Rich Fetchiet Coordinator of Baseball Umpires

Rich Fetchiet was named Big 12 Conference Coordinator of Baseball Umpires in August 2005. He has over 35 years of collegiate, national and international umpiring and umpire-related administrative experience.

Fetchiet is also currently the coordinator for the Big East, Big Ten, Conference USA and Mid-American conferences and the . He is a member of the NCAA National Umpire Program Advisory Committee in addition to the NCAA Baseball Rules Editorial Committee. Fetchiet has served as the Baseball Secretary-Rules Editor for the NCAA and Chair of the ABCA Rules Committee. He is active in numerous officiating organizations and is a teacher and instructor at umpire camps and clinics across the country.

Fetchiet retired from active umpiring after the 2000 season. Prior to that he umpired numerous Division I conference tournaments and made three appearances, including serving as the plate umpire for the 1999 national championship game. Included among Rich’s international tournaments are the Pan Am Games, World Cup Qualifier, Intercontinental Cup, World Championships and the Olympic Games. In 1997 he was named Umpire of the Year by the International Baseball Association.

Fetchiet is a higher education administrator at the University of School of Dentistry. He and his wife, Kay, and two children currently reside in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship returns to Oklahoma City’s RedHawks Ballpark on May 25-29.

RedHawks Ballpark, which was opened on April 2, 1998 and seats 13,066 fans, serves as the home facility for the Class AAA Oklahoma City RedHawks, an affiliate of the Astros. It has hosted 12 baseball championships in the league’s 15-year tenure, including this season’s event. Overall, three venues have sponsored the tournament: All-Sports Stadium, Oklahoma City (1997); RedHawks Ballpark (1998-2001, ‘03, ‘05-10) and The Ballpark in Arlington (2002, ‘04).

Past postseason championship winners include Kansas (2006), Nebraska (1999-2001, ‘05), Oklahoma (1997), Oklahoma State (2004), Texas (2002, ‘03, ‘08-09), Texas A&M (2007, ‘10) and Texas Tech (1998).

THE ROAD TO OMAHA The 64-team bracket provides for 16 four-team double elimination Regionals; and eight two-team, best-of-three Super Regionals, with the eight winners advancing to Omaha for the NCAA Men’s College World Series.

The champions of all 29 NCAA Division I conferences automatically qualify for the championship. The remaining 35 teams will be selected at- large. The Division I Baseball Committee will also consider regular season conference standings and/or conference postseason competition.

THE BIG 12 AT THE MCWS In 2010, Oklahoma represented the Big 12 Conference, filling the final spot in the MCWS field. The Sooners shut out the No. 5 national seed Virginia, 11-0 in the Charlottesville Super Regional to advance. OU earned its first trip to Omaha since 1995 and 10th appearance overall.
