Born Claude Russell Bridges on April 2, 1942, in Lawton, Oklahoma, he began studying classical piano at age three, a decade later adopting the trumpet and forming his first band. At 14, Russell lied about his age to land a gig at a Tulsa nightclub, playing behind Ronnie Hawkins & the Hawks before touring in support of Jerry Lee Lewis. Two years later, he settled in Los Angeles, studying guitar under the legendary James Burton and appearing on sessions with Dorsey Burnette and Glen Campbell. As a member of Spector’s renowned studio group, Russell played on many of the finest pop singles of the ’60s, also arranging classics like Ike & Tina Turner’s monumental “River Deep, Mountain High”; other hits bearing his input include the Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man,” Gary Lewis & the Playboys’ “This Diamond Ring,” and Herb Alpert’s “A Taste of Honey.” In 1967, Russell built his own recording studio, teaming with guitarist Marc Benno to record the acclaimed Look Inside the Asylum Choir LP.

  • Psaudio Copper
Issue 95 OCTOBER 7TH, 2019 Welcome to Copper #95! This is being written on October 4th---or 10/4, in US notation. That made me recall one of my former lives, many years and many pounds ago: I was a UPS driver. One thing I learned from the over-the- road drivers was that the popular version of CB-speak, "10-4, good buddy" was not generally used by drivers, as it meant something other than just, "hi, my friend". The proper and socially-acceptable term was "10-4, good neighbor." See? You never know what you'll learn here. In #95, Professor Larry Schenbeck takes a look at the mysteries of timbre---and no, that's not pronounced like a lumberjack's call; Dan Schwartz returns to a serious subject --unfortunately; Richard Murison goes on a sea voyage; Roy Hall pays a bittersweet visit to Cuba; Anne E. Johnson’s Off the Charts looks at the long and mostly-wonderful career of Leon Russell; J.I. Agnew explains how machine screws brought us sound recording; Bob Wood continues wit his True-Life Radio Tales; Woody Woodward continues his series on Jeff Beck; Anne’s Trading Eights brings us classic cuts from Miles Davis; Tom Gibbs is back to batting .800 in his record reviews; and I get to the bottom of things in The Audio Cynic, and examine direct some off-the-wall turntables in Vintage Whine. Copper #95 wraps up with Charles Rodrigues on extreme room treatment, and a lovely Parting Shot from my globe-trotting son, Will Leebens.

• JJ Cale the Silent Master a Dreamlike Ride Through The
About this English translation: The book was written in German; my mother tongue, it is the only language I know as a writer, with all nuances. My story about J.J. Cale's music and his artistic career would of course have deserved a professional English translation - but unfortunately, as an independent musician and author, I really lack the necessary money for this. That's why I translated the book here for you with deepl.com - it is currently the best online translator worldwide. I have additionally enhanced the Deepl-translation, but my English is limited - the subtleties of my mother tongue are lost, partly also the humor, and there will be some mistakes in presentation (f.e. with some "-characters) and maybe also grammar errors here and there. So if you have the feeling that certain phrases don't make sense or sound strange - just think "the computer is inferior to humans" - or for my sake "they're crazy, these Swiss guys!" :-) I'm sure you as a J.J. Cale fan will understand and enjoy the story anyway, and maybe here and there you'll learn hitherto unknown details about the wonderful J.J. Cale and his immortal music. • Rita Coolidge: a Double Review
1 Rita Coolidge: A Double Review Her 2016 Memoirs and her 1971 debut album Reviewed by Garry Victor Hill Delta Lady: A Memoir by Rita Coolidge with Michael Walker. New York; Harper, 2016. 225 pages. Illustrated. All illustrations are from Wiki sources/the Public Domain and are used only after gaining permission following requested steps. Several pleasing aspects of this memoir make it a welcome read. When writing memoirs celebrities often write exposés of other celebrities, usually with self- 2 justifications. Going into elaborate denial is also common. Frequently we learn little if anything about their art, or what made them famous. Some years ago one Hollywood star managed a life story that did not have a word about their motivations for acting, how they developed their craft or interpreted their roles. Instead over a third of the book was a bitter tirade against a partner. Fortunately Delta Lady: A Memoir avoids these faults. In 225 pages Rita Coolidge gives readers a great deal of information about her musical background, development, inspirations, recordings and performances. When it comes to dealing with people she has known, praise and positivity dominate. Fellow musicians Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Joe Cocker, Claudia Lenear, Booker T. Washington (formerly her brother in law) her lover Graham Nash and family members, all gain praise for both their personal qualities and musical abilities. She writes more ambivalently about Stephen Stills, Leon Russell, Bonnie Bramlett, Eric Clapton, her husband of six years Kris Kristofferson and his mother. It takes a great deal for her to condemn anyone and only a few examples (who are not named here) are given by her.
