3. CULTURAL, HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL

Increasing the awareness of Prague inhabitants about Prague streams, their history, and their role in the urban landscape. The restoration of the historical channels is based on contemporary documents and historical maps.

Usage of watercourses as green corridors of the city and inclusion of revitalized areas into the citywide system of greenery with a high recre- ational potential. During the revitalization process, emphasis is placed on the aesthetic and recreational value of the landscape along the watercourses.

The Báňský Stream springs in the district of known as Na Báních in . The stream is 700 metres long and the difference in elevation of its upstream and downstream endpoints is 80 metres. Seven stone dikes were built along its course to re- duce the gradient, as well as channel ero- sion. The three lower dikes were in a very poor condition. The Báňský Stream has the character of a torrent stream, its ravine cuts its way down a narrow gullet and overco- mes a considerable difference in elevation over a relatively short distance. In terms of aquosity, the stream is largely dependent on precipitation, namely on storm rainfall. The upper half of the stream is without constant water discharge for a major part of the year. Continual discharge is noticeable only from the middle stream, which is fed by a foun- tain on the left bank. The weir on the Botič Stream in the district of Pe- trovice was built in the 17th century. Its main purpose was to increase the water level in the stream so that water could be diverted to a mill in Petrovice through a millrace. When the mill had been closed down after the World War II, the millrace was no longer serving its function and some of its parts were filled in. A few rem- nants of the millrace, however, are still visible on the right side of the Botič Stream below the weir and Eu- klidova Street. In the following years, the weir was ra- ther neglected and it was gradually decaying. In early 2004, only a torso of the original weir remained stan- ding with remnants of its sidewalls that could come tumbling down at any time. The banks above the weir were washed out at several places, the trees on the banks were bending over the stream, and the back of the weir was clogged with mud. Therefore, a project aimed at the reconstruction of the weir and the revitalization of its close surroundings was launched in 2004. With a view of its financial de-

The Botič is the largest and the best-known Prague stre- am. It springs to the southwest of Prague in the vicinity of the municipality of Čenětice. It flows into the Vltava River near the railway bridge at Výtoň. In the section in front of Fidlovačka, the lining of the channel had been in an emer- gency condition for some time. The section is 183 metres long and it begins at the bridge in Závišova Street in front of Fidlovačka and ends at the bridge in Na Folimance Street. The central concrete part of the stream bed was comple- tely disintegrated, the remaining part was lined with disrup- ted stone paving and crumbling concrete. The channel slo- pes were covered with, among other plants, the tree of hea- ven and the hop tree, which are deemed invasive and unde- sirable plant species. Within the revitalization process, the channel was newly lined with stone paving and naturalized. The original paving and the remaining concrete were removed and the whole channel was thoroughly cleaned.

The channel of the Botič Stream in the district of Záběhlice was severely affected by human activity. Waste dumps, landfills, and illegally built structures in the close vici- nity of the Botič Stream resulted in the total degradation of the channel at some locati- ons. The waste dumps along the banks were gradually taken away by high waters and the vegetation growing on such sites was beco- ming a threat. The project of close-to-nature stabilization and cleaning of the channel fo- cused on a 400-metre long section between Záběhlická and K Prádelně streets. Within the project, illegal structures were removed from the channel of the Bo- tič Stream and some of the trees along its banks that could not be saved due to the- ir extremely washed-out roots were felled. The stream banks were cleaned and stabi- lized with the aid of large boulders. During the floods in 2002, some parts of the channel and the banks of the Botič Stream in this area were severely damaged and disrupted. In the past, the height of the left bank was artificial- ly raised by construction waste. The bank, large- ly overgrown with black locust almost 1.5 metres high at some places, channelled high water du- ring increased flow rates to the lower right bank, which caused the flooding of adjacent structures. As a part of anti-flood measures, the mana- ger of the watercourse, i.e. the Department of En- vironmental Protection of the Prague City Hall, commissioned a project aimed at the overall revi- talization and widening of this part of the channel. Within the execution of the project, the origi- nally deposited construction waste was removed from the bank to a distance of approximately nine metres from the channel. According to historical records, a small pond was lo- cated above the statue of St. John of Nepomuk. Within the revitalization process, the historical water body was renewed by building a small pool with an overflow dike modelled to resemble a terrain fault. A part of the existing pipeline in front of the statue of St. John of Nepomuk diverts the stream away from this historical site and allows it to resurface near the dry re- tention reservoir. The newly built channel is 20–30 cen- timetres deep and its leads across the reservoir up to the dam where it flows into the Motolský Stream. Three smaller pools were built in the vicinity of the stream to li- ven-up the whole area. Overall, the project resulted in the extension of the channel of the Cibulka Stream and in the increased at- tractiveness of the Homolka dry retention reservoir, which had been used for recreational purposes rather scarcely until then.

