Esta compilación sigue el criterio utilizado en años anteriores, de agrupar la obra en tres secciones. 1. Biobibliografías, que contiene la cronología de las personalidades cubanas fallecidas en el año 1987, que consideramos de sumo in­ terés para los estudiosos de la cultura cubana. 2. Indice analítico, donde se localiza por autor, título o materia cual­ quier información deseada. 3. Indice de colecciones, series y editoriales, para ampliar la investi­ gación y garantizar el proceso de búsqueda de una manera más ágil. 4 BIOBIBLIOGRAFIAS JUAN JIMENEZ PASTRANA (1903-1987) 1903 Nace en La Habana el 24 de noviembre. Cursa las primeras letras hasta el 69 grado en la Escuela Pública No. 21. 1916 Termina la enseñanza primaria y aprende el oficio de carpin­ tero ebanista para ayudar al padre en el mantenimiento de su familia, que atraviesa por una precaria situación económica. Con orgullo, gana el sustento con sus propias manos y se inte­ gra a la clase obrera, en cuyas filas milita hasta el final de su vida 1923- Con grandes esfuerzos ingresa en la Escuela Normal para Maes- 1927 tros de La Habana obteniendo el anhelado título. En esta etapa participa con sus compañeros de aula en los actos de protesta estudiantil efectuados en el Patio de los Laureles de la Univer­ sidad de La Habana, convocados y presididos por Julio Antonio Mella para reclamar la Reforma Universitaria 1929 Obtiene plaza de maestro por oposición y es director general 1960 de escuelas públicas en La Habana 1935 Toma parte activa en el sector magisterial habanero durante la huelga de marzo 1937 Recibe el título de Doctor en Pedagogía 1937- Realiza estudios en las carreras de Leyes y de Filosofía y Le- 1939 tras, que no termina 1939 Pronto se evidencia su talento para la historia y recibe el Pre­ mio Extraordinario “ Elias Entralgo” de Historia de Cuba en la Universidad de La Habana 1940 Participa en las batallas político-sociales inherentes a esta etapa convulsa de nuestra historia y el Partido Unión Revolu­ cionaria Comunista lo postula como candidato a Representante por la provincia de La Habana 1955 Forma parte del Ejecutivo del Colegio Municipal de Pedagogos de La Habana, y combate junto a sus compañeros en abierta oposición revolucionaria a los miembros del Ejecutivo Nacional, vendidos a la dictadura batistiana 1959 Al triunfo de la Revolución se encuentra enfrascado en las lu­ chas por el beneficio del magisterio cubano 12 INDICE ACUMULATIVO BIBLIOGRAFIA CUBANA 1987 1960- Comisionado por el Ministerio de Educación Para la revisión 1961 ideológica de los libros de texto 1962- Integra la Comisión Ministerial que tiene a su cargo la redac- 1963 ción del informe sobre la Campaña Nacional de Alfabetización 1963- Director del Dep. de Estudios Socioeconómicos de la Facultad 1969 Obrero-Campesina "Julio Antonio Mella” de la Universidad de La Habana 1970- Se acoge a los derechos de la jubilación, pero prosigue con responsable entusiasmo su quehacer historiográfico; a partir de esta fecha se editan algunos de los más importantes traba­ jos de su obra histórica, dispersa también en distintos perió­ dicos y revistas. Dicta conferencias sobre asuntos históricos y pedagógicos en diferentes centros culturales del país. (Biografía) Se encuentra en proceso editorial el título: Guamá (2a ed.) BLAS ROCA (1908-1987) 1908 Nace en Manzanillo el 24 de julio, de humilde extracción obre­ ra. Sólo puede cursar la enseñanza primaria hasta el cuarto grado, aunque continúa estudiando mientras realiza numerosos oficios para ayudar económicamente a su familia que es muy pobre y numerosa 1924 Su primer maestro le tiene mucha estima y lo ayuda a prepa­ rarse para aprobar los exámenes que lo habilitan para el magis­ terio. Ejerce como sustituto durante algunos meses en Media Luna y Manzanillo pero tiene que cesar en su trabajo por falta de recomendación política y aprende el oficio de zapatero al que se dedica en lo adelante Incorporado a la producción con el aprendizaje