IODP advances the scientific understanding of the Earth and unifies the international research community to explore Earth’s last exploration frontier, the ocean’s seafloors. The current ANZIC consortium joined the new phase of IODP in September 2013. Australia’s participation is funded under an Australian Research Council Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) grant, whilst New Zealand’s participation is provided principally through GNS Science and other partnership contributions from NZ universities and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research. Following a successful research career at CSIRO (1985-2004), Dr Poiner served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Institute of Marine Science from 2004 to 2011. He was a member of the International Scientific Steering Committee of the Census of Marine Life from 2002 and its Chair from 2007 to 2013. From 2012 to 2016 he was Chair of the Gladstone Healthy Harbour Partnership Science Panel. Ian is also the Chairperson of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Chair CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere Advisory Committee, Patron of the Australian Marine Science Association and member of the Board of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. A/Prof. Armand completed her PhD in 1998 at the Australian National University under the guidance of Prof. Patrick DeDeckker and the late Dr Jean-Jacques Pichon (Univ. Bordeaux I, France). She held post-doctoral positions at the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystem CRC in Hobart, Tasmania, and was the first Australian to be awarded a European Union Incoming Marie Curie Fellowship (FP6, 2005 - 07), which she undertook at the University of Marseille, France.

For decades, Captain Flinders’ grave had been concealed beneath Euston train station, the site of the former St James’ burial ground. The School review highlighted shortcomings in the School’s governance and strategic planning processes. This triggered a complete overhaul of the School’s governance structure, replacing the School’s previous cluster and disparate research group structure with seven similar sized and coherent research groups: Biogeochemistry, Climate and Fluid Physics, Earth Dynamics, Experimental Petrology, Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry, Palaeoenvironments, and Seismology and Mathematical Geophysics. Three new portfolios were created: Research, Engagement and Experience, alongside the existing Education and Higher Degree Research portfolios, with each headed by an Associate Director representing the portfolio on the School’s Executive.