The catch basin on the Dalejský Stream may be found in Ve Výrech Street in the municipal district of Řeporyje. In the past, there were two small ponds on the site. The upper pond no lon- ger exists and the lower pond was rebuilt to serve as a catch basin. The main function of a catch ba- sin is to catch sediments coming from upstream. The sediments are deposited in the basin and do not silt up the channel further downstream. In or- der to function properly, the catch basin requires regular cleaning. The catch basin was built in the early 20th cen- tury and it was in a very poor condition. The ori- ginal stone walls were disintegrating, the outlet structure was damaged and the whole basin was clogged with mud. This led the watercourse ma- nager to a decision to completely reconstruct the whole basin. The stone embankment walls of the basin were repaired with the use of limestone, which was commonly used in the area. Next to the spillway, a new outlet structure was built along with an access for vehicles. The ori- ginal stone step above the basin – a remnant of the former upper pond – was taken apart and re- built into a rough boulder ramp. While the basin retains its primary sediment catchment function, it has been remodelled into a flow through pond. The project also involved the cleaning of the catch basin surroundings, liquidation of illegal waste dumps and removal of self-seeded ruderal vegetation, namely acacias. As a non-native tree, the acacia is considered an invasive species sup- pressing natural native vegetation. The project was closely linked to the previous phase, during which illegal waste dumps in Ve Výrech Street had been removed and the who- le channel of the Dalejský Stream had been clea- ned and remodelled.

The Klukovice swimming pool was built in the 1930s as a part of the sun baths. The original woodless val- ley and the nearby train stop ensured abundant pre- sence of holidaymakers from Prague. Small depth, ap- prox. 1.1 m, very cold water and frequent clogging of the swimming pool by mud and stones gradually wor- sened water quality and, last but not least, the shading of the beaches ended the activity of the swimming pool in the 1960s. Since then, the entire swimming pool fell into dis- repair and up till now there have only been decaying concrete structures that have remained in the Dalej- ský Creek. In 2012 the flow manager decided to de- finitively eliminate the remains of the swimming pool and to return the natural look to the Dalejský Creek. In the spring of 2013 all concrete structures were knoc- ked down. The left crashed bank was cleaned up to the rock wall, the right one was settled and left in the natural state. Another revitalization of the Hostavický Creek was carri- ed out in 2015 in Dubec above the Retention Reservoir Sla- tina in the length of 266 m. Originally there was a concre- ted channel of the creek, there were concrete steps and a gully holes. As a part of the revitalization the original channel of the creek was covered with a new, nature close, meandering channel which corresponds more to current demands for watercourses and nature conservation. Due to the fact that the rainwater from Mecholupy made floods above the re- servoir, a large berm with pools for the conversion of large waters was created there. Just above the place, where the channel flows to the Retention Reservoir Slatina, the revita- lization of the channel was terminated and the water spills into a small wetland. Revitalization was complemented by planting trees and shrubs and the whole berm was gras- sed over. The aim of this revitalization was to integrate the Hostavický Creek into the surrounding greenery and con- nect it to the Retention Reservoir Slatina. Hostavický Creek – revitalization in Dolni Pocernice

The last revitalization of the Hostavický Creek was accomplished in Dolni Pocernice in 2015. With respect to the property law relations the revitalization was pro- posed in the length of 1.1-2.0 km from the Ceskobrod- ska Street to the confluence with the Sterboholsky Cre- ek. The stream served here ‘only for the transmission of water’ and its ecological, aesthetic and landscape value was minimal. The surroundings of the creek were mo- dified rather into a park with several children’s playg- rounds and forest with scattered greenery that was part- ly in a very poor condition, especially the vegetation of our non-indigenous Acer negundo with damaged stabi- lity. The aim of the revitalization of the Hostavický Creek was to integrate the watercourse into the surrounding greenery to increase the ecological, aesthetic and re- creational potential of the area. As a part of the revitalization the whole area was first cleaned up and a larger sunken area called berm was Pool Deepening a new riverbed Riverbed and pool Mapa revitalizace created. A smaller meandering channel of the Hostavic- ký Creek was modelled there. The small riverbed serves for normal flows, the berm serves for flood flows. The berm is grassed and integrated into the surrounding ter- rain in such a way that it gradually copies its surroun- Revitalization dings. The original riverbed was covered almost in a full of the riverbed length. A section where the watercourses are flowing into the creek was only left in the original route. Several pools small water bodies have been created around the creek especially for amphibians. A visitor can walk along the creek on new gravel roads through the entire area. The original footpaths across the creek were left here and allow access to the locali- ty from the Street V Zahorskem. Several benches were added along the paths and new play elements were pla- ced in the playground. The project was co-financed by the Operational Pro- gram Prague – Competitiveness.

