GEOTHERMAL RESOURCE INDICATIONS OF THE GEOLOGIC DEVELOPMENT AND HYDROTHERMAL ACTIVITIES OF D.R.C. Getahun Demissie Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, [email protected] ABSTRACT Published sources report the occurrence of more than 135 thermal springs in D.R.C. All occur in the eastern part of the country, in association with the Western rift and the associated rifted and faulted terrains lying to its west. Limited information was available on the characteristics of the thermal features and the natural conditions under which they occur. Literature study of the regional distribution of these features and of the few relatively better known thermal spring areas, coupled with the evaluation of the gross geologic conditions yielded encouraging results. The occurrence of the anomalously large number of thermal springs is attributed to the prevalence of abnormally high temperature conditions in the upper crust induced by a particularly high standing region of anomalously hot asthenosphere. Among the 29 thermal springs the locations of which could be determined, eight higher temperature features which occur in six geologic environments were found to warrant further investigation. The thermal springs occur in all geologic terrains. Thermal fluid ascent from depth is generally influenced by faulting while its emergence at the surface is controlled by the near-surface hydrology. These factors allow the adoption of simple hydrothermal fluid circulation models which can guide exploration. Field observations and thermal water sampling for chemical analyses are recommended for acquiring the data which will allow the selection of the most promising prospects for detailed, integrated multidisciplinary exploration. An order of priorities is suggested based on economic and technical criteria. -

An understanding of surface water hydrological conditions prior to mine oil and gas development is essential to assess changes in water availability that could affect local users. Changes in hydrology can also affect water quality and other resources such as fish habitat, vegetation and wildlife. Hydrological data is further required to design mine oil and gas facilities (e.g. culverts, channels and storage ponds). The regional climate in the area is described as tropical with a distinct wet and dry season. Rainfall over the study area catchment varies between 700 mm and 1 400 mm/ annum. Results of Global Climate Change models indicate that Uganda is likely to experience more extreme periods of intense rainfall and drought, while the rainfall seasons become more erratic and/or infrequent. The project site is located within the Kingfisher catchment and drains westwards into the south eastern embankments of Lake Albert. Kingfisher catchment is associated with a very high western rift escarpment that drains into Lake Albert via several scattered streams and wetlands flowing westwards. -

Field wide correlation was attempted using additional geological and stratigraphical data from the larger Albertine Graben. The study involved the use of geological computing tools such as Petrel and Strata Bug softwares which allowed for the graphic plots of palynoflora, identification of marker species, species abundances, species first and last occurrences and the geological correlation of the two wells. The palynological marker species identified include; Podocarpus spp., Tournefortia spp., Praedapollis flexibilis, Peregrinipollis nigericus, Gramineae spp., Laevigatosporites spp. and Verrucatosporites usmensis. This association of species indicates Early Pliocene to Holocene age. These species were further used in delineating the Early Pliocene age of well T2 into TZ1a and TZ1b. The TZ1a subzone is marked by index species of Laevigatosporites spp., the quantitative top occurrence of Sapotaceae spp. and Verrucatosporites usmensis. TZ1b is marked by the presence of index species of Laevigatosporites spp. and top occurrence of Sapotaceae spp. -

PROJECT GNV011 : USING GIS/REMOTE SENSING FOR THE SUSTAINABLE USE OF NATURAL RESOURCES Water Sharing in the Nile River Valley Diana Rizzolio Karyabwite UNEP/DEWA/GRID -Geneva January -March 1999 January-June 2000 Water Sharing in the Nile River Valley ABSTRACT The issue of freshwater is one of highest priority for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The Nile Basin by its size, political divisions and history constitutes a major freshwater-related environmental resource and focus of attention. UNEP/DEWA/GRID-Geneva initiated several case studies stressing a river basin approach to the integrated and sustainable management of freshwater resources. In 1998 GRID-Geneva started a project on Water Sharing in the Nile River Basin. The Nile Valley project was set up to prepare an experimental methodology to identify the potential water-related issues in a watershed. The first stage of the project consisted of the compilation of available geoferenced data sets for the Nile valley region to be used as inputs for water bala nce modelling; and led to the elaboration of a first report1. Available georeferenced data sets have been stored in Arc/Info-ArcView. They serve as inputs for water balance modelling. General data on transboundary water sharing and on the Nile River Basin were also collected. Several international projects operating in the Nile River Valley are oriented towards Nile Basin water management, using GIS and remote sensing techniques. Therefore any continuation of the GRID- Geneva Nile River project should be linked with and integrated into one of these successful field programmes. 1 Booth J., Jaquet J.-M., December 1998. -
In the Name of Conservation: Eviction of the Batwa from Semuliki Forest
The trials of education for Batwa youth In 2015, the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church supported Batwa children to attend school at the Ntandi SDA Integrated Primary School. This was initially for the Batwa community but, because of discrimination IN THE NAME OF CONSERVATION and teasing, the Batwa children dropped out with the exception of Geoffrey Inzito’s brother, who eventually attained Senior Three level of education. Another attempt at education was made by one Pastor in the community but according to respondents, the school had only one class in which old and young alike were taught from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm. There was no reference to the national syllabus and eventually this intervention was abandoned. The eviction of the Batwa from Semuliki Forest, Bundibugyo The missionary congregation of the Evangelising Sisters of Mary through pastoral work on health and education came into contact with the Batwa community in Ntandi. Although they initially received a hostile reception because they did not offer food or hand-outs, the Batwa were persuaded to take up education again. The church then attempted to establish an adult and nursery school in the community. Together with the community the Parish constructed a semi-permanent church which doubled as a classroom, but the distractions in the slum environment hampered class work, including from uncontrolled attention by tourists and researchers. Pupils would also leave class to go to their mothers, to the market, to collect firewood or to harvest cocoa. Adults who were drinking alcohol and abusing drugs were not setting a good example for the children. -
