Orleans style stomping piano and swampy beats, all the while traversing the riotous, the raw and the intimate. Fresh from a rollicking run of North American dates with The Trio, Mama Kin is sure to set your soul on fire.

Saturday 17 September TERRAPLEN & KING KOYA Argentina

Terraplen’s live techno show is an innovative form of house music, chill out and trip- hop. Argentinean rhythms such as bagualas, zambas and vidala are brought into the 21st century and onto the club floor in a sensual fusion of acoustic folk and electronic music.

Wednesday 21 September ALINE CALIXITO Brazil

A leading light in the new revolution in samba, Aline Calixito’s talent and enchanting voice earned her first place in the New Talents of the Old Samba Show, held in Rio at the legendary bar Carioca da Gema. Calixto is joined by 7 of the hottest musicians on the contemporary Brazilian samba scene.

Thursday 22 September EMMA DEAN & GUESTS Sydney

Emma Dean has become the guilty pleasure of the underground with appearances alongside Amanda Palmer, The Dresden Dolls and most recently playing the enigmatic Sally Bowles in Zen Zen Zo’s Cabaret. This unique performance event will feature guest appearances by Jacob Diefenbach and John Rodgers.

Friday 23 September ALDA REZENDE QUINTET Brazil/New Zealand/Australia

Alda Rezende is a household name in her native country Brazil. Singing Jazz, Bossa Nova and Samba, she performs with la crème de la crème of Australian jazz and master Brazilian percussionist Esdra “Nenem” Ferreira, all the way from Belo Horizonte.

Saturday 24 September LEGENDS OF CUBA PROJECT Cuba/Australia

Chukale’s new afro-Cuban salsa album, Expeditions, features five Havana based musicians drawn from the legendary Buena Vista Social Club, Afro Cuban All Stars and Orquestra Ritmo Oriental. These musicians will journey to Australia for this very special album launch concert.
