Bishop Robert Barron: Many years ago, I read an article by a very prominent German theologian who argued against monks and monasticism, on the grounds that neither is mentioned anywhere in the Gospels. I recall thinking at the time: “Well, professors of theology aren’t mentioned in the Gospels either!” In point of fact, there are many forms of ecclesial life that have emerged as developments of what was present, in seminal form, in the teaching, ministry, and of Jesus. For instance, Catholic hospitals are grounded in the Lord’s ministry of healing; Catholic schools and universities have evolved from Jesus’ practice of teaching; Catholic worship in all of its variety and completely finds its origin in the intense prayer life of Jesus and especially in the gestures and words of the Last Supper. And in answer to the German theologian’s puzzlement, I would say that the monastic manner of life is anticipated in the moment, described in Mark’s Gospel, when Jesus invites his disciples to come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while. That there is an active, apostolic dimension to the Church is anticipated in the pastoral work of the followers of Jesus, but that there is a properly contemplative dimension to the Church as well is signaled by this invitation of the Lord to enter into the desert. The “rest” referred to here is not simply about the recuperation of strength; it has to do with the savor- ing of the truth and beauty of the Lord. St. taught that the will seeks the absent good and “rests” in the good that it possesses. Up and down the Christians centuries, monks and nuns have followed Jesus into deserted places that they might savor him fully. SCRIPTURE & REFLECTION (Magnificat, July 2021)
