Through an analysis of the historical origins and changing meanings of “ilustrado” in Philippine literary and nationalist discourse, this article looks at the politics of reading and writing that have shaped international and domestic reception of the novel. While the novel seeks to resignify the hitherto class- bound concept of “ilustrado” to include Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), historical and contemporary usages of the term present conceptual and practical difficulties and challenges that require a new intellectual paradigm for understanding Philippine society. Music in The Heart of Manila: Quiapo from the Colonial Period to Contemporary Times: Tradition, Change, Continuity Ma. Patricia Brillantes-Silvestre A brief history of Quiapo Quiapo is a key district of Manila, having as its boundaries the winding Pasig River and the districts of Sta. Cruz, San Miguel and Sampaloc. Its name comes from a floating water lily specie called kiyapo (Pistia stratiotes), with thick, light-green leaves, similar to a tiny, open cabbage. Pre-1800 maps of Manila show Quiapo as originally a cluster of islands with swampy lands and shallow waters (Andrade 2006, 40 in Zialcita), the perfect breeding place for the plant that gave its name to the district. Quiapo’s recorded history began in 1578 with the arrival of the Franciscans who established their main missionary headquarters in nearby Sta. Ana (Andrade 42), taking Quiapo, then a poor fishing village, into its sheepfold. They founded Quiapo Church and declared its parish as that of St. John the Baptist. The Jesuits arrived in 1581, and the discalced Augustinians in 1622 founded a chapel in honor of San Sebastian, at the site where the present Gothic-style basilica now stands. At about this time there were around 30,000 Chinese living in Manila and its surrounding areas, but the number swiftly increased due to the galleon trade, which brought in Mexican currency in exchange for Chinese silk and other products (Wickberg 1965). The Chinese, noted for their business acumen, had begun to settle in the district when Manila’s business center shifted there in the early 1900s (originally from the Parian/Chinese ghetto beside Intramuros in the 1500s, to Binondo in the 1850s, to Sta.Cruz at the turn of the century). -

Abad Literary Awards for Poetry and for Literary Criticism Awardees What is an Editor?: Ricardo de Ungria as Producer of Knowledge Julian dela Cerna At the 35th National Book Awards, the poet Ricardo M. de Ungria re- ceived Best Anthology in English for Habagatanon: Conversations with Six Davao Writers (2015), a work that consists of transcripts of de Un- gria’s interviews with writers whose identities are proffered to its readers as Davaoeños; a sampling of the writers’ poems or short stories; and an introduction that traces the literary history of the said city and provides an overview of the conversations. Taking inspiration from The Writer and His Milieu: An Oral History of First Generation Writers in English (1984) and Writers and Their Milieu: An Oral History of Second Generation Writers in English (1993), which are both edited by Edilberto N. Alegre and Doreen G. Fernandez, de Ungria’s book is credited to him, the editor, for the research, interviews, and selection of works that best represent the featured writers. The judges at the National Book Awards recognize the effort and describe the book as: [A] lively set of dialogues with local writers and its meticulous work of documentation are such an impressive and laudable effort to recover the writers’ memories of their craft, fashion a knot of lesser- known but nonetheless significant local histories, and weave them into the larger frame of our national imagining.1 By initiating the project, as the citation suggests, de Ungria acts as a producer of knowledge, recording an oral history of craftsmanship that could have otherwise been forgotten, if not completely left unknown. -

Fmandez Even before it acquired the name, the Spanish ranuela was a fact of Spanish theater. Defined as a "type of Spanish musical theater, both spoken and sung" (Alier et a1 1982, 121, it is usually dated in the early seventeenth century, when La seloa sin amor by Lope de Vega, with music by an unknown composer, was first presented in 1629 (Peiia y Goni 1%7, 25). Although now called "the first Spanish op era" (Peila y Goni 1%7, 281, it was then called an egloga pastoral, the term zarzuela only coming into use later in the reign of Philip N (1621-651, whose Palacio de la Zarzuela, a summer and hunting re- sort, came to be the scene of theatrical entertainments presented during royal feastdays and birthdays. -