del oficio, sufre la opresión y la explotación de la sociedad burguesa, lo que contribuyó a formar su temple de acero y su rebeldía contra las injusticias 1928 Dirige el Gremio de Zapateros en Manzanillo. Toma parte acti­ va en las huelgas de zapateros y estibadores y su lucha contra la patronal alcanza niveles de gran intensidad lo que le hace guardar prisión 1929 Se destaca en las luchas sindicales y en este año ingresa en el Primer Partido Comunista de Cuba Elegido Secretario General del Sindicato de Zapateros de Man­ zanillo 1930 Atendiendo a sus extraordinarias condiciones, ocupa el cargo de Secretario General del Comité Municipal del Partido en Man­ zanillo y también Secretario General de la Federación Obrera. Bajo la acusación de dirigir movimientos huelguísticos de los trabajadores portuarios y de la industria del calzado, lo traen preso a La Habana y lo internan en el Castillo del Príncipe 1932 Durante la dictadura machadista es detenido nuevamente y en­ carcelado un año en esta ocasión en Guantánamo. En noviembre de este año, imposibilitado Martínez Villena por su precaria salud de dirigir el Partido, su Comité Central deci­ de trasladar a Blas Roca para la capital y lo designa Secretario General, cargo que se ratifica definitivamente en el II Congre­ so del Partido realizado en abril de 1934 y que ocupa en las etapas de la vanguardia marxista-leninista hasta su disolución en 1961 al formarse las ORI (Organizaciones Revolucionarias Integradas). Atiende además el órgano oficial del Partido, el periódico Bandera Roja 1935 Encabeza la delegación de nuestro Primer Partido Marxista-Le- ninista al histórico Vil Congreso de la Internacional Comunista celebrado en Moscú y allí es elegido miembro del Comité Eje­ cutivo de esa organización 1936 A su regreso, guarda prisión nuevamente 1939 En las elecciones resulta electo Delegado a la Asamblea Cons­ tituyente. En los debates de dicha Asamblea pone en evidencia su estatura como ideólogo de la clase obrera y defensor de los intereses de los trabajadores y de todo el pueblo 1940 Desde esta fecha

    “Manteca”--Dizzy Gillespie Big Band with Chano Pozo (1947) Added to the National Registry: 2004 Essay by Raul Fernandez (guest post)* Chano Pozo and Dizzy Gillespie The jazz standard “Manteca” was the product of a collaboration between Charles Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie and Cuban musician, composer and dancer Luciano (Chano) Pozo González. “Manteca” signified one of the beginning steps on the road from Afro-Cuban rhythms to Latin jazz. In the years leading up to 1940, Cuban rhythms and melodies migrated to the United States, while, simultaneously, the sounds of American jazz traveled across the Caribbean. Musicians and audiences acquainted themselves with each other’s musical idioms as they played and danced to rhumba, conga and big-band swing. Anthropologist, dancer and choreographer Katherine Dunham was instrumental in bringing several Cuban drummers who performed in authentic style with her dance troupe in New York in the mid-1940s. All this laid the groundwork for the fusion of jazz and Afro-Cuban music that was to occur in New York City in the 1940s, which brought in a completely new musical form to enthusiastic audiences of all kinds. This coming fusion was “in the air.” A brash young group of artists looking to push jazz in fresh directions began to experiment with a radical new approach. Often playing at speeds beyond the skills of most performers, the new sound, “bebop,” became the proving ground for young New York jazz musicians. One of them, “Dizzy” Gillespie, was destined to become a major force in the development of Afro-Cuban or Latin jazz. Gillespie was interested in the complex rhythms played by Cuban orchestras in New York, in particular the hot dance mixture of jazz with Afro-Cuban sounds presented in the early 1940s by Mario Bauzá and Machito’s Afrocubans Orchestra which included singer Graciela’s balmy ballads.

