Major Research Paper Fear of Apocalypse and Sinister Truths in the X-Men Universe An Analysis on Metaphors of Mutation, the Collective Shadow, and Prevalent Archetypes of Good and Evil in the X-Men Comics By Marco Mesquita, B.A. (Hons.), B. Ed. A Major Research Paper submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education Supervisor: Dr. Karen Krasny Second Reader: Dr. Warren Crichlow Submitted: March 29, 2017 Faculty of Education York University Toronto, Ontario Mesquita 2 Introduction Joseph Campbell (1949), the author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, declares that myths and mythmaking is an integral component to the paradigm of consciousness and the manifestation of cultural and social awareness. Myths and religion, the stories of our ancestors, resonate deeply in our collective consciousness and the study of archetypes presents for this reader’s consideration, a way of constructing meaning of and purpose for our very existence through the exploration of texts old and new (in this case, through superhero comic books). For Campbell, the realization of our own potential and destiny goes beyond making whimsical connections with heroes, gods, and the natural world; it is through the vast nexus of patterned and interwoven stories (spanning the history of our world) that we may realize how the hero’s journey correlates to our own pursuit of knowledge and amelioration. The hero’s quest may indeed be reflective of our own moralistic pursuits and journey to transcendence; however, I contend that it is through the final confrontation with the Jungian shadow that real lessons are learned by both the characters and the reader, which in turn add to the construction of a shared consciousness and reflections on morality and identity.

The Starfish Steals the ShowBy S. H. WellsCollecting: X-Club (miniseries) 1-5Bonus: Pencil Gallery Art Process GalleryI have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by this miniseries. The issues collected here feature the X-Men's ("the real X-Men of Utopia" as Cyclops points out) science team: Dr. Nemesis, Madison Jeffries, Kavita Rao, and Danger. As a fan of the X-Men I was aware of these generally peripheral characters, and I was dubious about a series spotlighting them. However this graphic novel contains at its core a fun romp through quantum theory interspersed with a man-machine love story with some Nazis and a hilarious starfish thrown in to round out the story.Yes this is one of more "out there" x-plots, but the novel also has enough nods to the mainstream x-series that I think it is worth picking up. Cyclops in particular comes across as nearly desperate in his post-Schism position.Writer Simon Spurrier handles the series well.

The Thesis Committee for Molly Louise Sharp Certifies that this is the approved version of the following thesis: Gender, Feminism, and Heroism in Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men Comics APPROVED BY SUPERVISING COMMITTEE: Supervisor: Mary Celeste Kearney Janet Staiger Gender, Feminism, and Heroism in Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men Comics by Molly Louise Sharp, B.A. Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts The University of Texas at Austin May 2011 Abstract Gender, Feminism, and Heroism in Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men Comics Molly Louise Sharp, M.A. The University of Texas at Austin, 2011 Supervisor: Mary Celeste Kearney Hero characters and their narratives serve as important sites for negotiating a culture’s values. Informed by sexism in Western cultures, female heroes often construct and perpetuate women’s statuses as second-class citizens. However, female heroes also can and sometimes do work against such representations. This thesis argues for a third wave feminist interpretation of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men comic books as a text that brings multiple feminist perspectives into conversation with each other and that opposes certain patriarchal systems. Through narrative and formal analysis, I explore female X-Men Emma Frost and Kitty Pryde as characters who reject gender essentialism and misogynist value systems and whose relationship addresses concepts of difference in third wave feminism. Using similar methods, I also explore an interpretation of villain Danger as a failure to integrate radical feminist ideologies into third wave feminism.

The year 2020 can be described as a global disaster. The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc, sparing no nation, developed or developing. India was no exception and we have seen the consequences on the economy and society. The rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus resulted in extensive lockdowns which also adversely affected the Centre’s calendar of programmes. The last physical programme was held in March 2020 when a complete lockdown was declared. However, we took the initiative to use online platforms to connect with our Members, and the positive response and feedback were very encouraging. In the month of April, our online programmes were drawn from our archives.
