AC Milan welcome holders FC Barcelona to for the first leg of a UEFA Champions League quarter-final pitting together two of the continent's heavyweights – with the Italian side hoping for a case of third time lucky. • The Rossoneri twice failed to get the better of Barcelona when the clubs met in the group stage of this season's competition. Josep Guardiola's men took four points from the two encounters – including a 3-2 win in Milan – to finish top of their section. • Competing at this stage for the first time since 2006/07, when they went on to lift the trophy, seven-time winners Milan can take heart from the fact they have never lost a home quarter-final tie in the European Cup. That is unlikely to daunt Barcelona, now champions four times and seeking a fifth successive semi-final appearance – which would equal the record set by their arch-rivals Real Madrid CF from 1956 to 1960. Previous meetings • There was no shortage of goals and excitement when the clubs met in Milan on matchday five. Barcelona prevailed 3-2 at San Siro on 23 November to consign their hosts to the runners-up berth in Group H. Xavi Hernández hit a 63rd-minute winner after Zlatan Ibrahimović (20) and Kevin-Prince Boateng (54) had cancelled out leads given Barcelona by Mark van Bommel's own goal (14) and 's penalty (31). • The teams' matchday one meeting on 13 September finished 2-2, Thiago Silva scoring a 92nd-minute equaliser for Milan after Pedro Rodríguez (36) and (50) had overturned Pato's goal in the first minute. • The sides have squared off 13 times overall in UEFA competition, with Barcelona recording five wins to Milan's four and scoring 19 goals to the Italian side's 18. Milan's record in six home outings against Barcelona reads W2 D1 L3. • Barcelona have won on their last two visits to San Siro to face Milan, also beating the outfit 1-0 in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg thanks to Ludovic Giuly's goal. • Van Bommel and Maxi López, now Milan players, played for Barcelona that night. The full lineups for that match on 18 April 2006 were: Milan: Dida, Kaladze, Nesta, Stam ( 77), Serginho, Gattuso (Ambrosini 74), Seedorf, Pirlo (Maldini 67), Kaká, Shevchenko, Gilardino. Barcelona: Valdés, Oleguer (Motta 75), Márquez, Puyol, Van Bronckhorst, Edmílson, Van Bommel, Iniesta, Giuly (Belletti 70), Eto'o, Ronaldinho (Maxi López 89). • Milan's last victory against Barcelona came on 20 October 2004 in the UEFA Champions League group stage, Andriy Shevchenko scoring the only goal. Gennaro Gattuso, Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf and substitute Massimo Ambrosini played for the Rossoneri with Xavi, Carles Puyol, Víctor Valdés and substitute Andrés Iniesta lining up for the Blaugrana. Ambrosini and Gattuso are also survivors of Milan's only previous win at the Camp Nou, 2-0 on 26 September 2000. • The clubs' most high-profile encounter was the 1994 UEFA Champions League final in Athens, which Milan won 4-0. Milan also prevailed when the pair met in the 1989 UEFA Super Cup, winning 1-0 at home after a 1-1 away draw. Match background • Milan have a formidable home record in European Cup quarter-finals. This is their 15th appearance in the last eight and they have yet to lose a home leg at this stage, with ten wins and four draws. • That record will be put to the test against a Barcelona side who have won their last six away fixtures in the UEFA Champions League – and scored 15 goals in four games on the road in this term's competition. • Overall, Milan have won 11 and lost three of the 14 quarter-finals they have contested. Their most recent victory was against FC Bayern München in 2006/07, the season of their last European triumph. The most recent defeat came against Spain's RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2003/04 when they famously surrendered a 4-1 first-leg advantage in Galicia. They had no quarter-final matches in 1992/93 and 1993/94, because of the evolving format of the newly established UEFA Champions League. • Barcelona have won the same number of quarter-finals as Milan, with 11 wins and two defeats from 13 appearances at this stage. Like Milan, they had no quarter-finals to negotiate when reaching the final in 1991/92 and 1993/94. • Barcelona have won their last five quarter-finals in the UEFA Champions League – four in a row between 2008 and 2011 – and another in 2006. Their last defeat at this stage was against another Italian team, Juventus, in 2002/03. They last lost the away leg of a quarter-final tie at Panathinaikos FC in 2001/02.

