Paul and his older brother, Leonard, were raised in a strict Dutch Calvinist home where faith and church were an essential aspect of family and community life. Because of the tenets of the Calvinist Christian Reform Church, Schrader famously did not see his first film, The Absent-Minded Professor, until he was seventeen years old. -

Rhodes, Robert Singer and Frances Smith This series produces new critical volumes from an interdisciplinary perspective, bringing influential, yet neglected, American directors to the attention of a new audience of scholars and students in both Film Studies and American Studies. ReFocus ReFocus: The Films of Paul Schrader The Films of Clueless and Fast Times at Ridgemont High are affectionately regarded as key Paul Schrader foundations of the modern Hollywood teen movie. However, the director and screenwriter for these films, Amy Heckerling, is far from a household name, despite the major influence she has had on contemporary US cinema. The first book-length study of her films, ReFocus: The Films of Amy Heckerling brings EDITED BY together a collection of original essays from a wide range of critical perspectives, MICHELLE E. MOORE AND BRIAN BREMS aiming to recuperate Heckerling’s place as a distinctive female voice in the contemporary Hollywood landscape. Divided into four sections, each examining an aspect of Heckerling’s work, the volume draws on research from applied linguistics and audience studies, as well as from gender and film studies. Questions of gender, genre and identity, as well as the role of women in Hollywood and the implications of Heckerling’s recent turn to television, are all considered in a volume that aims to refocus on the films and influence of this unique American director. Bergstrom, Chair This dissertation examines the relationship between the feminist movement and Hollywood during the 1970s, specifically as it impacted the hiring practices and creative output of women directors working in the film industry. Due to the activism of the feminist movement, in particular the feminist reform efforts of the Women’s Committees of Hollywood’s professional guilds—the Directors Guild, the Screen Actors Guild, and the Writers Guild—the number of women directors in 1970s Hollywood began to increase compared to previous decades. From the mid-1930s till the mid-1960s, only two women filmmakers had careers as directors in Hollywood: Dorothy Arzner and Ida Lupino. This research reveals that between 1966 and 1980 there were at least fifteen women making movies in the commercial film industry: Karen Arthur, Anne Bancroft, Joan Darling, Lee Grant, Barbara Loden, Elaine May, Barbara Peeters, Joan Rivers, ii Stephanie Rothman, Beverly Sebastian, Joan Micklin Silver, Joan Tewkesbury, Jane Wagner, Nancy Walker, and Claudia Weill. -