The overall modification of the valley of the Cho- dovecký Creek took place in the mid-1970s in con- nection with the construction of the Southern Town. Three retention reservoirs were built on the creek. They are used to capture rain water in the territo- ry of the Southern Town – . By bringing ra- inwater into the creek the riverbed capacity increa- sed and the original natural riverbed had to be sta- bilized. Flagstones were used for fortification and the riverbed was straightened. This created too dif- ficult element in such a gentle environment and the nature has shown its disagreement with this treat- ment very quickly. In 2011 there were only a few stones left in the 2.5 m deep shore instead of the original fortificati- on. On both sides the entire valley was filled with soil and construction waste from the construction of the housing estates. Some of the trees are visible as they have been protruding from the concrete till now and they cannot be removed. The Košíkovský Stream flows into the Botič Stream from the left side below the Hostivař Dam. During the construction of the Chodov housing estate, the upper part of the stream was diverted into an underground pipeline and connected to the storm sewer system. In the section between Mírového hnutí Street and the retention reservoirs, the stream channel was pa- ved with stones laid in concrete. The vegetation that eventually started growing in the channel (i.e. self-revitalization) returned an al- most natural character to the Košíkovský Stream. De- spite its relative massiveness, the lining of the chan- nel, especially in the section of two steps and the pi- peline mouth, was of poor quality and thus frequent and extremely high flow rates led to the destruction of the steps, as well as the surrounding bed. Moreover, the extent of the damage was continuously growing. In order to stabilize the channel, the manager of the watercourse carried out repair works with the use of revitalization elements. The Krutecký Stream is the right-side tributary of the Litovecký and Šárecký Stream. Its catchment area is situated on the southern slope of the valley of Šárka between the Džbán open air swimming pool and the Vltava River. The whole territory is a part of the Šárka-Lysolaje Na- ture Park and its most valuable sections have been declared a small-si- ze protected areas. In this location, the Krutecký Stream may be divided into two chara- cteristic parts. The first part (upstream wise) began at a culvert under a local road between a gardening colony and Horoměřická Street and it continued down a 100-metre long concrete channel. The second part, which is approximately 160 metres long, led through a concrete chan- nel between Na Krutci Street and a ruderal meadow with illegal was- te dumps. Due to the unfavourable condition, the Department of Environmen- tal Protection decided to revitalize 260 metres of the Krůtecký Stream. All concrete gutters were removed from the first part of the stream and moderate bends were created on the channel between the forest path and the local road. The remains of the old straight bed were inte- grated in the new channel only in the form of several small pools. In the second part, the route of the channel was modified to allow Pool in the Krutecký Stream after revitalization Stream crossing the stream to once again meander along the valley line.. The source of the Litovicko-Šárecký Stream may be found in the district of Prague-West, approximately 1.5 kilometres to the west of the municipality of Chýně. It flows through the Baš- ta Pond and continues through the Břevský, Kalu and Litovic- ký ponds to the town of Hostivice. The stream then flows throu- gh the Strnad retention reservoir situated in the eastern part of the cadastral territory of Hostivice. Just before the Jiviny reten- tion reservoir, the stream enters the territory of the capital city of Prague in the district of Ruzyně. From there, it flows to Li- boc where it feeds the Libocký Pond and it continues via Vo- kovice to the Šárka-Lysolaje Nature Park where it flows throu- gh the Džbán water reservoir. The Litovicko-Šárecký Stream flows into the Vltava River near the east end of the nature park. In the 1960s, a massive project was launched, the aim of which was to divert the Litovecký and Šárecký Stream into a underground waterway leading under the Ruzyně Prison and all the way up to the Hvězda Game Preserve. The revitalized part of the stream begins at the mouth of the former underg- round waterway in the vicinity of the intersection of Ruzyňská and Stochovská streets. The revitalization of the Litovicko-Šárecký Creek conti- nued in the park in front of the Ruzyně Prison in 2011. His- torically, there used to be a pond. In the 1960s the riverbed was straightened and concreted into a trapezoidal shape which resulted in the separation of the water element from the adjacent park. In addition, under normal flow conditi- ons approximately 5 cm of water flowed down the bottom of the creek, which is wholly unsatisfactory for aquatic fau- na and flora. As a part of the revitalization the original concrete river- bed was demolished and the creek, as well as the Hvěz- da Game Reserve, were stabilized by a heavy stone layer. Deep and shallower bundles were formed in the bottom, so that even under low