THE BOOGIE MAN Boogie pianist Ben Waters has a new record out, entitled ‘Boogie 4 Stu’, paying tribute to Ian Stewart, a founding member of The Rolling Stones, who went on to become their road manager. As a long term fan of Stewart and his playing, Ben talked to his friend Charlie Watts about paying tribute with an album. Watts immediately wanted to be a part of it, which led to fellow Stones Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards hurling themsleves into the fray. Ex-Stones man Bill Wyman threw his name into the hat, along with fellow gifted ivory tinkler Jools Holland. With a star studded guest list, a portrait of Ian Stewart being commissioned by Sir Peter Blake for the cover and proceeds from the album going toward raising funds for the British Heart Foundation, James Gaden thought it was time Ben got to tell people all about it. Ben, you’re an experienced pianist in your own right and have worked with a host of big names - for readers unfamiliar with your work, can you provide a brief overview of your work to date? I started playing piano when I was about 14ish. My first exposure to this kind of music was Ian Stewart playing at my aunt and uncle’s 25th wedding anniversary. Shortly after this, Fats Domino’s 60th Birthday was on TV with Ray Charles and Jerry ‘Boogie For Stu’, as I mentioned just then, this was because of his love for Lionel Lee Lewis. I really fell in love with the music and wanted to start playing.

  • Discography of the Mainstream Label
Discography of the Mainstream Label Mainstream was founded in 1964 by Bob Shad, and in its early history reissued material from Commodore Records and Time Records in addition to some new jazz material. The label released Big Brother & the Holding Company's first material in 1967, as well as The Amboy Dukes' first albums, whose guitarist, Ted Nugent, would become a successful solo artist in the 1970s. Shad died in 1985, and his daughter, Tamara Shad, licensed its back catalogue for reissues. In 1991 it was resurrected in order to reissue much of its holdings on compact disc, and in 1993, it was purchased by Sony subsidiary Legacy Records. 56000/6000 Series 56000 mono, S 6000 stereo - The Commodore Recordings 1939, 1944 - Billy Holiday [1964] Strange Fruit/She’s Funny That Way/Fine and Mellow/Embraceable You/I’ll Get By//Lover Come Back to Me/I Cover the Waterfront/Yesterdays/I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues/I’ll Be Seeing You 56001 mono, S 6001 stereo - Begin the Beguine - Eddie Heywood [1964] Begin the Beguine/Downtown Cafe Boogie/I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me/Carry Me Back to Old Virginny/Uptown Cafe Boogie/Love Me Or Leave Me/Lover Man/Save Your Sorrow 56002 mono, S 6002 stereo - Influence of Five - Hawkins, Young & Others [1964] Smack/My Ideal/Indiana/These Foolish Things/Memories Of You/I Got Rhythm/Way Down Yonder In New Orleans/Stardust/Sittin' In/Just A Riff 56003 mono, S 6003 stereo - Dixieland-New Orleans - Teagarden, Davison & Others [1964] That’s A- Plenty/Panama/Ugly Chile/Riverboat Shuffle/Royal Garden Blues/Clarinet

  • Boogie News Ausgabe Juni 2016

  • Bob Corritore Bio
Bob Corritore Bio Bob Corritore is one of the most active and highly regarded blues harmonica players on the scene today. His style passionately carries forward the old school of playing that Corritore learned as a young man directly from many of original pioneers of Chicago Blues. His sympathetic, yet fiery harmonica playing is featured on over 25 releases to date, on labels such as HighTone, HMG, Blue Witch, Blind Pig, Earwig, Putumayo, Random Chance, and the VizzTone Label Group. Many of these acclaimed releases have been nominated for various Handy, Grammy, and Blues Music Awards. Bob is also widely recognized for his many roles in the blues, as band leader, club owner, record producer, radio show host, arts foundation founder, and occasional writer. His amazing website www.bobcorritore.com and his weekly e-newsletter reflect a life thoroughly invested in the blues. Born on September 27, 1956 in Chicago, Bob first heard Muddy Waters on the radio at age 12, an event which changed his life forever. Within a year, he was playing harmonica and collecting blues albums. He would see blues shows in his early teens, including attending a Muddy Waters performance at his high school gymnasium. He would cut his teeth sitting in with John Henry Davis on Maxwell Street until he was old enough to sneak into blues clubs. He hung around great harp players such as Big Walter Horton, Little Mack Simmons, Louis Myers, Junior Wells, Big John Wrencher, and Carey Bell, and received harmonica tips and encouragement from many of them. He would regularly see the Aces, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Billy Boy Arnold, John Brim, Sunnyland Slim, Smokey Smothers, Eddie Taylor, and in many cases became personal friends with these blues veterans.

  • Condolence Motion Final Billy Bryans.Docx
CONDOLENCE MOTION Moved by: Councillor Pam McConnell Seconded by: Councillor Adam Vaughan The Mayor and Members of Toronto City Council are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Billy Bryans on April 23, 2012. A pioneer of cross-cultural music in Toronto, Billy Bryans was a drummer and producer best known as the co-founder of the politically inflected pop-group The Parachute Club, renowned for its anthemic 1983 hit Rise Up. Billy got his start in Montreal in the 1960s, in a Beatles influenced boy band MG and the Escorts. Billy made his musical breakthrough in Toronto in the 1970s, producing and drumming for jazz and blues bands like Horn, Downchild Blues Band, the Cameo Blues Band, and the Original Sloth Band. Billy became a fixture in Toronto's burgeoning indie music scene in the 1980s, performing at The Cameron, the Horsehoe, Grossmans, the Cabana Room, the El Mocambo, and The Bamboo Club. Billy moved seamlessly among musical genres, including punk, new wave, funk, calypso, latin, reggae, and rock, providing the backbeat for groups such as The Government, The Time Twins, and The BopCats. Performing with Mama Quilla II, he met lead singer, feminist icon, and activist Lorraine Segato. Together in the bands V, Compass, and the Parachute Club, they championed a hybrid sound that cut across gender and race, providing an expansive and enticing soundtrack for a multicultural city finding its voice. During his career, Billy collected four Junos as a performer or producer for such artists as the Afronubians, the Puente Brothers, Buffy Ste Marie, Raffi, George Fox, Alex Cuba, Punjabi by Nature, Morgan Davis, and Laura Fernandez.