    ABOUT “MONGO” SANTAMARÍA The late 1940's saw the birth of Latin Jazz in New York City, performed first by its pioneers Machito, Mario Bauza, Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo. Ramón "Mongo" Santamaría Rodríguez emerged from the next wave of Latin Jazz that was led by vibraphonist Cal Tjader and timbalero Tito Puente. When Mongo finally became a bandleader himself, his impact was profound on both the Latin music world and the jazz world. His musical career was long, ushering in styles from religious Afro-Cuban drumming and charanga-jazz to pop- jazz, soul-jazz, Latin funk and eventually straight ahead Latin jazz. From Mongo’s bands emerged some young players who eventually became jazz legends, such as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Hubert Laws. I had a chance to meet Mongo a few times during the years which culminated in a wonderful hangout on my radio show Jazz on the Latin Side, broadcast on KJazz 88.1 FM in Los Angeles) where he shared great stories and he also sat in with the live band that I had on the air that night. What a treat for my listeners! After his passing I felt like jazz fans were beginning to forget him. So I decided to form Mongorama in his honor and revisit his innovative charanga-jazz years of the 1960s. Mongo Santamaría was the most impactful Jazz “conguero” ever! Hopefully Mongorama will not only remind jazz fans of his greatness, but also create new fans that will explore his vast musical body of work.     Guerrilla war and hegemony: Gramsci and Che MARCO GABBAS ABSTRACT: La guerra de guerrillas is one of the most known of Che Guevara’s works. Providing a political-ideological analysis of this book, I aim to demonstrate that Che Guevara should not be considered only a man of action, but also a political thinker and theorist. Our students are both young and old, many are parents, and most are working full- or part-time while attending college. While we have the pleasure of working with them every week of every semester, and understanding both their struggles and their dreams, the biggest part of their effort goes on behind the scenes for many people in Yuma and La Paz Counties. And yet, you benefit. You benefit when your neighbors get good jobs and can contribute to the tax base. You benefit when your company can hire skilled, productive employees. You benefit when voters in your area understand the issues as they fill out a ballot. At AWC, we also benefit when students complete their studies and accept their diploma – colleges are increasingly measured on how they prepare students to persist in school, and to complete. Arizona Western College has the highest retention and transfer rate in the state. Our students not only finish with us, but they also transfer to nearby universities, where they finish their bachelor’s degree at a rate that beats the state average for college transfers, and in greater numbers than students who went directly to a university. Winning the statistical race is not the reason we are happy, although that’s nice. We are happy because the students we work with have personal, meaningful dreams.

Durante este lapso hemos dado cuenta de lo más relevante de la historia política, social, policiaca, deportiva y electoral de nuestra entidad. Atestiguamos el destape que hizo Gonzalo Yáñez de Luis Donaldo Colosio como el seguro candidato a la Presidencia de la República y dimos cuenta de su artero asesinato. UUnnaa BBooddaa ppaarraa TTooddooss Acompañamos en su nacimiento a la Conferencia Nacional de Gobernadores cuando Ángel Sergio Guerrero Mier era principal PAG. 07 promotor de esta asociación. MAS INF. Vivimos la ola de violencia del crimen organizado en Durango que inició en el gobierno de Guerrero Mier y terminó al finalizar la administración de Ismael Hernández Deras. La pro- fesional y objetiva cobertura de estas sangrientas épocas costaron la ruptura de relaciones entre gobierno estatal y Contexto de Durango. Hemos sido testigos del surgimiento del deportivo masivo pro- movido por la sociedad civil que ha convertido a Durango en SSaalluudd iinntteeggrraall aa nniiññooss ddee SSPP una de las entidades federativas que más carreras pedestres y ciclistas celebra.