TIONGSON Introduction In the Philippines, the sarsuwela is a play with songs and dances that is usually written in colloquial prose. Containing from one to fi ve acts, it presents typical Filipino characters moving within the framework of a love story and engaged in confl icts arising from contemporary social, political, economic, or cultural issues. Th e sarsuwela is also called sarsuela, zarzuela, sarsuelet, drama lirico, operetta, sarsuyla, dulang hinonihan, dulang inawitan, or dulang may awit in the various languages of the country. Very typical are the story and characters of the most famous sarsuwela of all time—the phenomenal Dalagang Bukid, a three-act sarsuwela by librettist Hermogenes Ilagan and composer Leon Ignacio, which premiered at the Teatro Zorilla in Manila in 1919. Atang de la Rama, the sarsuwela’s star, claimed that it had at least 1,000 performances before it was restaged at the Manila Grand Opera House in 1940 as a benefi cio for Hermogenes Ilagan. Magan& Pa ang higdig, on the other hand, takes on more qualitative aspects of contemporary life-the pervasive social unrest, the emergence of the Huk movement, the proliferation of private armies, corruption in the government, and other social realities. Such characters as Lino, Padre Amando, Miss Sanchez and Don Tito are types, but the novelist succeeds in endowing them with individuating traits The mode of representation is made to appro- ximate the reader's notion of everyday reality, for which reason the char- acters and situations are rendered more believable. The final thrust is basically Utopian, but there is an awareness that the real liberation of the farmers needs more than just a change of heart. -

Text and/as Travel The Self-Translations of Merlie M. Alunan Michael Carlo C. Villas Visayas State University Abstract Routes and roots form the dominant themes of the poetry of Merlie M. Alunan. Her translation practice exhibits these same tendencies as well in that her mobility across the islands of the Philippine South has allowed her to learn the Visayan languages from West to East: Hiligaynon and Kinaray-a in Western Visayas, Cebuano in Central Visayas, and Iligan City in Mindanao, and Waray in Eastern Visayas. It is not surprising that she would describe her writing in both Cebuano and English as a kind of “crossing borders” and “coming home” (“Crossing Borders, Coming Home” 138-145). This paper engages with Alunan’s self-translations from Cebuano, also called Sebwano or Sugbuanong Binisaya, to English or, as current Southeast Asian linguists and literary scholars put it, english. Selections are taken from her first poetry collection in Cebuano, Pagdakop sa Bulalakaw ug uban pang mga balak (To Catch A Firebird and Other Poems, Ateneo de Manila University Press 2012), which contain her translations of her poems. This paper argues how hetrolingualism or multilingualism brings a repertoire of strategies, though not mutually exclu- sive, in addressing a particular intertext, enabling the poet to navigate between signs. Alunan’s self-translations, for one, can be identified with the broader literary tradition of Philippine postcolonial Anglophone writing. In the same way, her self-translations amplified what was suggested in the Cebuano poems, VILLAS: TEXT AND/AS TRAVEL UNITAS 182 thus, adding more texture and intricacy to the self-translations. -

Dimalanta’s Poems* Ma. Socorro Q. Perez Ateneo de Manila University Abstract1 The study attempts to show that while Ophelia A. Dimalanta’s excellent New Critical training and education have rendered her a quintessential poet conscious of form, technique, and craftsmanship, which in turn, has been foregrounded by her equally New Critical-trained colleagues, this New Critical tradition has limited the study of her oeuvre to artistic structure and form, glossing over myriad concerns that the poems may have. The present study, in turn, has recuperated form, technique, and genre to encode the feminism that undergirds her poetic vision. Foregrounding Dimalanta’s vision enfleshed in art, the study recuperates the sexual/textual politics in Dimalanta’s Lady Polyester: Poems Past and Present from the lens of Toril Moi.
