The report was prepared for section 46 of the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013, in accordance with the requirements of that Act and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983. It was approved by the Board on 11 September 2019 and provides a comprehensive review of the ABC’s performance and delivery in line with its Charter remit. The ABC continues to be the home and source of Australian stories, told across the nation and to the world. The Corporation’s commitment to innovation in both storytelling and broadcast delivery is stronger than ever, as the needs of its audiences rapidly evolve in line with technological change. Australians expect an independent, accessible public broadcasting service which produces quality drama, comedy and specialist content, entertaining and educational children’s programming, stories of local lives and issues, and news and current affairs coverage that holds power to account and contributes to a healthy democratic process. Painting Virtue: a portrait of Laurie Baymarrwangga BENTLEY JAMES explained. At this time in her life Baymarrwangga is looking to provide resources for children’s education in the region. This year she wants to provide a trilingual Yan-nhangu dictionary to the children for free. Laurie Baymarrwangga has been working on a trilingual Yan-nhangu dictionary project to support language education on the islands. In 1993 there were only 300 of her words documented, now she has recorded some 4000, containing the local knowledge of countless generations. Learning local language, aside from the positive health outcomes and psychological resilience attending bilingualism, promotes the intergenerational transmission of local knowledge to a new generation. This dictionary brings together two Yolngu languages, Yan- nhangu and Dhuwal/a (6000 speakers) with English, as a learning resource to fill the vacuum left by the removal of bilingual education. Baymarrwangga plans to give this beautiful full colour dictionary to all Yolngu children, their schools and homelands throughout the region as a gift before Christmas 2013. Baymarrwangga’s concern for her country’s vibrant Gillian Warden, Virtue (portrait of Laurie Baymarrwangga, 2013, 120 x 120cm; linguistic and customary heritage generated a family of image courtesy the artist interrelated projects under the Crocodile Islands Initiative. Designed to support language, livelihoods and gentle sea breeze touches the tamarind trees of homelands, the initiative aims to skill and employ people Milingimbi where Laurie Baymarrwangga is on country, follow traditional law, and protect the sitting in the dappled shade on the beach of her linguistic, cultural and biological diversity of the Islands. -

A whole new world: Global revolution and Australian social movements in the long Sixties Jon Piccini BA Honours (1st Class) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2013 School of History, Philosophy, Religion & Classics Abstract This thesis explores Australian social movements during the long Sixties through a transnational prism, identifying how the flow of people and ideas across borders was central to the growth and development of diverse campaigns for political change. By making use of a variety of sources—from archives and government reports to newspapers, interviews and memoirs—it identifies a broadening of the radical imagination within movements seeking rights for Indigenous Australians, the lifting of censorship, women’s liberation, the ending of the war in Vietnam and many others. It locates early global influences, such as the Chinese Revolution and increasing consciousness of anti-racist struggles in South Africa and the American South, and the ways in which ideas from these and other overseas sources became central to the practice of Australian social movements. This was a process aided by activists’ travel. Accordingly, this study analyses the diverse motives and experiences of Australian activists who visited revolutionary hotspots from China and Vietnam to Czechoslovakia, Algeria, France and the United States: to protest, to experience or to bring back lessons. While these overseas exploits, breathlessly recounted in articles, interviews and books, were transformative for some, they also exposed the limits of what a transnational politics could achieve in a local setting. Australia also became a destination for the period’s radical activists, provoking equally divisive responses. -

On February 3rd, 1939, hundreds of Yorta Yorta chose to leave their homes on Cummeragunja mission, located on the banks of the Murray River in New South Wales, in protest at harsh conditions and treatment by the mission’s manager. Many opted to start new lives over the border in Victoria. -
What Was the 1946 Pilbara Strike?
So what was the 1946 Pilbara Strike? 75 years ago, on May 1, 1946, hundreds of Aboriginal workers began walking off dozens of pastoral stations across the vast Pilbara region to fight for wages and better living conditions. Committed Aboriginal leaders had for months secretly travelled to stations all over the Pilbara to alert Aboriginal workers to the strike, timed to take place just before shearing began in May. After a hard-fought three-year struggle, the strikers finally achieved their original aim of ‘30 bob a week’, as well as establishing their own communities independent of the previous domination of ‘pastoralist, policeman and native welfare officer’. The Strike was supported ‘down south’ by church and women’s groups, lawyers, unions, and the Australian Communist Party: the WA Government’s hand was finally forced in July 1949, when the Fremantle-based Seamen’s and Lumpers’ Unions voted to black ban wool from Pilbara stations still holding out against the Aboriginal strikers’ demands. The Pilbara Strike movement reshaped colonial race relations in WA and helped to inspire later and better-known acts of Aboriginal resistance like the 1966 Wave Hill walk off in the Northern Territory and the 1980 Noonkanbah blockade in the Kimberley region. Since then, the 1946 Pilbara Strike has been recognised by the ACTU as the longest strike in Australian history, and has been regularly commemorated by WA unions at their annual May Day event on Fremantle Esplanade. This May Day weekend we invite you to join us and members of the Pilbara Strike families in Fremantle to honour the courage and determination of the strikers, and commemorate this pivotal, yet little known event in our shared history. -
