Angelica — A woman, Angelica, lies on top of a dirty mattress in the middle of an abandoned church at night. She moans in pain and clutches at her head, and then pulls out a revolver from nearby. She then begins fumbling through her box of things, which is full of syringes and pieces of tinfoil, which she searches through desperately to try to find one that has heroin in it. When she doesn’t find any, she reaches up... and a man, Jonas, takes her hand. Jonas assures her that that he’s there and holds Angelica in his arms, calling her ”his love.” She tells him that she hurts, and that she needs more ”medicine” (heroin), but he tells her that it has to be now. She warns that she’s too weak, but Jonas reminds her that she was the strongest of them before warning her that they’ll be hunted, born or unborn– only Angelica can give them a fighting chance of survival. Suddenly, she sees visions of eight people across the world. 3 Sense8 Episode Guide Lito Rodriguez is in Mexico City, Mexico, where he enters a church with a gun. Riley Blue, an Icelandic DJ, plays a set in a London, England club called KOKO. Sun Bak, a Korean businesswoman in Seoul, practices tai chi outdoors. Wolfgang Bogdanow, a German locksmith and safe-cracker, is at a club in Berlin. Will Gorski, an American police officer, makes his rounds in Chicago. Kala Dandekar, an Indian pharmacist in Mumbai, walks through an office building. Capheus, a Kenyan bus driver in Nairobi, prepares for his day. Nomi Marks, an American hacker and political blogger, injects herself with her hormone treat- ments in her bathroom in San Francisco. Each of them sees Angelica as well, standing before them, although no one else can. After a moment, Angelica gasps and collapses into Jonas’s arms, and he proudly tells her that she did it. She asks Jonas to protect them, and he warns that ”they’re” here just as someone pulls up outside. Another man, Mr. Whispers, appears in Angelica’s visions and realizes that she’s been using the drugs to hide from him. Whispers realizes that she’s giving birth and says that he can feel her pain. Jonas tells Angelica to remember what Whispers has done, and Whispers tells Angelica to let Jonas know that he’s looking forward to meet him. She tells Jonas that she loves him, and Whispers says asks if Jonas knows that she’s lying. Angelica prepares to kill herself, and when Jonas tells her that he’s staying with her, she insists to him that she can’t do it if he’s there. As she prepares to shoot herself, Whispers says that they both know she won’t do it, because she’s one of them and there’s more work to be done. The real Whispers and his men then enter the church, and the Whispers in Angelica’s head tells her to put the gun down. She puts the gun in her mouth and pulls the trigger, killing herself. Will — A young Will runs through the forest, called on by a girl. He catches a glimpse of her, begging him for help, and she enters an ancient manor. Will goes in after her and the girl points down a hallway. Will becomes his adult self and follows the girl, and comes to Angelica’s corpse in the empty church. She comes to life and sits up, and then kills herself again with the gun in her mouth... And Will jerks awake, grabbing for his gun. Gasping, he realizes he was dreaming, and he clutches at his head as he goes into the bathroom to look in the medicine cabinet. However, when he grabs the bottle of aspirin, he hesitates for a moment before tossing it into the bin. Very loud club music is playing from the apartment next door, and Will, frustrated by the fact that he’s been awakened in the middle of the night, goes over and knocks to tell them to turn it down. After a moment, there’s no response, so Will finally opens the unlocked door. When he goes in, the music stops and Will discovers that the apartment is empty, and no music is being played in there. Riley — In London, Riley is playing a set at a club as the guests cheer. Afterward, Riley meets with her manager, Jacks Riles, and his partner Nocker. Jacks congratulates her on her great night of DJing and introduces her to a man named Nyx. When they invite her to go out with them, Riley complains that she has a migraine, and Jacks tells her to tell Nyx about her vision. Nyx says that he understands what she’s talking about, but Riley claims that it was just too many drugs. Lito — In Mexico City, a bloody Lito enters a church with a gun and approaches the padre. The nun begs Lito to stop but he pushes her away and tells the Padre that he came to kill him. The ”padre” complains that they’re going off-script and the director calls cut, revealing that this was all filming for a movie. The crew takes five and the director asks Lito why he’s having visions of suicidal angels and is forgetting his lines. Lito says that he’s not feeling like himself, and the director tells his lover that Lito needs to be his character, Tino El Caido. Sun — In Seoul, the secretary tells Sun that her brother’s assistant called to say that Joong-Ki still isn’t there. She warns Sun that Mr. Yuen has arrived, and Sun meets with the man in the conference room. She introduces herself, but Yuen insists that he’s there to close, and remarks that women don’t close things. As Yuen chuckles at his sexist joke, Sun clenches her fist and tries to keep in control. She suddenly gets a vision that she’s at the church with Angelica, who starts to rise into a seated position on the mattress. Back in the real world, Joong-Ki arrives and tells Sun to get them some coffee before leading Yuen away. 4 Sense8 Episode Guide Riley — In London, Nyx talks about a psychic experience that his nieces had.

On the contrary, in The Maldives there was a recent increase in the number of crimes that are punishable by death, and in countries such as Pakistan and Indonesia, who had de-facto moratoriums for several years, executions have resumed. Of particular concern, notably in Asia, is the continued imposition of the death penalty for drug crimes despite this being a clear violation of international human rights stan- dards.

  • The Staircase Model” – Labor Control of Temporary Agency Workers in a Swedish Call Center
“The Staircase Model” – Labor Control of Temporary Agency Workers in a Swedish Call Center ❚❚ Gunilla Olofsdotter Senior lecturer in Sociology, Department of Social Sciences, Mid Sweden University, Sweden ABSTRACT The article explores the labor control practices implemented in a call center with extensive con- tracting of temporary agency workers (TAWs). More specifically, the article focuses on how struc- tural and ideological power works in this setting and on the effects of this control for TAWs’ working conditions. Open-ended, semi-structured interviews were conducted with TAWs, regular employees, and a manager in a call center specializing in telecommunication services in Sweden. The results show that ideological power is important in adapting the interests of TAWs to correspond with those of temporary work agencies (TWAs) and their client companies, in this case the call center. The results also show how ideological power is mixed with structural control in terms of technologi- cal control systems and, most importantly, a systematic categorization of workers in a hierarchical structure according to their value to the call center. By systemically categorizing workers in the staircase model, a structural inequality is produced and reproduced in the call center. The motives for working in the call center are often involuntary and are caused by the shortage of work other than a career in support services. As a consequence, feelings of insecurity and an awareness of the precarious nature of their assignment motivate TAWs to enhance their performance and hopefully take a step up on the staircase. This implies new understandings of work where job insecurity has become a normal part of working life.

Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation.

  • Idioms-And-Expressions.Pdf
Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.
