Signed: ______________________ Date: ________________________ 2 Abstract This thesis will contextualise and critically explore how New Drama (Novaya Drama) has been shaped by and adapted to the political, social, and cultural landscape under Putinism (from 2000). It draws on close analysis of a variety of plays written by a burgeoning collection of playwrights from across Russia, examining how this provocative and political artistic movement has emerged as one of the most vehement critics of the Putin regime. This study argues that the manifold New Drama repertoire addresses key facets of Putinism by performing suppressed and marginalised voices in public arenas. It contends that New Drama has challenged the established, normative discourses of Putinism presented in the Russian media and by Putin himself, and demonstrates how these productions have situated themselves in the context of the nascent opposition movement in Russia. By doing so, this thesis will offer a fresh perspective on how New Drama’s precarious engagement with Putinism provokes political debate in contemporary Russia, and challenges audience members to consider their own role in Putin’s autocracy. The first chapter surveys the theatrical and political landscape in Russia at the turn of the millennium, focusing on the political and historical contexts of New Drama in Russian theatre and culture.

    60 ZuZana Poláčková; Pieter van Duin Montenegro Old and New: History, Politics, Culture, and the People The authors are focusing on how Montenegro today is coming to terms with the task of becoming a modern European nation, which implies recognition not only of democracy, the rule of law, and so forth, but also of a degree of ‘multiculturalism’, that is recognition of the existence of cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious minorities in a society that is dominated by a Slavic Orthodox majority. In his context they are analyzing the history of the struggle of the Montenegrin people against a host of foreign invaders – after they had ceased to be invaders themselves – and especially their apparently consistent refusal to accept Ottoman sovereignty over their homeland seemed to make them the most remarkable freedom fighters imaginable and led to the creation of a special Montenegrin image in Europe. This im- age of heroic stubbornness and unique martial bravery was even consciously cultivated in Western and Central Europe from the early nineteenth century onwards, as the Greeks, the Serbs, the Montenegrins and other Balkan peoples began to resist the Ottoman Empire in a more effective way and the force of Romantic nationalism began to influence the whole of Europe, from German historians to British politi- cians, and also including Montenegrin and Serbian poets themselves. And what about the present situa- tion? The committee is composed of historians of the European Union member countries who work on contemporary history. The Liaison Committee: – gathers and conveys information about work on European history after the Second World War; – advises the European Union on research projects concerning contemporary European history. Thus, the Liaison Committee was commissioned to make publicly available the archives of the Community institutions; – enables researchers to make better use of the archival sources; – promotes research meetings to get an update of work in progress and to stimulate new research: seven research conferences have been organized and their proceedings published. The Journal of European Integration History – Revue d’histoire de l’intégration européenne – Zeitschrift für Geschichte der europäischen Integration is in line with the preoccupations of the Liaison Committee. Being the first history journal to deal exclusively with the history of European Integration, the Journal offers the increasing number of young historians devoting their research to contemporary Europe, a permanent forum. Like the notable avant-garde directors before him, he rejects the tradition of mimetic representation and physical verisimilitude, and has initiated a shift to the field of verbal signification – most notably in his rediscovery of skaz – and to the cognition of aural phenomena, thus situating his work within recent academic discourse on sound. His plays and films distinguish themselves from most visual media by their long, descriptive monologues and by the use of music. Verbal and sonic elements, not physical actions or stage directions, vividly describe changes, mutations, disease, transfer states, and traumas of the characters. This article argues that Vyrypaev’s theatre and cinema engages with a 21st-century audience through its resonance with its affective and emotional registers. Ivan Vyrypaev is one of the leading playwrights of Russian New Drama (Novaia drama), a vibrant movement that has gained visibility through numerous artists’ and writers’ festivals since the late 1990s, including Liubimovka, New Drama and Golden Mask festivals, but also through theatres across Russia, Europe and the U.S.

It is no accident that the mul- Ctitude of manifestoes and programmatic articles, slogans, and appeals always used terms like “human being,” “world,” and “universe”—although they did so without defining them more precisely or concretely, or with even the slightest mention of a particular territory where the art was expected to carry out its transformative mission. Nevertheless, some specificity was implied, although directed at features of a different order and expressed, as a rule, by the adjective “new”: new person, new world, new art. However, theory is one thing and practice is something else altogether. In reality, constructivism, especially constructivism in the theater, proved to be an art that was powerfully rooted in tradition— above all, in national tradition. The art historian Nikolai Punin, reflecting on Russian art of the 1910s, perceptively noted: “Thus indeed…cubism, which had appeared to be an international art form of a new generation, was broken by national, and then by individual traditions.”1 The same may be said of Ukrainian constructivist theater design, albeit tempering the verb a bit: perhaps not broken, but rather colored, reorganized, and transformed by the traditions of Ukrainian art.
