Parent Bulletin Week Beginning: Monday 14 October 2019 Week A Quick links: Back to top Top 3 items for students to focus on: Top 3 things we have asked students to focus on: 1. “When ‘I’ is replaced by ‘We’, illness becomes wellness.” 2. Before you say something, think how you would feel if someone said that to you. Speak with kindness and you are more likely to be treated with kindness by others. 3. Year 7 to 11 students: Be fully prepared and make the most of all the opportunities during Big Picture Day on Thursday. Year 12 students: Be fully prepared for the university/careers visits taking place on Thursday 17 October. Think about the things you want to find out. Year 13 students: Make sure you answer the question ‘so what?’ when talking about your interests in your personal statement. Talk about what you have learnt from the things that you have done rather than listing lots of things. Your statement will be much more impressive. @HarrogateGS @6thformhgs @HGS_SLT Parent Bulletin Week Beginning: Monday 14 October 2019 Week A Dates for Your Diary Back to top Important Dates: • Year 11 Parents’ Consultation evening – Tuesday 15 October – 4-7pm • Big Picture Day for Year 7 to 11 – Thursday 17 October • Year 12 University and apprenticeship visits – Thursday 17 October • Year 13 Home Study Day – Thursday 17 October • “Pink up your business dress”, Sixth Form students – Friday 19 October, contribute £2 to Cancer Research • PTA quiz – Friday 18 October – 7:30pm, Main Hall • HOPEWALK – Sunday 20 October, 10am, Swinsty reservoir • “Not” the BTEC gig – Wednesday 23 October, 7pm, Sixth Form Forum • October Half Term – Monday 28 October to Friday 1 November All upcoming events, term dates and holidays: • Link to school web calendar Information Back to top Shelter in Place We have no indication that there is any particular threat to our school or any other school, but we feel that it is important to respond to national advice by preparing thoroughly for events that could threaten the safety of our staff and students. Although such an event could be related to a terrorist event, it is also possible that events such as a gas leak or chemical escape could cause us to sound the bell. Shelter in place is a safety procedure that covers extreme hazards such as a smoke cloud, local chemical leak or an intruder on site. A series of normal bells will signal shelter in place. The bells will stop ringing when it is all clear. Students will be given the following instructions during form next week: • In the unlikely event of hearing these bells during lessons, they must follow the instructions of their class teacher and remain in the classroom. • If they are walking on a corridor during lesson time, they must enter the nearest classroom and follow the instructions from the teacher. • In the very unlikely event of hearing these bells at break or lunch, they must quickly and calmly enter the school and go to the next lesson on their timetable. They must then follow the instruction of their teacher. @HarrogateGS @6thformhgs @HGS_SLT Parent Bulletin Week Beginning: Monday 14 October 2019 Week A Back to top HOPEWALK 2019: 10am on Sunday 20 October at Swinsty reservoir. Ten classes across Year 7, 8 and 9 will be chosen to undertake the training. Careers Fair – Thursday 28 November 2019, 7pm to 8:30pm This will be our eighth annual Careers Fair and is open to students in Years 7 – 13 of Harrogate Grammar School together with their parents/carers. We typically have around 80 employer/business stands attending the event and over 500 students and parents who have come each year. We aim to offer students the opportunity to explore a wide range of career paths and support them in their decision-making through individual advice and guidance. Could you help? Just a couple of hours of your time could help our current students make informed decisions about their future, by encouraging them to seek out information regarding courses and career paths that interest them! We have had a number of parents, local businesses and former HGS alumni who have enjoyed supporting this event in the past and it has been greatly appreciated by our students. If you feel you are able to share your knowledge and expertise at the Careers Fair, either as an individual talking about your profession or by representing a business or company, then please contact: Mrs Hinkins Personal Development Coordinator and Careers Leader tel: (01423) 531127 – ext 241 or email: [email protected] @HarrogateGS @6thformhgs @HGS_SLT Parent Bulletin Week Beginning: Monday 14 October 2019 Week A Big Picture Day – Thursday 17 October All students in Years 7-11 will have the opportunity to participate in an exciting Big Picture Day on Thursday 17 October.