• Aside from their defeat by Barcelona, Milan have done well at home in Europe this term, their other three fixtures all yielding victories with a combined score of 8-0. • The Rossoneri have won none of their last four home games against Liga opposition but their overall record against visitors from Spain is W11 D4 L6. • Barcelona's overall record away to Italian sides is W5 D6 L5. • The Spanish club won their first European Cup by beating Italy's UC Sampdoria 1-0 in the final 20 years ago in May. Team ties • As a player, Barcelona coach Guardiola had spells at and AS Roma after leaving the Camp Nou. He was a team-mate of Daniele Bonera at Brescia in 2001/02. On 10 May 2003 he appeared in Brescia's 1-0 home win against a Milan side including Ambrosini with Christian Abbiati on the bench. • Gianluca Zambrotta (2006-08), Ibrahimović (2009-10), Van Bommel (2005-06) and the on-loan López (2005-07) have all had spells at Barcelona. Van Bommel won the UEFA Champions League with the Azulgrana in 2006. López scored his only goal in UEFA club competition on his first appearance in the UEFA Champions League for Barcelona against Chelsea FC in 2005. • Abbiati (Club Atlético de Madrid), Seedorf and Robinho (both Real Madrid) have played in Spain. • Barcelona Thiago Alcántara was born in San Pietro Vernotico in Italy. His father, Mazinho, played in Serie A for US Lecce and ACF Fiorentina. • and Aquilani played together at Liverpool FC in 2009/10. Mascherano was in the Liverpool team beaten 2-1 by Milan in the 2007 UEFA Champions League final. • Cesc Fàbregas and Mathieu Flamini were Arsenal FC team-mates from 2004 to 2008. Fàbregas scored at San Siro in a 2-0 win at Milan in the 2007/08 round of 16 second leg, with Flamini also featuring. • Iniesta scored the extra-time winner as Spain overcame a Netherlands side featuring Van Bommel in the 2010 FIFA World Cup final. • Villa and Fàbregas converted from the spot as Spain defeated Italy 4-2 on penalties in the UEFA EURO 2008 quarter-finals. Ambrosini, Zambrotta and Aquilani appeared for Italy. • Aquilani got the winner as Italy overcame Spain 2-1 in a friendly last August in which Thiago made his senior Spain debut. • The two clubs' respective Italy and Spain contingents will meet again in the summer when their national teams face off in the group stage at UEFA EURO 2012 – in their opening game in Gdansk on 10 June. • Éric Abidal was sent off when an Italy team including Zambrotta, Gattuso and substitute Aquilani overcame France 2-0 in the UEFA EURO 2008 group stage. • Alexis Sánchez scored in Udinese Calcio's 4-4 draw at Milan last season. That was his sole goal in seven league and cup meetings with Milan during three years in Udine which brought three wins, two draws and two defeats. • The second leg takes place at the Camp Nou on 3 April, with the winning team advancing to a semi-final against the victors of the SL Benfica v Chelsea quarter-final.

AC Milan: Massimiliano Allegri Date of birth: 11 August 1967 Nationality: Italian Playing career: UC Cuoiopelli, AS Livorno Calcio (twice), Pisa Calcio, AC Pavia, Pescara Calcio (twice), , AC Perugia, Calcio Padova, SSC Napoli, AC Pistoiese, Aglianese Calcio 1923 Coaching career: Aglianese Calcio 1923, SPAL 1907, US Grosseto FC, US Sassuolo Calcio, Cagliari Calcio, AC Milan • A creative attacking midfielder, Allegri started out in his native Tuscany with Cuoiopelli and then Livorno, his hometown club. First appeared in Serie A for Pisa against Milan in 1988/89 but played only twice that season before heading back to Livorno. • Returned to Serie A after helping Pescara win promotion in 1992. The following term he scored 12 goals under Giovanni Galeone, the coach Allegri still considers his mentor. After leaving Pescara in 1993, had spells at Cagliari, Perugia, Padova and Napoli before hanging up his boots back in Tuscany with fourth division Aglianese in 2003. • Moved straight into coaching at Aglianese, prior to taking charge at SPAL and Grosseto. In November 2008 he won the Panchina d'Oro (golden bench) as the third division's best coach having led Sassuolo to promotion. • Had earlier been appointed by Cagliari whom he led to ninth place in 2009, winning the Panchina d'Oro again, this time as Serie A's best coach. Cagliari started the following season superbly but a bad run of results prompted Allegri's dismissal on 13 April 2010 – although he had already done enough to earn a two-year contract at Milan. • Allegri's first season at San Siro ended with his new club winning the Scudetto for the first time since 2004. In January 2012 he extended his contract until June 2014.

Barcelona followed up with victories in the Spanish and UEFA Super Cups at the start of 2009/10, going on to win the FIFA Club World Cup and retain the Liga title. • Steered the Azulgrana to a third successive Liga crown and their fourth European Cup in 2010/11.

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know? • Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 28 occasions, including SL Benfica, APOEL FC, FC Bayern München and Chelsea FC in this season's round of 16, although only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home. • Twenty-one ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg. • In all, 19 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three round of 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. • Eleven ties have gone to penalties, including the game between APOEL FC and Olympique Lyonnais in the 2011/12 round of 16. Five of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008. The first two-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. • There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16. • FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 first knockout round, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two games also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie. • FC Bayern München's 7-0 second-leg defeat of FC Basel 1893 in the 2012/12 round of 16 is the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match. • The biggest European Cup quarter-final victory was Real Madrid CF's 8-0 first-leg defeat of Sevilla FC in 1957/58. • Manchester United FC's 7-1 win against AS Roma in 2006/07 is the biggest victory in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final match. FC Barcelona have twice won 5-1, against Chelsea FC after extra time (1999/2000) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2010/11), while there have been four 4-0 victories, most recently Real Madrid CF's defeat of Tottenham Hotspur FC last season. • Chelsea FC-Liverpool FC in 2008/09 featured 12 goals over the two legs, a quarter-final record. • Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF 1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times. • Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) and José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United FC lost the 2011 final in London. Five teams won Champion Clubs' Cup finals on home soil: Real Madrid CF (1957), FC Internazionale Milano (1965), Manchester United FC (1968), AFC Ajax (1972) and Liverpool FC (1978), while Stade de Reims Champagne (1956), AS Roma (1984) and FC Barcelona (1986) all lost finals in their own country. UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a UEFA Champions League match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight this season. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having been aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six of the 2007/08 edition. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 148 days, in Manchester United's 2-0 win at FC Schalke 04 on 26 April 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute.
