From the President's Desk
JAN/FEB 2006 From the President’s desk: 2006, the 75th anniversary of the Genetics Society of America, will be marked by a number of initiatives to reinvigorate the Society’s mission of promoting research and education in genetics. A highlight was the recently held GSA sponsored conference, “Genetic Analysis: From Model Organisms to Human Biology” in San Diego from January 5-7. This conference emphasized the importance of model organism research by illustrating the crucial contributions to human biology resulting from discoveries in these organisms. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) supported this conference both financially and by participation of key NIH administrators, including Jeremy M. Berg, director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. In addition to the superb science talks by international leaders the MOHB conference showcased other important and new GSA initiatives including education, public policy advocacy, graduate student support and recognition of outstanding model organism geneticists. Robin Wright, Education Committee chair, led a round table discussion on undergraduate education and the Joint Steering Committee for Public Policy and the Congressional Liaison Committee sponsored a session on science advocacy and public policy. There was a mentor lunch to support graduate students and postdocs in the next steps of their careers, and the three GSA medals were presented during the banquet, with Victor Ambros receiving the GSA Medal, Fred Sherman the Beadle Award, and Masatoshi Nei the Morgan Award. (For research highlights at the meeting, see pages 6 and 7 of this issue.) The 75th anniversary will also usher in changes to our society’s journal, GENETICS. -

This is an inventory of the vascular alien flora of Catalonia (northeastern Iberian Peninsula, Spain) updated to 2018, representing 1068 alien taxa in total. 554 (52.0%) out of them are casual and 514 (48.0%) are established. 87 taxa (8.1% of the total number and 16.8 % of those established) show an invasive behaviour. The geographic zone with more alien plants is the most anthropogenic maritime area. However, the differences among regions decrease when the degree of naturalization of taxa increases and the number of invaders is very similar in all sectors. Only 26.2% of the taxa are more or less abundant, while the rest are rare or they have vanished. The alien flora is represented by 115 families, 87 out of them include naturalised species. The most diverse genera are Opuntia (20 taxa), Amaranthus (18 taxa) and Solanum (15 taxa). Most of the alien plants have been introduced since the beginning of the twentieth century (70.7%), with a strong increase since 1970 (50.3% of the total number). Almost two thirds of alien taxa have their origin in Euro-Mediterranean area and America, while 24.6% come from other geographical areas. The taxa originated in cultivation represent 9.5%, whereas spontaneous hybrids only 1.2%. From the temporal point of view, the rate of Euro-Mediterranean taxa shows a progressive reduction parallel to an increase of those of other origins, which have reached 73.2% of introductions during the last 50 years. -

CENTA CONFERENCE 2018 Welcome! The NERC CENTA Annual Conference brings together students, researchers and external partners interested in research that falls under the natural environment theme. It aims to showcase recent research by both CENTA students and PhD students funded through other DTPs as well as inviting external partners. It is a fantastic opportunity for all CENTA PhD students to showcase their research in a relaxed and supporting environment and interact with industry partners and other members of the environmental sciences community. Non-CENTA PhD students and other early career scientists whose work relates to any of the CENTA research themes are welcome to attend. All current CENTA students will be presenting their research, either with an oral presentation or a poster. At the CENTA Annual Conference there is something for everyone, including talks, posters, workshops, and plenty of networking opportunities. January 2012 Find this book: As a geneticist whose work revolves around surnames, genealogy and ancestry, I have been struck time and again by how profoundly the genetic information I provide can fit into a person’s narrative of their own identity and who they are today. During my studies examining the genetic legacy of the Vikings in the current population of the north of England I have been surprised by the fervour with which many (though certainly not all) people want to claim Viking ancestry. ‘Can you tell me if I’m a Viking?’, is a question I am commonly asked, as if Vikings are still routinely pitching up in their longboats and wandering around wearing their horned helmets (which they didn’t wear, they’re a Victorian-bestowed accessory). Despite my pointing out that in my research I am looking at just one of their many genetic lineages and that as everyone on earth is related we will all have Vikings in our family tree somewhere, this is not enough for many people. -

Abstract A consensus has developed among social and biological scientists around the problematic nature of genetic ancestry testing, specifically that its popularity will lead to greater genetic essentialism in social identities. Many of these arguments assume a relatively uncritical engagement with DNA, under ‘high-stakes’ conditions. We suggest that in a biosocial society, more pervasive ‘low-stakes’ engagement is more likely. Through qualitative interviews with participants in a study of the genetic legacy of the Vikings in Northern England, we investigate how genetic ancestry results are discursively worked through. The identities formed in ‘becoming a Viking’ through DNA are characterised by fluidity and reflexivity, rather than essentialism. DNA results are woven into a wider narrative of selfhood relating to the past, the value of which lies in its potential to be passed on within families. While not unproblematic, the relatively banal nature of such narratives within contemporary society is characteristic of the ‘biosociable’.
