It runs the length of the entire country, beginning on the southern border with Brazil, and flowing all the way north to where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean. Like so much of Guyana, the Essequibo is brimming with a mind-boggling array of mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles. Though not nearly so overwhelming, there’s also a bit of evidence of human history on the river. Two centuries-old Dutch forts speak to the strategic importance of the Essequibo during colonial times. The river has an estimated 365 islands, a handful of which are home to river resorts and other accommodation, as well as resident wildlife. There is definitely adventure to be found on the Essequibo, the longest river in South America’s only English-speaking country. Twenty amphibian and 24 reptile species were collected. Only 40% of amphibians and 12.5% of reptiles were collected in both locations. This is one of the few collections made at upland (750–800 m) locations in the Guiana Shield. Introduction palm stands (Maurita flexuosa) (Hollowell et al. 2003). The Guiana Shield region of northeastern South America Immediately west of Kato is the nearby Chiung River, is one of the world’s areas of greatest biodiversity. Abstract The evolutionary history and taxonomy of worm-like snakes (scolecophidians) continues to be refined as new molec- ular data are gathered and analyzed. Here we present additional evidence on the phylogeny of these snakes, from morphological data and 489 new DNA sequences, and propose a new taxonomic framework for the family Typhlopi- dae. Of 257 named species of typhlopid snakes, 92 are now placed in molecular phylogenies along with 60 addition- al species yet to be described. Afrotyphlopinae subfam. nov. is distributed almost exclusively in sub-Saharan Africa and contains three genera: Afrotyphlops, Letheobia, and Rhinotyphlops. Asiatyphlopinae subfam. nov. is distributed in Asia, Australasia, and islands of the western and southern Pacific, and includes ten genera:Acutotyphlops, Anilios, Asiatyphlops gen. -
