A Review of Southern Iraq Herpetofauna

Salman Mazaya University College, Dhi Qar, Iraq *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract: The present review discussed the species diversity of herpetofauna in southern Iraq due to their scientific and national interests. The review includes a historical record for the herpetofaunal studies in Iraq since the earlier investigations of the 1920s and 1950s along with the more recent taxonomic trials in the following years. It appeared that, little is known about Iraqi herpetofauna, and no comprehensive checklist has been done for these species. So far, 96 species of reptiles and amphibians have been recorded from Iraq, but only a relatively small proportion of them occur in the southern marshes. The marshes act as key habitat for globally endangered species and as a potential for as yet unexplored amphibian and reptile diversity. Despite the lack of precise localities, the tree frog Hyla savignyi, the marsh frog Pelophylax ridibunda and the green toad Bufo viridis are found in the marshes. Common reptiles in the marshes include the Caspian terrapin (Clemmys caspia), the soft-shell turtle (Trionyx euphraticus), the Euphrates softshell turtle (Rafetus euphraticus), geckos of the genus Hemidactylus, two species of skinks (Trachylepis aurata and Mabuya vittata) and a variety of snakes of the genus Coluber, the spotted sand boa (Eryx jaculus), tessellated water snake (Natrix tessellata) and Gray's desert racer (Coluber ventromaculatus). More recently, a new record for the keeled gecko, Cyrtopodion scabrum and the saw-scaled viper (Echis carinatus sochureki) was reported. The IUCN Red List includes six terrestrial and six aquatic amphibian species. -

[email protected] Resum S'ha investigat la diversitat morfològica en 129 espècies de lacèrtids i la seva relació amb l'ecologia, per mitjà de mètodes comparatius, utilitzant set variables morfomètriques. La mida corporal és la variable més important, determinant un gradient entre espècies de petita i gran mida independentment evolucionades al llarg de la filogènia dels lacèrtids. Aquesta variable està forta i positivament correlacionada amb les altres, emmascarant els patrons de diversitat morfològica. Anàlisis multivariants en les variables ajustades a la mida corporal mostren una covariació negativa entre les mides relatives de la cua i les extremitats. Remarcablement, les espècies arborícoles i semiarborícoles (Takydromus i el clade africà equatorial) han aparegut dues vegades independentment durant l'evolució dels lacèrtids i es caracteritzen per cues extremadament llargues i extremitats anteriors relativament llargues en comparació a les posteriors. El llangardaix arborícola i planador Holaspis, amb la seva cua curta, constitueix l’única excepció. Un altre cas de convergència ha estat trobat en algunes espècies que es mouen dins de vegetació densa o herba (Tropidosaura, Lacerta agilis, Takydromus amurensis o Zootoca) que presenten cues llargues i extremitats curtes. Al contrari, les especies que viuen en deserts, estepes o matollars amb escassa vegetació aïllada dins grans espais oberts han desenvolupat extremitats posteriors llargues i anteriors curtes per tal d'assolir elevades velocitats i maniobrabilitat. In the trunk of the study area, Hijaz Asir highlands rises up to about 3,000 meters in the south near Abha, while at northern boundary of the area near Taif, the elevation is about 1,500 meters (refer to Figure B.1-6 and Figure B.1-7). There is a distinct coastal plain, locally known as Tihama, separated from the hills by an imposing scarp wall that runs parallel to the Red Sea along 700 km in the study area. Toward the east forms the peak of Hijaz Asir highlands, hills peter out further east to the interior, and give way to an extensive plateau covered with lava flow (Harrat) of the area, and very thin veneer rock debris and alluvium over a basalt and crystalline basement, which is frequency outcrop as knolls and low hills. -

Box 2483, Dhahran 31261, Saudi Arabia; [email protected] or [email protected]; Tel.: +966-13-860-3594; Fax: +966-13-860-3210 Received: 23 October 2018; Accepted: 21 November 2018; Published: 23 November 2018 Abstract: This study investigates the use of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs) as shading devices in hot climates, with reference to the conditions of Saudi Arabia. It used parametric numerical modelling to critically appraise the potential of eight design configurations in this regard, including vertical and horizontal shading devices with different inclination angles. The study assumed that the examined shading devices could be entirely horizontal or vertical on the three exposed facades, which is common practice in architecture. The study found that the examined configurations offered different solar and shading potentials. However, the case of horizontal BIPV shading devices with a 45◦ tilt angle received the highest amount of annual total insolation (104 kWh/m2) and offered effective window shading of 96% of the total window area on average in summer. The study concluded that, unlike the common recommendation of avoiding horizontal shading devices on eastern and western facades, it is possible in countries characterised with high solar altitudes such as Saudi Arabia to use them effectively to generate electricity and provide the required window shading. In specific cases, they can also be used to determine the likelihood of fossils to belong to the same species—under the hypothesis that all individuals of a species have the same ecological requirements. Here, using environmental modeling, we reconstructed the distribution of the Mongolian toad, Strauchbufo raddei, since the Last Glacial Maximum and thus covering the time period between the Late Pleistocene and the Holocene. We found the range of the species to have shifted over time, with the LGM population clustered around the current southern range of the species, before expanding east and north during the Pleistocene, and reaching the current range since the mid-Holocene. Finally, we determined that the ecological conditions during the life-time of the mid-Pleistocene fossils attributed to the species in Europe were too different from the one of the extant species or fossils occurring at the same period in Asia to belong to the same species. Abdel Basset Department of Meteorology, Faculty of Meteorology, Environment, and Arid Land Agriculture, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Abstract..In this study, rainfall over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is analyzed using data from available meteorological stations. The analysis of these data shows that the highest amount of rainfall occurs during the spring over the southwest, middle and east of KSA. The second highest amount of rainfall occurs during winter over the east and northeast of KSA. The season of the lowest amount of rainfall over KSA is summer, when, except in the mountainous area in the southwest region, the amount of rainfall is very small. While the horizontal distribution pattern of rainfall during autumn is somewhat similar to that during spring, the amount of rainfall in autumn is smaller than that in spring. The most significant synoptic feature appears in spring when the cold air associated with secondary Mediterranean depressions meets the moist hot southerly air associated with Red Sea trough over KSA. 1. Introduction The amount of rainfall that falls over an area is an important factor in assessing the amount of water available to meet the various demands of agriculture, industry, and other human activities. Study of the distribution of rainfall over time and space is therefore very important for the welfare of a national economy. Many applications of rainfall data are enhanced by knowledge of the actual distribution of rainfall over a specified area rather than relying on simple summary statistics. -
