The new species is distinguished from all congeners by the presence of a small, naked area on snout tip; by having the abdomen covered with small platelets forming a shield which reaches the lateral mid-ventral plates; by the anterior profile of the head rounded in dorsal view; by the lower lip not reaching the transversal line of the pectoral girdle; and by the presence of 28 or 29 vertebrae. High genetic divergence in mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) further supports the validity of this new species. Our phylogenetic analysis shows a derived subclade in Corumbataia, herein named as the Corumbataia cuestae group, composed of the new species plus C. cuestae, C. tocantinensis, C. britskii, C. liliai, and C. lucianoi. This group is defined by having Submitted July 8, 2020 a conspicuous crest of hypertrophied odontodes on head; absence of the adipose Accepted November 9, 2020 fin or a single series of platelets at adipose-fin position; and anastomosis of the by Gloria Arratia infraorbital and otic sensory canals over the pterotic-supracleithrum.

Shubin, The University of Chicago, Chicago, IL, and approved October 6, 2017 (received for review June 18, 2017) The relative importance of different modes of evolution in shap- ties of these methods, nor is much known about the prevalence of ing phenotypic diversity remains a hotly debated question. Fos- pulsed change throughout some of Earth’s most intensely stud- sil data suggest that stasis may be a common mode of evolution, ied clades. while modern data suggest some lineages experience very fast Here, we examine evidence for pulsed evolution across ver- rates of evolution. One way to reconcile these observations is to tebrate taxa, using a method for fitting L´evy processes to com- imagine that evolution proceeds in pulses, rather than in incre- parative data. These processes can capture both incremental and ments, on geological timescales. To test this hypothesis, we devel- pulsed modes of evolution in a single, simple framework. We oped a maximum-likelihood framework for fitting Levy´ processes apply this method to analyze 66 vertebrate clades containing to comparative morphological data. This class of stochastic pro- 8,323 extant species for evidence of pulsed evolution by compar- cesses includes both an incremental and a pulsed component. We ing the statistical fit of several varieties of L´evy jump processes found that a plurality of modern vertebrate clades examined are (modeling different types of pulsed evolution) to three models best fitted by pulsed processes over models of incremental change, that emphasize alternative macroevolutionary dynamics.

THE SOUTH AMERICAN NEMATOGNATHI OF THE MUSEUMS AT LEIDEN AND AMSTERDAM by J. W. B. VAN DER STIQCHEL (Museum voor het OnderwSs, 's-Gravenhage) The collections of the South American Nematognathi in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden, referred to in this publication as "Mu• seum Leiden", and of those in the Zoologisch Museum at Amsterdam, referred to as "Museum Amsterdam", consist of valuable material, which for a very important part has not been studied yet. I feel very much obliged to Prof. Dr. H. Boschma who allowed me to start with the study of the Leiden collections and whom I offer here my sincere thanks. At the same time I want to express my gratitude towards Prof. Dr. L. F. de Beaufort, who has been so kind to place the collection of the Zoological Museum at Amsterdam at my disposal. Furthermore I am greatly indebted to Dr. F. P. Koumans at Leiden for his assistance and advice to solve the various problems which I met during my study. The material dealt with here comes from a large number of collections of different collectors, from various areas of South America, it consists of 125 species, belonging to 14 families of the order Nematognathi. Contrary to the original expectations no adequate number of specimens from Surinam could be obtained to get a sufficient opinion about the occurrence of the various species, and, if possible, also about their distribution in this tropical American part of the Netherlands. On the whole the collections from Surinam were limited to the generally known species only.

Like these, the review now presented is mainly based on the extensive material assembled during the period 1963 to 1967 by the zoologists carrying out the Biological Brokopondo Research Project, sponsored by the Netherlands Foundation for the Advancement of Research in Surinam and the Nether- lands Antilles (WOSUNA), the Netherlands Foundation for the Advan- cement of Tropical Research (WOTRO), the Rijksmuseum van Natuur- lijke Historie at Leiden, and the Zoölogisch Museum at Amsterdam. Besides these specimens, now included in the collections of the Museums at Am- sterdam (ZMA) and Leiden (RMNH), additional material was provided by 4 ZOOLOGISCHE VERHANDELINGEN 116 (1971) the British Museum (Natural History) (BM), the Chicago Museum of Natural History (FMNH), and the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle (MNHN).
