Alice Zeniter, L’Art de perdre AGRADECIMIENTOS Hace años, leí en alguna parte una cita de Stuart Hall que afirmaba que la identidad es una conversación siempre inconclusa. Aquella idea se sumó a otros sedimentos que, poco a poco, conformaron el empuje definitivo que me llevó a emprender esta tesis. Las siguientes líneas quieren ser un agradecimiento a todas aquellas personas que en el viaje doctoral me han ayudado a pensar sobre lo que significan las identidades y las identificaciones; a quienes han dialogado conmigo, con los textos que he elegido por compañía, y me han ayudado a resolver dudas, me han aportado herramientas de análisis. También a quienes han planteado preguntas para colocarme en el terreno de la problematización constante, el territorio que mejor acoge la noción de pertenencia, y el que sigo transitando. Esta investigación ahonda en la memoria, y teoriza sobre sus olvidos, y así como no recuerdo dónde leí la frase de Hall, es posible que olvide listar algún nombre; queda inscrito en el diálogo que he pretendido articular en este trabajo. En primer lugar, quisiera hacer constar aquí el marco académico que ha hecho posible esta tesis. Como beneficiaria de una ayuda para la formación de profesorado universitario concedida por el Ministerio de Educación, fui becaria del Centre Dona i Literatura de la Universitat de Barcelona (hoy ADHUC–Centre de Recerca Teoria, Gènere, Sexualitat) desde 2014 hasta 2018. A Pepi, que heredó y me dio herencia. vii viii ABSTRACT This dissertation aims to put forward a thorough reflection on contemporary processes of identity constructions, both individual and collective, which are criss-crossed by experiences of migration inscribed within the Mediterranean space, which I consider in its heterogeneity. Through two specific case studies, approached from a comparative and gender perspective, I look at subjects who understand themselves as tied to (physical and symbolic) experiences of displacement and claim fluid subjectivities. The works by Najat El Hachmi (Beni Sidel, 1979) and Dalila Kerchouche (Bias, 1973) present different factual dimensions and textual fabrics and are of a polyphonic nature. Because they pay attention to the multi-layered consequences that enfold from population movements, their nuanced considerations represent a precious guideline of sorts in understanding the syncretic fabric that shapes our world. I use the literary texts produced by these two authors of Maghrebi origin who grew up in Europe in order to filter my analyses, for I believe that the attentive regard that literature enables is of great value when it comes to problematizing rigid understandings of identity. Both El Hachmi and Kerchouche inherited an experience of migration, initiated by their fathers, that led them to embody and undertake different interstitial positions in Catalonia and France, where they respectively live. In their works, they dwell on all these “in- between” positions that they, as writers, and the characters that they portray occupy. To do so, they use autobiographical essays first and, later on, fiction in order to delve into inherited cultural traditions, to contest clear-cut identity labels, and to explore the languages and experiences that have shaped their subjectivities. I thus read these texts as the tools that the authors use to enter into a dialogical relationship with their European societies, societies that, I argue, perceive them as an immigrant (in El Hachmi’s case) and as a harki (in the case of Kerchouche). As such, I critically consider El Hachmi’s and Kerchouche’s works as literary products and also as political artefacts that bespeak the authors’s agency. The thesis is divided into two sections, “In Between Labels” and “In Between Languages, Memories and Spaces” –each containing two chapters–, which account for the different elements playing a part in the construction of their individual and collective identities ix –a concept, that of identity, that I approach using epistemological cues borrowed from several disciplines, mainly those of postcolonial studies and the decolonial school, as I explain in the Introduction.

    “Between Borders: Moroccan Migrations in L’últim patriarca by Najat El-Hachmi” A Lecture by Kathleen McNerney Prize-winning translator of women’s writing from Catalonia Wednesday April 24, 2019 4pm 1301 Rolfe Hall, UCLA Born in Morocco in 1979, Najat El Hachmi immigrated with her family to the Barcelona area when she was a child. She attended Catalan schools and then studied Arabic literature at the University of Barcelona. Her first book, Jo també sóc catalana (2004), is autobiographical, dealing with issues of identity and belonging in a new place. In 2008, the novel L’últim patriarca won the very prestigious Ramon Llull Prize for Catalan Literature and was soon translated into English. Mare de llet i mel is her most recent work. Kathleen McNerney is professor emerita of Spanish and Women’s Studies at West Virginia University, where she was Benedum Distinguished Scholar and Singer Professor of the Humanities. She has awarded several prizes in Catalonia for her work, including the Premi Batista i Roca from the Institut de Projecció Exterior. Her work includes Latin American, Castilian, and French literatures, but focuses on Catalan women authors. She is coeditor of Double Minorities of Spain (MLA 1994) and Visions and Revisions: Women’s Narrative in Twentieth-Century Spain (Rodopi 2008). She has also edited collections of essays on Mercè Rodoreda and is translator of stories, poetry, and four novels. Her latest publication is Silent Souls and Other Stories (MLA 2018) by Caterina Albert, which has just been awarded the translation prize by the North American Catalan Society. In her talk, McNerney will focus on Najat El Hachmi’s novels.

