newsletter bmwor.org.nz october 2016 2 | bmwor newsletter | october 2016 President's Podium Winter is not quite done with us after all. After after a day of snow, hail, heavy rain and massive winds that brought down power lines in many parts of the country, I’m hoping spring will firmly re-establish its grasp in the next few days. Great to see so many people turn out at Avon City Motorcycles for our local “100 Years of BMW” celebration. Area Rep Jo did a fabulous job organising fresh baked pretzels, apple strudel, bmwor.org.nz bratwurst sausages and sauerkraut - the BBQ was going non-stop! There was plenty of interest in the line up of performance Send editorial copy to: machines; an R90S, an HP4 and a K1 each provoking much discussion. My thanks go The Editor to members who helped out and for making the bikes available and to Scott, Ross and 27 Omapere Road Eliot from Avon City for the endless supply of coffee and much good natured banter Kaikohe 0405 throughout the day. [email protected] Our first area ride the following day took us out to the Iron Ridge Quarry sculpture park in Amberley. Everyone made their own way, a gaggle of GS bikes taking a roundabout All other correspondence to: gravel option via Pyramid Valley, with a turnout of over 20 bikes – brilliant! Raymond The Secretary Herber, an extremely creative metal sculptor, demonstrated his iron-forging techniques BMWOR of NZ and told a great story of how he ended up buying the quarry and turning it into the P O Box 109-245 amazing venue it is. -

Some weeks later, I was up at it again, and I saw to my horror that the side armor was removed. In 2005 there were a lot of wrecks around the landscape, vehicles from 3 wars, so there was plenty to look at. At that time, people also began to cut up these wrecks. Whether it was being scrapped or local Arabs had taken sides to make a roof with it or the like, I do not know. -

June 8, 2020 2020 Vintage Motorcycle Days postponed In accordance with "Responsible RestartOhio" guidelines for holding public events in the Buckeye State in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the AMA and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course have postponed 2020 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. Held at Mid-Ohio in Lexington, Ohio for the past 24 years, the annual celebration of America's motorcycling heritage was scheduled to take place July 10-12. New dates for the event later in 2020 have not been finalized. Learn about the 'Lords of the Board Track' raffle bike "What if there were still a board-track racing class?" That was the question that motivated custom motorcycle builder Kevin Dunworth when he designed and built the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame's "Lords of the Board Track" raffle bike. This stunning machine started life as a 2003 Harley-Davidson 100th Anniversary Edition Sportster XL 883 Custom and now offers a powerful combination of early 20th-century styling and modern air-cooled V-twin performance. Follow the link for a chance to win this unique bike, and read more about its creation in the July edition of American Motorcyclist magazine. From the Archives Here's a photo of AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Joe Petrali aboard the Harley-Davidson streamliner on which he set an AMA land speed record. Petrali posted a two-way average speed of 136.183 mph on the sandy shores of Daytona Beach, Fla., on March 13, 1937. The streamliner featured a 61-cubic-inch, overhead-valve engine. Jagdpanzer 38 Hetzer Early
JAGDPANZER38 3711 HETZER EARLY eduard 1:35 FIRST, A FEW WORDS... ...ON THE WAR: The Second World War, from a German perspective, was not evolving favorably in 1943. Heavy losses at Stalingrad, the capitulation of German and Italian forces in North Africa in May, the defeat at the Battle of Kursk in July, and the Allied landings in Italy put increasing stresses on the German military. Furthermore, an increasingly concentrated fury from above in the form of the allied bombing campaign appeared that threatened to reduce the Reich to rubble. This campaign began to extract a heavy toll on the German ability to produce and support her weapons, including the production of tanks. On the other hand, war production in the Soviet Union and the United States steadily increased, and production figures attained were in the thousands. The German planners and designers were faced with some difficult decisions with respect on how to address the situation. One The original Pz.38(t) light tank effective method was to construct a series of tank hunter/destroyers on the chassis of existing tanks, foto V.Francev via MBI resulting in vehicles such as the Sturmgeschütz, for use in infantry support. One huge advantage of such vehicles was their relative simplicity when compared to the classic tank. There was no turret, and the complexities associated with the manufacture and installation of the turret were eliminated. The vehicles would be armed with Pak 39 anti tank guns of 75mm caliber, and were called Jagdpanzer (Fighter Tank - Tank Destroyer). Progressively, this concept was applied to other tank chassis as well. -

Originally published in 1986 as The Publication of Allied Procedure 6 (APP-6), NATO's Military Symbol for Land-Based Systems, this standard has grown for years and is now in its fifth version (APP-6D). These symbols are designed to improve NATO's joint reliability by providing a standard set of general symbols. The APP-6 forms a joint military symboler system for land, air, space and formations and sea-based units, which can be displayed either for automatic map display systems or for manual map marking. It covers all joint services and can be used by them. The history of the symbol of the first basic military map was first used by western forces in decades following the end of the Napoleonic War. During World War I, there was a level of harmony between the British and French systems, including the use of red color for enemy and blue forces for allies; The British previously used red for friendly soldiers because of the traditional red coat of British soldiers. However, the system is now widely used based on those created by the U.S. -
GURPS WWII Classic
World War II raged from the deserts of North Africa to the jungles of the South Pacific, from the mountaintops of the Alps to the beaches of Normandy, across (and under) the high seas, and through the skies above it all. Soldiers in all of these places relied upon the machines of war: bombers, fighters, tanks, jeeps, ships, submarines, landing craft, and much more. GURPS WWII: Motor Pool has a huge variety of historically accurate vehicles from mankind’s greatest conflict. Many of the vehicles were common; others were rare or even unique. From the stodgy General Lee tank to the earliest helicopters and the wildly impractical Maus, Motor Pool has tons of new gear for every GURPS WWII player. Motor Pool also gathers in one place all the refinements to the vehicle design system that have evolved since the original corebook came out, as well as a new system to describe any WWII-era conveyance in a few simple steps. These additions include scores of new weapons to be fitted on your war machines – some historical and some products of the imagination. On top of all that, Motor Pool has advice on S how to integrate vehicles into a roleplaying T E campaign, with details on how vehicle crews V really lived and fought, from the difficulties of E supply to getting their machine moving at all.
