PIRITA Protected Objects and Recreation Grounds PIRITA Protected objects and recreation grounds 1 Tallinn aims at obtaining the title of the European Green Capital by the year 2018. Achieving that goal requires a lot of responsible work so that the city would meet many environmental demands: green areas must be appropriate for everyone and be a part of the public domain; air quality and noise pollution, garbage disposal, water consumption and wastewater purification need to comply with standards. e image of a green capital is illustrated by environmentally friendly and safe beaches with excellent water quality and the functional infrastructure of natural values that allow city dwellers to spend a pleasant holiday here. Green areas in urban environments need to be preserved and used well. is is something we all have to work for in the name of the title of the Green Capital. Arvo Sarapuu Deputy Mayor of Tallinn 2 Pirita, a holiday area loved by the people of Tallinn, is situated in the north-eastern part of Tallinn. Pirita is popular both in summer as well as in winter, since here you can swim, take a walk in the woods or go skiing. Lillepi Park is very popular among roller skaters, who have a special roller skaters’ lane there. Pirita also offers plenty of activities for sailors, swimmers, bicyclists, skiers, athletes and recreational sports enthusiasts. The centre of Pirita grew up around the convent. It was established in the 15th century at the initiative of the people of Tallinn. The three-aisle church was completed in 1436 and was built on the land that had been gifted to the convent by the Livonian Order. The statutes of the convent were prepared in Sweden, Vadstena Abbey, under Pirita Convent the directions of Birgitta Gudmarsson, also known as Saint Birgitta (Bridget of Sweden). Pirita received its name from the name of the convent dedicated to Saint Birgitta. Pirita Convent was destroyed in the Livonian War. The monumental western gable, walls and foundation of the convent have been preserved. In summers, concerts are organised in the ruins of the convent. Next to the ruins, a new convent of the Bridgettine Order operates. 3 Reminders for beach visitors 1. Remember and respect the rules of conduct while at the beach. 2. Preserve nature. 3. At the beach, behave and act so that you yourself would like to go back. 4. Playing ball may disturb other holiday-makers – it is only allowed in places where others are not nearby. 5. Put your rubbish in the litter bin. We are very thankful if you pick up trash even left there by others. 6.     Andres Tvauri LATE MEDIEVAL HYPO CAUSTS WITH HEAT STORAGE IN ESTONIA INTRODUCTION As often happens with archaeologists, the stimulus for writing this article was a discovery unexpectedly brought to light from under the ground. In autumn 2007, I had the opportunity to study a large medieval heat storage furnace (Figs. 1 and 2) constituting the central part of the hot air heating system, or hypo caust, of a former grooms’ building. It was unexpectedly unearthed in the course of construction work in the outer bailey of the medieval Order Castle of Viljandi.1 The furnace found in the Viljandi Castle was a nice but, in the context of Estonian medieval fi nds, rather ordinary discovery. In Old Livonia, roughly corresponding to the territory of present-day Estonia and Latvia, hot air heating systems in which the core was a furnace fi lled with large stones, making it possible to store heat and rid oneself of the need to con- stantly heat the furnace or the fi replace, was used in the 13th to the 16th centuries before the introduction of Dutch tile stoves in castles, monas- teries and in residential and public buildings in towns. Starting in the 1930s, such furnaces, or their archaeologically studied remains, have been found in numerous medieval buildings in Estonia. The furnace found in Viljandi induced me to look for literature about hypo causts with heat storage. With the assistance of my colleague Erki Russow, the most thorough paper on medieval hot air heating systems ever written soon landed on my desk – a thesis published by the Ger- man researcher Klaus Bingenheimer in 1998, Die Luftheizungen des Mittelalters.

The western coast is exposed to waves generated by prevailing westerly winds, with NW waves dominant along the north-facing segment beside the Gulf of Finland, contrasting with southern relatively sheltered sectors located on the inner coasts of islands and along the Gulf of Livonia (Riga). The coastline classification is based on the concept of wave processes straightening initial irregular outlines via erosion of Capes/bay deposition, or a combination (Orviku, 1974, Orviku and Granö, 1992, Gudelis, 1967). Much coast (77%) is irregular with the geological composition of Capes and bays being either hard bedrock or unconsolidated Quaternary deposits, notably glacial drift.
