Communion on the Tongue The Diocese of Joliet has followed the lead of the Archdiocese of Chicago in allowing those who wish to receive communion on the tongue to do so if they follow certain guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety. Therefore, we will follow these guidelines:

Weekday Masses During weekday Masses beginning Thursday morning, we ask all communicants wishing to receive on the tongue come forward after all those receiving in the hand in the center aisle. When they approach the priest, they should remove their mask. The priest will sanitize his hands before and after each particular communicant receiving on the tongue. Having received, the individual should step to the side on the tape marking on the floor and return their mask to their face.

Sunday Masses (including 5 pm on Saturday evening) We will have two individual distributing communion one minister standing in the center at the normal location and will distribute communion to those wishing to receive in the hand. Another minister will stand to the right side of the other minister, at least six feet away, and will distribute only to those receiving on the tongue. The minister distributing on the tongue will sanitize his/her hands before and ter every communicant. The communicant should remove their mask just prior to receiving the host and then return the mask as soon as they have received communion. All communicants should remember that they should not walk behind or near other communicants but always keep 6 feet distance. Please notice that communion on the tongue will not be offered in the PLC.

May Almighty God bless you and keep you.

Prayers.

In Christ,

Fr. Thomas Milota

Adult Faith Formation Our Path to Sainthood… Venerable Bishop Alphonse Gallegos, O.A.R. “Bishop of the Barrios” - “Love One Another” “During his nearly 10 years in Sacramento, Bishop [Alphonse] Gallegos was a forceful advocate for the concerns of Hispanics. He marched in solidarity with the United Farm Workers, opposed cuts in bilingual education, and worked with inner-city gangs up and down the state. He worked tirelessly to steer Hispanic youth toward education and away from drugs and crime” (Gonzalez). “Alphonse Gallegos and his twin brother Eloy were born on February 20, 1931 in Albuquerque, … [He was one of] 11 children… The Gallegos children were fourth generation Mexican American. The family moved to Los Angeles and lived in the Watts area where many Hispanic families lived” (Boll). “Gallegos heard the call, ‘Follow Me,’ and followed Jesus, proclaiming the good news to all, listening to His voice in daily prayer and Scripture reading and was faithful to that call until the end of his life, bringing love, joy, and comfort to others. He did that by living the commandment of Jesus, ‘Love one another’ — the words of his episcopal motto” (Gonzalez) In 1950, he entered the Order of Augustinian Recollects in Kansas City, Kansas. He was ordained a priest in 1958. “In 1972, his order assigned him to serve as pastor of San Miguel Church in Watts, the same parish where he’d been an altar server. Even more so than today, the situation in Watts was rife with poverty, gang violence, and unemployment” (Gonzalez). “He would walk the dangerous streets at night in search of the “lost sheep,” the youth. He believed that education was key in order to stop the vicious cycle of poverty and violence in Watts. In 1978, he was appointed pastor of Cristo Rey Church in the Atwater Village area of Los Angeles. Gallegos liked to walk those streets, too, greeting and encouraging his community, visiting families in their homes and eating whatever they put before him” (Gonzalez). “Gallegos’ work in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles did not go unnoticed. In 1979 he was appointed as the first director of Hispanic Affairs for ’s bishops... Gallegos was consecrated auxiliary bishop of Sacramento Nov. 4, 1981… Often called “the bishop of the barrio,” Gallegos was a true missionary, a contemplative in action who had zeal for souls and was a living witness of Christ.” (Gonzalez).