flow conditions there was plenty of wa- ter in the riverbed. In order to interconnect water and the surrounding gree- nery the left bank was reduced in several places and a gra- dual access to water was accomplished. Several stones for sitting were placed on the shore. The revitalized riverbed was planted with wetland vegetation. The Motolský Creek springs in Stodulky and flows into the Vltava River at the Palacky Bridge. The spring of the creek is located near the Zlicin underground station under the com- mercial and shopping area. Out of the total length of 9.9 km the lower part is totally covered part in the length of 4.2 km and the upper part is partly covered in the length of 5.6 km. The main tributaries of the Motolský Creek include the Broken Brook and the Cibulka Creek. On the stream there are five ponds and two dry retention reservoirs Homolka and Tatra Zli- cin, which are used for capturing torrential rain. In its upper part the Motolský Creek flew through an open channel in the recent past and it was covered only at the in- tersection of the roads. With the development of transport and increasing requirements for building sites, in the first half of the 1980s almost half of the route of this upper part of the ri- verbed was unfortunately gradually covered. The constantly open part of the creek is therefore outside the spring part, only from the Ponds to the Cibulka Pond. The Nebušický Creek springs in Nebušice just above the village square pond (formerly a fire tank). In the surroundings of the pond the creek is hidden in a pipeline and comes back to the surfa- ce in the Street Pod Hláskem. Approximately after 250 m, thanks to the permeable subsoil, the water in the creek disappears and appears in the Nebu- šice Retention Reservoir under the sewage treat- ment plant. It flows together with the Litovicko-Šá- recký Creek under Jenerálka where it enters the private Pond Dubak. Due to the development of the new sites and the increase of the proportion of paved areas in Nebušice, the rainwater that flows into the stre- am has increased significantly in recent years. Because of the unstable subsoil, the erosion and recession of the riverbed have soon followed. At some places erosion ridges reach up to 2.5 m of the erosion groove. Some private parcels in the neighbourhood were also threatened. The revitalization of the stream channels in the area of the Čihadla dry retention reservoir is the largest and the most extensive close-to-nature project aimed at re- vitalizing watercourses in Prague and its surroundings. The Čihadla dry retention reservoir was built in the 1980s and its primary function is to retain storm rainfall from the Rokytka catchment area. The reservoir is built on the site of a large pond, which had served its purpo- se until the 18th century when it was gradually drained and transformed into agricultural land. Within the construction of the dry retention reser- voir, the channels of the Hostavický, Svépravický and Ro¬kytka streams from their confluence with the Hosta- vický Stream were straightened and lined with concre- te blocks. Since the whole area is designated for the spreading of flood water, the straightening and lining of the channels was purposeless and it only depreciated the value of the location, which is a part of the Klánovi- ce-Čihadla Nature Park. The revitalization process began with the filling of the old, high-capacity channels lined with concrete, and it continued with the excavation of new, close-to- nature channels that would be shallow and meande- Vegetation in the new pool Original straightened channel of Rokytka ring. Small pools were created at the crossings of the new and old channels. The banks of the pools have gradually declining, as well as steep banks to allow the development of fauna and flora. In addition, new footbridges across the streams were built and information boards dedicated to revitalization and protection of the environment were installed as a part of the project. The new channels were planted with 200 young tre- es, namely alders, ashes, maples and oaks, as well as with shrubs solely from our native woody plants, such as black thorns, guelder roses, spindle trees and wil- lows. Rokytka near the Hořejší Pond has undergone many major changes in the last century. It originally flew directly through the Hořejší Pond. In 1961 a divi- ding dike was built and the pond was rebuilt to the side pond, as a part of the reconstruction of the pond and the natural swimming pool. To fill the pond a stage was built on the basin and the riverbed was paved. Down the stream an experimental hydrostatic weir, called the Jermaruv weir, was built. The Rokytka riverbed was converted and concreted into the shape of a trapezoid under the pond within the construction of the Prumys- lova Street. As a part of the revitalization of this part of Rokytka the remains of the non-functional Jermaruv weir and the accompanying concrete structures were removed. The height difference of the channel above and below the weir was solved by a boulder slip. The boulder slip also replaced the original step of the pond. Both slides are accessible for fish that occur in Rokytka. Rokytka also experienced significant changes un- der the hill of Smetanka. Historically there was a me- andering riverbed and even a