HALF LIGHT PRESS The Lost Album (2015) Three Imaginary Girls Earlier this summer, I haphazardly found myself observing Half Light during their CD release party that took place at The Comet Tavern in Seattle. At the time I didn’t know anything about them, but I was certainly impressed by the atmospheric and reverb-laden sound that emanated from their amplifiers. Almost two months later, I acquired a copy of their debut album, entitled Sleep More Take More Drugs Do Whatever We Want, and this disc does not disappoint. In fact, it is the best release that I have heard by a Seattle band this year. The members of Half Light are big fans of acoustic and electric based space rock such as Mojave 3, Slowdive, Mazzy Star and The Church. Impressively, they managed to convince Tim Powles, drummer of The Church, to produce this recording. His wonderful production style that weaves a hazy, shimmering cacophony suits this band perfectly as they balance the line between beautiful and chaotic. In Powles’ own words, Half Light "certainly has what many bands dream of, a sound." A unique and memorable sound collage is what they offer their listeners, and the nine songs featured on Sleep More are all one needs to be convinced of this point. Vocalist Dayna Loeffler comes across with a soft and bashful voice that has a slightly raspy quality, which sounds akin to Allison Shaw of Cranes at times. On the track "Barbs," these innate tones are augmented with a heavy reverb production effect. The guitars are also drenched in delay and generous amounts of echo, making the whole thing take on a truly drugged-out in space effect.

By Anthony Yung ArtReview Asia caught up with Lee Kit in Venice, where he was monitoring the reconstruction of a building – soon to be the site of the Hong Kong Pavilion – opposite the entrance of the Arsenale. His solo exhibition You (you). will open here in less than two months. During the past year, Lee’s experiences of participating in art fairs and exhibitions all over the world – from solo shows in Beijing, Hong Kong, Palermo and Tapei, to group shows at the New Museum and MoMA in New York – have transformed his work methods and expanded the dimensions of his creative practice. Oddly enough, shortly before being invited to represent Hong Kong at the Venice Biennale, he moved to Taipei; so we decided, under the circumstances, that the best approach would be to invite one of his old Hong Kong friends to catch up with him on recent events. Lee’s artistic journey began when he started by painting checked patterns onto cloths, then using these ‘paintings’ in his daily life as tablecloths, curtains or picnic sheets. He washed the cloths, he wiped his mouth with them and in 2004 he used one of them as a ‘flag’ in Hong Kong’s annual 1 July protests (held each year since the 1997 handover, in recent years to symbolise a demand for general freedoms).

  • The Music Column That Wouldn't Die: New Album Reviews
The Music Column That Wouldn’t Die: New Album Reviews. I told myself I was over this, that I had retired from the world of music reviews. I had moved onto bigger and better things (mostly staring at the wall and wondering why nobody calls me anymore). Yet here I am, a mere few months after burning my bridges, giving up on new music and making a world of enemies, back in the game. Did I miss the constant abuse, the being paid in soiled pennies and the lack of recognition which writing this unremembered column entailed? Funnily enough, I did! It was listening to the post punk genius of the new Dry Cleaning record that did it. I thought to myself ‘someone has to take it upon themselves to tell the world just how good this album is’. After a moment of quiet reflection where I drank a glass of lukewarm Ribena to calm the nerves, I decided that that person may as well be me. By JOHN BITTLES So, here we are. Bittles’ Magazine, like some particularly bothersome zombie with a bad haircut and worse breath, has been reborn. And what a re-introduction we have! In this month’s reviews there is the art heavy punk funk strut of Squid, the melancholy dream pop of White Flowers, Thomas Fehlmann’s rich ambiance, the return of living legends The Coral, the skewed pop of Dntel, and Dry Cleaning of course. So, tell all your friends, phone the tabloids, and let us begin… New Long Leg by Dry Cleaning.

  • Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists.

Dix ans plus tard, Brian est certain d’avoir été enlevé par des extraterrestres et pense que seul Neil Mc Cormick pourrait avoir la clé de l’énigme. Proposing a third term that operates beyond the dichotomy of high culture and mass culture and yet offers a fresh approach to both, these essays address a multitude of different topics that can all be classified as unpopular culture. From David Foster Wallace and Ernest Hemingway to Zane Grey, from Christian rock and country to clack cetal, from Steven Seagal to Genesis (Breyer) P-Orridge, from K-pop to The Real Housewives, from natural disasters to 9/11, from thesis hatements to professional sports, these essays find the unpopular across media and genres, and they analyze the politics and the aesthetics of an unpopular culture (and the unpopular in culture) that has not been duly recognized as such by the theories and methods of cultural studies. • The Alien Disko: an Interview with Markus Acher
Welcome To The Alien Disko: An Interview With Markus Acher Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world There comes a time in everyone’s life when you find yourself standing in a muddy field with a plastic glass of warm ‚beer‘, straining to hear the muffled soundsystem in the far off distance thinking to yourself, »I’d rather be home watching EastEnders«. By JOHN BITTLES With shoddy promoters, phoned-in performances, crazed space cadets wanting to lick your face, and the usual array of drunken louts, going to a musical gathering these days can be as much fun as watching the new Justice League movie. With an eclectic line-up, an inviting venue, and organisers who seem to love music rather than the contents of your bank account, Alien Disko II is the type of event capable of getting us all excited about festivals again. Founded by brothers Markus and Micha Acher of the band The Notwist, the festival runs on the 15th and 16th of December and will be held at Munich’s lush theatre space Kammerspiele. Full details can be found here. Last year’s inaugural event (which included performances from Ras G, Cala Del Forno, Tenniscoats, Joanna Gruesome, etc) proved to be a huge success, so it made sense to repeat the feat in 2017. Spread over three rooms, this year’s line-up is wonderfully diverse, with intergalactic hip hop sitting next to Congolese rhythms, glitchy electronica, and more. Acts including Shabazz Palaces, Amiina, Ms. John Soda, Konono N.1, Michaela Melián and The Notwist have all been confirmed, ensuring that, for anyone in or near Munich, the purchase of a ticket is a must.
