Royal University Hospital Foundation Purpose Statement To create excellence in and impact health care by raising funds that anticipate and respond to needs for research, education and patient care. A Joint Message from Our Volunteer Chairair and CEO

As you read through our Annual Report to you—the generousous donors, volunteers and stakeholders of the Royal Universityit y Hospital Foundation—we hope you will see how vital your support has been over the past year. Since our inception inn 1983, the RUH Foundation has raised and invested more than $65 million through three vital pillarslars at Royall University Hospital: ground breaking research, specialized training and advanced patient care. The 2009-2010 Annual Report reflects our ongoing commitment to fund initiatives not traditionally supported by government operating dollars, directly enhancing the patient care experience, supporting knowledge expansion through education and teaching, and advancing medical research that improves treatment practices.

You will read about grateful patients as well as staff and physician champions who believe in and support the Royal Vital Care Campaign. You will learn how the legacy of the $15 million Royal Care Campaign lives on, as invested funds begin to pay dividends for our hospital, our community and our health region. You will also see how The Future in Mind Campaign, launched just two and a half years ago, has made a lasting impact on our community and on the patients who are receiving treatment at the new Irene and Leslie Dubé Centre for Mental Health, which overlooks the South Saskatchewan River at RUH. We would not be able to tell these stories without your support and passion for our hospital and our Foundation.

Thanks to the generosity of so many, RUH Foundation raised $5,104, 456 in 2009-2010 through donations, endowment donations, events, gaming and investment income. We granted $640,528, including $191,215 for research, $125,083 for education and training, and $324,230 for patient care and capital projects. As well, the Foundation paid $1.2 million that was committed in 2008-2009 to the Saskatoon Health Region for capital projects such as the Irene and Leslie Dubé Centre for Mental Health.

As this Annual Report demonstrates, at Royal University Hospital Foundation, we cannot do this work alone. We thank you our donors, volunteers, physicians and hospital staff who make our work possible and continue to transform the quality of health care that the Saskatoon Health Region is able to provide to this community and our province as a whole.

A Message from the Saskatoon Health Region

The year 2009 marked many milestones for the Royal University Hospital Foundation. This report illustrates some of the great work the Foundation has been doing over the past year, thanks to the donors who give so generously.

One of the biggest highlights for the Saskatoon Health Region and the Foundation was seeing the first patients move into the new Irene and Leslie Dubé Centre for Mental Health, thanks in part to the huge success of The Future in Mind Campaign. This campaign set the bar extremely high in terms of giving. Rising to the challenge were Les and Irene Dubé, with an unprecedented single donation of $3 million going entirely toward construction of our new mental health centre. The year also marked the launch of the Royal Vital Care Campaign, an initiative to raise $2.8 million for vital sign monitors, defibrillators and a centralized monitoring system. Another highlight was the unveiling of the beautiful Cameco Skywalk, which was named in recognition of Cameco’s $1.5 million donation to the Foundation’s Royal Care Campaign. The stunning photographs, murals and improved lighting have transformed this skywalk into a warmer, more inviting and safer entrance to the hospital. Maura Davies President and CEO, The Foundation enjoyed many other successes this past year, all of which were made possible by generous Saskatoon Health Region philanthropists within our community. These donors model the Region’s core values of stewardship and collaboration. With their help, we are able to put Patients First and enhance the care and service experience for the thousands of individuals and their families who turn to us for exceptional care and service.

The Saskatoon Health Region values our partnership with the Royal University Hospital Foundation and we look forward to continued collaboration and success in the year ahead.

2 A year to remember, a year to be proud!

Good things often come in threes. And like three wishes, the “three Rs” and the Three Musketeers, great things happen when we combine our strengths, ingenuity and passion to reach a . The team of cardiologists at RUH has caught that vital spirit. Together, they made a $30,000 contribution to the Royal Vital Care Campaign. “We decided that the best way for us to give back to the community is through the hospital, because it’s where we work and where we directly see the benefits for our division and our patients,” says Dr. Jawed Akhtar.

Bill Cey lived to see his family again, as well as his prized Clydesdale horses.

4 However, thanks to the RUH Foundation, Dr. McKinny was able to obtain the funding to pursue her dream after all. She was among 11 physicians to receive fellowship funding provided through the Royal Care Campaign. With that fellowship funding, along with assistance from the Kidney Foundation and the Saskatoon Health Region, she was able to pursue specialized training in urology in Edmonton, developing an expertise in laparoscopic techniques used in the treatment of kidney and prostate cancers, and in Lori Isinger, President RUH Auxiliary (left) presents a endoscopic techniques used in the treatment of large kidney cheque to Arla Gustafson, CEO RUH Foundation; stones. The Better Teamwork interdisciplinary team included Dr. Ed Lemire (Medical Genetics), for Emergency Dr. Chris Voll (Neurology Medicine), Dr. Sheldon Wiebe (Diagnostic Caesareans Imaging) and Dr. Noel Lowry (Pediatric Neurology). Their study found that carriers of the gene that causes Cree Leukodystrophy are not affected themselves, but their offspring who inherit the gene may be affected with devastating results.

“It’s a small piece of the puzzle and will lead to the next stage of research,” says Huntsman. “Without the financial support of the Foundation, we wouldn’t have been able to perform this study.”

13 Remembering >"A friend, a family member, a caregiver, a colleague who has touched your life and made the world a better place.

“In Memory” gifts are made in lasting memory of loved ones, while “In Honour” gifts recognize special individuals, family members and friends, or celebrate a special occasion.