millrace. In the 19th century Rokytka was there and the surroundings were covered. The shores then overgrown by impassable clusters of the acacia. The revitalization in this part of Rokytka included the removal of landfills, extension and division of the riverbed and creation of the organic berma. Two small islands and one kingfisher wall were built in the ba- sin. They have often occurred in this area but did not have suitable nesting conditions. Several trunks from the surrounding felled trees have been inserted and stabilized the creek. They will serve as dead wood in the water, which is a very important part of aqua- tic ecosystems. The Rokytka riverbed over the Hořejší Pond was straightened at the beginning of the 20th century and the shores were plan- ted with almonds and pear trees. It took time to realize that revitalization of the Řepský Creek was very demanding. The first obstacle to the project that lasted several years was the construction of the Prague orbital which did not inclu- de the Řepský Creek. The solution was found in 2006 when the slip road from the Karlovarska Street was built. During the construction of the drainage of the road the interconnection of the ditches with the rainwater sewer system was successfully introduced, leading further to the Litovicko-Šárecký Creek. Thus, the access to the Řepský Cre- ek was opened and the first stage of the project could start. It was the connection of the drainage water, which flew into the detention basin Repy III, then continued directly into the riverbed of the Řep- ský Creek, and cleared the channel along the allotment. In 2010 another part of the revitalization took place. It consisted of ploughing the Zalansky Street and the connection of the drainage water from the existing rainwater sewer system into the Pond Pise- cak. During the excavation there was an interesting moment from a historical perspective when the drainage monument of the monaste- ry was historically discovered. The last stage of the revitalization, which started in the area of the Lake Hlinik and led to the Penny Market, was again suspended for several years due to a complex and unsettled property-law relati- ons. All necessary authorisations were obtained in 2012 and a year New riverbed and pools later a building permit was issued. The aim of this last part of the project, which was carried out in 2014, was to bring water from the lake Hlinik under the railway line and the Street Na Chobote to the area above the Penny Market. The stream in the Royal Game Preserve is not a natural watercourse. Originally, it served as a tail race for a pond founded by Emperor Ferdi- nand I in 1548. During the reign of Emperor Ru- dolph II, a new large pond was built with an area of 20 hectares. It was fed by water from the Vl- tava River, which was supplied by the so-called Rudolph‘s Tunnel leading through the Letná Hill. The tunnel has been supplying water to all exi- sting ponds in the Stromovka Park to this day. The revitalization was the result of the long- term unsatisfactory condition of the stream. Due to its minimum gradient and relatively large wa- ter depth (up to 1 metre), the stream was conti- nuously clogged with leaves and sediments and required regular cleaning. The channel was often 2 or even 3 metres wide, with deep and almost vertically washed out banks at many locations as a result of frequent cleaning. Overall, the stream seemed quite gloomy and neglected, particularly in the newly renovated areas of the park. This revitalization is built on the modifi- cations made in 2008 and covers the area between the Dry Polder Čihadla, the Pond V Piskovne and the Pond Martinak. Its main part, which was completed in 2015, is the mo- dification of the originally straightened Svépra- vický Creek, which served more like a draina- ge channel here than a creek. The bottom of the creek was increased by 1.5 m and a new meandering riverbed, local- ly stabilized by a stone basin, was modelled in the newly emerging area, which reached up to a width of 10 m. The concrete step into the sandpit at the millrace was cancelled and re- placed by a short stone slide, thanks to which the riverbed was widened and a small water area was created here. This modification consisted of the recon- struction of the bridge across the creek. The

The Zátišský Creek springs in Lhotka under a for- mer swimming pool and the three ponds are built the- re: The Pond U Vodotoku, the Zátišský Pond and the Hodkovicky Reservoir. In the 1970s an extensive stabilization of the river- bed and its straightening was carried out within the process of building up the sites in the surroundings of the Zatisske Valley and the sedimentation of rain- water from the surrounding settlements into the cre- ek. The river was stabilized by wooden fences and stone steps. The Pond U Vodotoku and the Zátišský Pond were repaired, as well as the Hodkovicky Re- servoir. However, the volume of water in the Zátišský Creek was greater than the newly modified riverbed could hold and soon the destruction of the fortificati- on of the riverbed took place. The local stream had left the original riverbed completely and created a new ri- verbed nearby. The largest erosion groove was up to 4 m deep and the private land in the neighbourhood was also endangered in some places.