Ettensohn, Ph.D., Brown University, May 2014. This project evaluates the twinned discourses of globalism and humanitarianism through an analysis of the body in the postcolonial novel. In offering celebratory accounts of the promises of globalization, recent movements in critical theory have privileged the cosmopolitan, transnational, and global over the postcolonial. Recognizing the potential pitfalls of globalism, these theorists have often turned to transnational fiction as supplying a corrective dose of humanitarian sentiment that guards a global affective community against the potential exploitations and excesses of neoliberalism. While authors such as Amitav Ghosh, Nuruddin Farah, and Rohinton Mistry have been read in a transnational, cosmopolitan framework––which they have often courted and constructed––I argue that their theorizations of the body contain a critical, postcolonial rejoinder to the liberal humanist tradition that they seek to critique from within.

    HAITI UNBOUND A SPIRALIST CHALLENGE TO THE POSTCOLONIAL CANON H Both politically and in the fields of art and literature, Haiti has long been relegated to the margins of the so-called ‘New World’. Marked by exceptionalism, the voices of some of its AITI most important writers have consequently been muted by the geopolitical realities of the nation’s fraught history. In Haiti Unbound, Kaiama L. Glover offers a close look at the works of three such writers: the Haitian Spiralists Frankétienne, Jean-Claude Fignolé, and René Philoctète. While Spiralism has been acknowledged by scholars and regional writer- intellectuals alike as a crucial contribution to the French-speaking Caribbean literary tradition, the Spiralist ethic-aesthetic has not yet been given the sustained attention of a full-length U study. Glover’s book represents the first effort in any language to consider the works of the three Spiralist authors both individually and collectively, and so fills an astonishingly empty NBO place in the assessment of postcolonial Caribbean aesthetics. Touching on the role and destiny of Haiti in the Americas, Haiti Unbound engages with long- standing issues of imperialism and resistance culture in the transatlantic world. Glover’s timely project emphatically articulates Haiti’s regional and global centrality, combining vital ‘big picture’ reflections on the field of postcolonial studies with elegant analyses of the U philosophical perspective and creative practice of a distinctively Haitian literary phenomenon. Most importantly, perhaps, the book advocates for the inclusion of three largely unrecognized ND voices in the disturbingly fixed roster of writer-intellectuals who have thus far interested theorists of postcolonial (francophone) literature.

Writing as Resistance: Assia Djebar’s Vaste est la prison By Joyce Lazarus1 Abstract This essay examines contemporary Algerian women’s condition, as it is articulated in Djebar’s autobiographical novel, Vaste est la prison (1995). After giving an overview of modern Algerian history, I offer a reading of Djebar’s novel that takes account of its potential to produce social change. This essay demonstrates that Djebar blurs the boundaries between autobiography, fiction and history in order to fully utilize the subversive potential of writing. Using the perspective of new historicism, I show how Djebar responds to her country’s unilateralism in language and its exclusion of women by her unique rhetorical strategies, in order to restore women’s rightful place in Algerian history and present-day society.

French colonial education was problematic because it granted access to the colonizer’s culture, yet it also created a rupture in self-identity for Maghrebi students. In this thesis, I interrogate the literary representations of sites and sources of education by analyzing how these representations discuss the tension between formal French education and informal Maghrebi education. My thesis begins with a historical overview of colonial education in the Maghreb. I then discuss literary methods of negotiating identity, contrasting Arab and Western autobiography especially. Furthermore, I compare writing practices informed by a French education and a North African upbringing. Next, I compare formal and informal sites of education—the school, home and community—which articulate sources of alterity experienced during colonial childhood.
