NORTH ISLES AWARDS 2016 Logos Friday 18th November 2016 Baltasound Hall, Baltasound, Unst To celebrate the best of living and working in the North Isles and it’s people For more information please telephone Kellie or Selina on 01957 711449 The North Isles of Shetland are getting set for a new and exciting event which will take place on Friday the 18th of November 2016: The North Isles Awards. The North Isles Tourism Team at Unst Partnership are delighted to be organising these fun and light hearted awards to celebrate all that is great about living and working in Unst, Yell & Fetlar and it’s people. Readers have the nest two weeks until Friday 28th October to forward their suggestions to decide which people in the North Isles of Unst, Yell and Fetlar are worthy of recognition. We are really looking forward to receiving your nominations. If you want to have your say, please make sure that you fill out the coupon opposite and post it or deliver it to Unst Partnership office at Hagdale Industrial Estate in Baltasound Unst. Alternatively you can email your suggestions to [email protected] or [email protected] with all nominations to reach us by 5pm on Friday 28th October. Following a public Facebook vote between the 3 islands, the awards ceremony will take place in Unst. The vote had over 150 responses, with Unst just taking the lead from Yell, with Fetlar in third. We hope that lots of local people will come together from the three islands to join us at the awards event which to take place at the Baltasound Hall. Nominations can also be made online by e-mail or by forwarding suggestions to us via facebook.com/visit unst or facbook.com/visit yell. Once the nominations have been received they will be judged and there will be three people nominated in each category. Each person will be invited to attend the awards ceremony with a partner. The winners will be announced at the presentation evening on Friday 18th November hosted by North Isles Tourism Team at the Baltasound Hall. We will be selling tickets through the Unst Partnership office and these will cost £20 each including a three course dinner and a glass of bubbly on arrival. .

Unst Community Development Plan Consultation Summary report following an ‘Ideas Day’ Held in Unst on the 23rd of October 2010. 1. Summary Unst Partnership (a company Ltd by Guarantee with Charitable Status) was established in 2000 in response to the closure of the Unst airport. The drawdown and departure of the RAF in 2006 created a further economic setback; the population almost halved, and Between 1999 and 2007 it is estimated that FTE (full time equivalent) jobs fell by 175 or 42%.1 During the last ten years, the Unst Partnership has sought to regenerate the island through a number of initiatives. The island remains economically fragile, though population decline appears to be stabilising and considerable strategic opportunity exists to safeguard and further develop infrastructure, business and the tourism industry on the island. Unst Partnership recognises the need for the whole Unst community to work together to make the best use of resources and wishes to adopt a more strategic approach to community development, considering this to be particularly important during the current financial climate. The Partnership is committed to building its reputation as a progressive community development company, and has acknowledged that full community involvement in, and ownership of, its activities is crucial in order to effect real change. Unst Partnership wishes to see a Community Development Plan compiled on Unst, and is currently working with community members, community groups, businesses and stakeholders to gather views, identify priorities and establish potential projects for implementation. North Isles Geology SHETLAND HERITAGE TRAILS Discover the North Isles... 1 In the North Isles of Shetland you get a real sense of Shetland’s 2 geological journey. Walk over 500 million year old rocks from an ancient ocean floor, view the dramatic storm eroded coastline of Britain’s most northerly point and discoverthe forces at work in the building of a huge mountain chain! 4 Unst and Fetlar - an ancient ocean floor exposed 420 million years ago an ancient ocean called the Iapetus was beginning to close. The landmasses of America and Europe on either side of the Iapetus began to “drift” towards one another and the ocean disappeared. During this closure, part of the floor of the ancient ocean was trapped and thrust up onto the nearby North American continent. 5 3 This ancient ocean crust (an ophiolite) now forms the eastern parts of Unst and Fetlar. Western Unst is the remnants of that ancient American continent. Statement on Sustainable Development in the North Isles of Shetland
www.islanddynamics.org Statement on Sustainable Development in the North Isles of Shetland resulting from Investing in Small Island Recovery, an Island Dynamics conference that took place in Shetland on 16‒22 April 2012 Between 16 April and 22 April 2012, an international group of 17 scholars and practitioners working in small island environments met in Shetland for an Island Dynamics conference. Investing in Small Islands Recovery considered the economies of Shetland’s North Isles in order to acquire knowledge of small island development and possibly provide insight into how Shetland’s communities might be sustained. This conference was a collaboration between Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Harris Centre and the University of the West of Scotland’s Scottish Centre for Island Studies. Founded in Shetland in 2009, Island Dynamics undertakes conferences, retreats, and research projects that explore issues facing small islands around the globe. Other Island Dynamics events have taken or will soon take place in Lerwick, Malta, Spitsbergen, and North Cyprus. With Nordabrake at Saxa Vord as our base, we visited residents, authorities, development workers, educators, and community champions in Yell, Unst, Fetlar, and Lerwick. Delegates also presented their own international research to North Isles residents during a public workshop. As participants of Investing in Small Island Recovery, we wish to make the following statement on the basis of our visit to Shetland and our expertise and experience from island communities in the North Sea, North and South Atlantic, Caribbean, Baltic, Mediterranean, and South Pacific. This report provides the results of the consultation and sets out annual targets for delivering priorities between 2011 and 2015. A shorter and more accessible version of this document has been prepared for circulation throughout the community and to local community groups. The main feedback from the community is that Unst needs to be able to sustain its population in order for it to grow. The areas of great importance that have been highlighted are employment, education, health and social care services, housing, and tourism. Families are the heart of the Island. Introduction Between October 2010 and March 2011, a community engagement exercise was carried out in Unst. This was led by Unst Partnership Ltd, a registered Company and Charitable organisation established in 2000 with the purpose of stimulating economic and community development on the island. The need for this was identified by the Unst Partnership as a means of placing the aspirations of the community at the forefront of forward planning. The community engagement exercise included public meetings, online and postal surveys, interviews with young people, and a postcard consultation.
