  • Analysis of Rainfall Over Saudi Arabia
JKAU: Met., Env. & Arid Land Agric. Sci., Vol. 22, No. 2, pp: 59-78 (2011 A.D./1432 A.H.) DOI: 10.4197/Met. 22-2.4 Analysis of Rainfall over Saudi Arabia A. Mashat and H. Abdel Basset Department of Meteorology, Faculty of Meteorology, Environment, and Arid Land Agriculture, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Abstract..In this study, rainfall over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is analyzed using data from available meteorological stations. The analysis of these data shows that the highest amount of rainfall occurs during the spring over the southwest, middle and east of KSA. The second highest amount of rainfall occurs during winter over the east and northeast of KSA. The season of the lowest amount of rainfall over KSA is summer, when, except in the mountainous area in the southwest region, the amount of rainfall is very small. While the horizontal distribution pattern of rainfall during autumn is somewhat similar to that during spring, the amount of rainfall in autumn is smaller than that in spring. The most significant synoptic feature appears in spring when the cold air associated with secondary Mediterranean depressions meets the moist hot southerly air associated with Red Sea trough over KSA. 1. Introduction The amount of rainfall that falls over an area is an important factor in assessing the amount of water available to meet the various demands of agriculture, industry, and other human activities. Study of the distribution of rainfall over time and space is therefore very important for the welfare of a national economy. Many applications of rainfall data are enhanced by knowledge of the actual distribution of rainfall over a specified area rather than relying on simple summary statistics.

Conference of the International Journal of Arts and Sciences 1(17): 3 - 37 (2009) CD-ROM. ISSN: 1943-6114 © InternationalJournal.org Sustainable Development of Agriculture and Water Resources in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Khodran H. Al-Zahrani, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Abstract: This research paper presents valuable information and figures in relation to the Agricultural development plans in Saudi Arabia despite the harsh and unsuitable climate and other conditions for a normal agricultural production. The experience of Saudi Arabia in increasing and improving the production of many agricultural products worth to be presented in many world wide conferences and scientific meetings. Since the year 1970 when the first five year’s development plan started until the year 1999, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has achieved many important goals and objectives in the area of food production. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is now self sufficient in many agricultural products such as wheat, broilers, eggs, milk products, vegetables and fruits [3]. This paper presents a summary of achievements for each plan highlighting the positive role of the private sector in developing agricultural sector in Saudi Arabia using the most advanced technology to cope with the difficulties facing agricultural production in a country like Saudi Arabia. 1. Introduction The modern sustainable development debate begun in 1960’s, through the ideological conflicts between those who advocated unrestrained economic growth, an essential engine of development and environmentalists and conservationists who stressed a wider range of social, political, physical and biological goals. The meaning of sustainability is dependent on whether it is based upon social, economic or ecological sustainability.

INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

  • Variability of Wintertime Surface Air Temperature Over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, 2012, 2, 307-321 http://dx.doi.org/10.4236/acs.2012.23028 Published Online July 2012 (http://www.SciRP.org/journal/acs) Variability of Wintertime Surface Air Temperature over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Hosny Mohamed Hasanean, Abdel Rahman Khalaf Al-Khalaf Department of Meteorology, Faculty of Meteorology, Environment, and Arid Land Agriculture, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, KSA Email: [email protected], [email protected] Received January 22, 2012; revised March 17, 2012; accepted April 17, 2012 ABSTRACT Variability of wintertime surface air temperature (SAT) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is studied. The study is based on time series over thirty one years in length (1978-2008). For the analysis, we use the coefficient of variability (COV) Mann-Kendal statistical test, running mean and cumulative annual mean (CAM). The coefficient of variability (COV) for wintertime SAT decreases gradually from the north to the south of KSA. The higher values for COV occur in northern and northeastern KSA; there are due to the effect of the traveling Mediterranean depressions and their inter- action with the inverted-V shape trough of the Sudan low. The relationship between COV and latitude is highly signifi- cant, while with longitude it is not significant. The Mann-Kendal statistical test illustrates that positive trends (warming) in wintertime SAT series occurs over the all stations, and that the trends are significant at middle and southern regions of KSA. Recent warming has only occurred during the last two decades at most stations. While cooling in the winter- time SAT appears for the short period of about 5 years, 1978-1983 and 1988-1992.

  • Rainfall Trends and Extremes in Saudi Arabia in Recent Decades
atmosphere Article Rainfall Trends and Extremes in Saudi Arabia in Recent Decades Mansour Almazroui Center of Excellence for Climate Change Research/Department of Meteorology, King Abdulaziz University, P. O. Box 80208, Jeddah 21589, Saudi Arabia; [email protected] Received: 24 July 2020; Accepted: 8 September 2020; Published: 10 September 2020 Abstract: The observed records of recent decades show increased economic damage associated with flash flooding in different regions of Saudi Arabia. An increase in extreme rainfall events may cause severe repercussions for the socio-economic sectors of the country. The present study investigated the observed rainfall trends and associated extremes over Saudi Arabia for the 42-year period of 1978–2019. It measured the contribution of extreme events to the total rainfall and calculated the changes to mean and extreme rainfall events over five different climate regions of Saudi Arabia. Rainfall indices were constructed by estimating the extreme characteristics associated with daily rainfall frequency and intensity. The analysis reveals that the annual rainfall is decreasing 1 (5.89 mm decade− , significant at the 90% level) over Saudi Arabia for the entire analysis period, while it increased in the most recent decade. On a monthly scale, the most significant increase 1 1 (5.44 mm decade− ) is observed in November and the largest decrease (1.20 mm decade− ) in January. The frequency of intense rainfall events is increasing for the majority of stations over Saudi Arabia, while the frequency of weak events is decreasing. More extreme rainfall events are occurring in the northwest, east, and southwest regions of Saudi Arabia.

This is done with the estimation of the annual energy sums received on surfaces with tilt angles in the range 15◦–55◦ inclined to south at 82 locations covering all Saudi Arabia. The analysis shows that tilt angles of 20◦, 25◦ and 30◦ towards south are the optimum ones depending on site. These optimum tilt angles define three distinct solar energy zones in Saudi Arabia. The variation of the energy sums in each energy zone on annual, seasonal and monthly basis is given; the analysis provides regression equations for the energy sums as function of time in each case. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of the annual global inclined solar energy in Saudi Arabia is shown in a solar map specially derived.
