This annual event is a special time for parishes in the U.S. to foster a culture of vocations for the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life. National Vocations Awareness Week, sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations, is designed to help promote vocation awareness and to encourage young people to ask the question: "To what vocation in life is God calling me?" Parish and school communities across the nation are encouraged to include, during the first week in November, prayer and special activities that focus on vocation awareness. “Prayer for vocations is the responsibility of the entire Church. Often times we think that vocations will come from some- where else, and yet God invites us to consider that he is raising up vocations to priesthood, consecrated life, and the perma- nent diaconate from within our own communities, even our own families” said Bishop Michael F. Burbidge, bishop designate of Arlington, Va., chairman of the U.S. bishops' Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations. "Our willingness to in- vite those within our own communities and families to consider that God may be calling them to Priesthood or consecrated life will bear abundant fruit in the Church and bring great joy and happiness to those called. We want what is best for our children; even more so does God desire their happiness.” More information and resources for National Vocations Awareness Week, including a prayer card, suggested prayers of the faith- ful and bulletin-ready quotes are available online at: http://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/vocations/national-vocation- awareness-week.cfm. POPE ADVANCES SAINTHOOD CAUSE FOR BISHOP ALPHONSE GALLEGOS, DECLARED VENERABLE Pope Francis has advanced the sainthood cause of the late Bishop Alphonse Gallegos, who served as auxiliary bishop of Sacramento from 1981 until his death in an auto accident near Yuba City in 1991. He was particularly known for his ministry to farm workers and the poor and marginalized. In an audience with Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation of the Causes of Saints, Pope Francis signed a de- cree on July 9 recognizing the heroic virtues of Bishop Gallegos, who will now be known as Venerable Alphonse Gallegos. It is the latest step in his beatification cause, which was initiated 10 years ago. Kevin Eckery, spokesman for the Diocese of Sacramento, noted: “Bishop Gallegos touched so many people with his ministry. We are gratified to see his cause moving forward and will provide the (cause’s) postulator with any assistance he needs to complete his work.” Bishop Gallegos was known as the “bishop of the barrio” because of his work with the marginalized and the “lowrider” bishop because of his support for members of local modified-car clubs. He was particularly concerned about the poor, un- catechized young people, migrants and other people who lacked support from the community, and often spent his summer vacations living with farm workers in the Central Valley. Bishop Jaime Soto will preside at a Mass of thanksgiving for Venerable Alphonse Gallegos on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 1:30 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in downtown Sacramento. Prior to the Mass, there will be a brief wreath-laying ceremony at Bishop Gallegos' statue at 1:15 p.m. The statue is located on 11th Street, between K and L Streets. Catholic Saints Getty Images Introduction All Christians are called to be saints. Saints are persons in heaven (officially canonized or not), who lived heroically virtuous lives, offered their life for others, or were martyred for the faith, and who are worthy of imitation. In official Church procedures, there are three steps to sainthood: a candidate becomes "Venerable," then "Blessed" and then "Saint." Venerable is the title given to a deceased person recognized formally by the pope as having lived a heroically virtuous life or offered their life. To be beatified and recognized as a Blessed, one miracle acquired through the candidate's intercession is required in addition to recognition of heroic virtue or offering of life. Canonization requires a second miracle after beatification. The pope may waive these requirements. A miracle is not required prior to a martyr's beatification, but one is required before canonization. Canonization – the formal process by which Key Terms the Church declares a person to be a saint and Beatification– the second stage in the process worthy of universal veneration. of proclaiming a person a saint; occurs after a diocese or eparchy and the Congregation for Congregation for the Causes of Saints – a the Causes of Saints has conducted a rigorous department of the Roman Curia, established investigation into the person's life and writings originally as the Congregation of Rites by Pope to determine whether he or she demonstrates Sixtus V in 1588. Mission Statement We Worship ~ We Teach ~ We Care 5112 Pocono Crest Road Mass Schedule: PO Box O Pocono Pines, PA 18350 Saturday 4:00 pm 570-646-6424 Sunday 8:30 am & 10:30 am May 16, 2021 GOSPEL MEDITATION God remains where love remains. When a 7th Sunday of Easter believer realizes without doubt that God is love, it is a powerful moment. Being able to place our resurrection trust in this fundamental truth allows us to experience God’s presence in all of our experiences: the good and the bad, positive and negative, life enriching and destructive events we encounter. It is no wonder that St. Paul so accurately tells us that it is love that endures all things and lasts. How can God not endure or ever fade away? Because he is God, Jesus also guarded and protected his disciples as the endearing shepherd who always had their best in- terest at heart. If we become too immersed in the world, we Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed lose touch with these deeper realities. We can saying: “As you sent me into the world, so I become so preoccupied with preserving what we have created or think that we need, forgetting that sent them into the world. And I consecrate it is not building our city that really matters, but myself for them, so that they also may be God’s. Jesus clearly did not belong to the world consecrated in truth.” -Jn 17:18-19 and, by virtue of his resurrection, he tries to get us to understand that we do not either.

Saint Helen youth Ministry (6th-12th Grade) // Family Ministry Spring Session 4 // The Barrio Bishop and the Sing Goal The goal of this session is to challenge middle schoolers with the lives of saints and holy men and women who were reformers within society and to encourage them to be empowered by the Holy Spirit to work for justice and truth in their world. Main Ideas • Jesus was not a “nice teacher,” but called out injustice, spoke the truth, and continually offered mercy for hearts that repented. To be a follower of Jesus is to do the same. • Many saints and holy men and women including Venerable Alphonse Gallegos and Servant of God Sr. Thea Bowman became influential social reformers and, like Jesus, called people toward justice, truth, and proclaimed Christ’s mercy for repentant hearts. • Before we seek to oppose injustice in our world, we must first conform our hearts to Christ and seek mercy for the places we fall short. Scripture Catechism Genesis 1:27 1931-1933 1 Corinthians 12:21-26 Mathew 5:44, 19:21 Engage Opening Prayer Invite your teen to open in prayer! The prayer doesn’t have to be long or arduous, just intentional. It is okay if it’s just an Our Father or a Glory Be – most teens just feel uncomfortable praying out loud because it’s not something they’re used to. The more often they hear you pray aloud and pray aloud themselves, the more comfortable they become in it. Reflect Jesus and Justice Question: Who is the nicest person you know? That makes them so nice? When we think of nice people, we often think of those who are kind, easy-going, easy to get along with.

Having been the oldest living bishop in the United States, he experienced many of the great achievements as well as tragedies in the Catholic Church and world. My earliest memories of Bishop Quinn were while I had already entered the seminary. Although he was bishop at the time of my confirmation, I was confirmed by Venerable Alphonse Gallegos, Auxiliary Bishop of the diocese at that time. Yet, even I, in my innocent (or rather ignorant) twenties, was well aware of the reputation of Bishop Quinn. Well known for his humility and out- reach to the poor, he was an encouraging presence for my initial interest and continued path towards priestly ordination. I can ’t say I was close to Bishop Quinn. I wanted to be. I admired him greatly for his wisdom and sense of humor, but I ’ve never been a person to press my- self onto the lives of others and the Spirit did not lead us to intersect often. It was always an honor to have him speak to me, but he was a popular personality who de- served his space. I ’ve always felt, however, that he knew me far better than I knew him.
