September 2018 Nicholas Morgan Supervisors: Dr. Anwen Elias and Dr. Brieg Powel Department of International Politics, Aberystwyth University Abstract This thesis argues that "national subjectivity" is a valuable concept which can provide a more nuanced and comprehensive conceptual understanding of national identity than is currently available. Using notions of discourse and subjectivity developed by Michel Foucault and the Essex School of Discourse Theory, and taking Wales as a case- study, it advances a theoretical framework for exploring and bringing new insights to the national self and the role of the nation in people’s daily lives. The theoretical framework puts forth an understanding of the national self that investigates the discursive production of the individual as a national subject, the nature of national subjectivity, and the ethical implications of national subjectivities, such that a national subjectivity confers ethical schemata which shape the conduct, values, choices and other aspects of the individual’s day-to-day life. Using interview data collected through field work carried out with Welsh language learners in three regions within Wales, this thesis empirically examines the insights that this theoretical framework can contribute to the understanding of the national self, and its complex, fluid, self- constructed, creatively negotiated, and impactful nature. When, for series 4 (sub- titled Miracle Day, much as the miniseries produced as series 3 was subti- tled Children of Earth), the production (and diegesis) moved primarily to the United States as a co-production between BBC Worldwide and Amer- ican premium cable broadcaster Starz, fan response was negative from the announcement, with the series being termed Americanised in popular and academic discourse. This study, drawn from my doctoral research, which interrogates all of these assumptions via textual, industrial/contextual and audience analysis focusing upon ideological, aesthetic and interpretations of national identity representation, focuses upon the interactions between fan cultural capital and national cultural capital and how those interactions impact others of the myriad of reasons why the (re)glocalisation failed. It finds that, in part due to the competing public service and commercial ide- ologies of the BBC, Torchwood was a glocalised text from the beginning, de- spite its positioning as Welsh, which then became glocalised again in series 4.

    Thanks to the Learning & Work Institute for inviting me to deliver the lecture tonight and to Open University Cymru for their support. And of course, thank you to everyone here at the Redhouse. It’s a real honour to be able to speak to you here in this building so full of history and indeed this town that holds such a special place within the story of Wales. And it is with a great deal of humility that I stand before you today to deliver a lecture that bears the name of Raymond Williams. His brilliance, his insight and his compassion make his writing as powerful and as illuminating today as it has ever been. In preparation for today I went over much of what he wrote specifically about Wales and Welsh identity and culture, not necessarily what his international reputation has been based upon, and it has been absolutely fascinating. In his piece ‘Welsh Culture’, written in 1975, he wrote, “The feeling for the past is more than a fancy, but it’s how past and present relate that tells in a culture.” And it is exactly his grasp of that relationship between our past and our present here in Wales, and the challenges we face in exploring concepts like identity and nationhood, that is for me both inspiring and, in these particular circumstances, arse-shakingly intimidating. So, I’ll begin with the only thing I feel I have any kind of authority to be able to stand here and speak to you about, which is - myself. My own personal experience.
