Early technol- ogies for making the difficult observations were adequate only to depict large-scale, quasi-steady flows. With the electronic revolution of the past 501 years, the emergence of geophysical fluid dynamics, the strongly inhomogeneous time-dependent nature of oceanic circulation physics finally emerged. Mesoscale (balanced), submesoscale oceanic eddies at 100-km horizontal scales and shorter, and internal waves are now known to be central to much of the behavior of the system. Ocean circulation is now recognized to involve both eddies and larger-scale flows with dominant elements and their interactions varying among the classical gyres, the boundary current regions, the Southern Ocean, and the tropics. 1. Patricia Margaret Millar Date ii Abstract Photographers made a major contribution to the recording of the Heroic Era of Antarctic exploration. By far the best known photographers were the professionals, Herbert Ponting and Frank Hurley, hired to photograph British and Australasian expeditions. But a great number of photographs were also taken on Belgian, German, Swedish, French, Norwegian and Japanese expeditions. These were taken by amateurs, sometimes designated official photographers, often scientists recording their research. Apart from a few Pole-reaching images from the Norwegian expedition, these lesser known expedition photographers and their work seldom feature in the scholarly literature on the Heroic Era, but they, too, have their importance. They played a vital role in the growing understanding and advancement of Antarctic science; they provided visual evidence of their nation’s determination to penetrate the polar unknown; and they played a formative role in public perceptions of Antarctic geopolitics. -

DEEP SEA DRILLING PROJECT UNIVERS ITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY Scientific Objectives and Highlights The goal of the original 18-month Deep Sea Drilling Project was to gather scientific information which would aid in the determination of the age and processes of development of the ocean basins in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The primary strategy to secure this information was to drill deep holes in the ocean floor, relying largely on technology already developed by the petroleum industry. Cores were collected and in-hole measurements of physical properties made. Cores from the ocean floor provide reference sections for future studies in biostratigraphy, physical stratigraphy, and paleomangetism and afford new studies of the physical and chemical aspects of sediment provenance, transportation, deposition and diagenesis. In-hole measurements provide petrophysical data which permit inference of lithology over intervals where no cores were secured. Scientific objectives for the three-year extension period were directed largely toward an understanding of the interac,tion of the continents and ocean basins and is beins prosecuted mainly in outer fringes of the ocean areas. or in places that are intermediate between oceanic and continental. Extension period drilling and coring has been done in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Mediterranean Sea and Caribbean Sea. It is continuing in the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. A preliminary description of core material is done initially by ship-board scientists during each of the 55-day cruises of the drilling research vessel, Glomar Challenger, and at several shore-base laboratories. Core samples and des criptions are then distributed for research purposes to qualified scientists through-out the world without regard to their affiliation. -

Janice Cavell1 (Received 31 January 2018; accepted in revised form 1 May 2018) ABSTRACT. In 1855 a parliamentary committee concluded that Robert McClure deserved to be rewarded as the discoverer of a Northwest Passage. Since then, various writers have put forward rival claims on behalf of Sir John Franklin, John Rae, and Roald Amundsen. This article examines the process of 19th-century European exploration in the Arctic Archipelago, the definition of discovering a passage that prevailed at the time, and the arguments for and against the various contenders. It concludes that while no one explorer was “the” discoverer, McClure’s achievement deserves reconsideration. Joseph Hooker first learned that Charles Darwin believed in the transmuta- tion of species in 1844. For the next 14 years, Hooker remained a "nonconsenter" to Darwin's views, resolving to keep the question of species origin "subservient to Botany instead of Botany to it, as must be the true relation." Hooker placed particular emphasis on the need for any theory of species origin to support the broad taxonomic delimitation of species, a highly contentious issue.
