Beinfemur 4,5, II. 7, III. 4, IV. 5,5 mm. L. des I. Beines 17, II. 30, III. 21, IV. 25 mm. Fläche des Cephalothcrax, des Abdominalscutums, der freien Dorsal- und Ventralsegmente des Abdomens und der Coxen gleich- mäßig rauh bekörnelt. Augenhügel so lang wie breit wie hoch, oben kaum längsgefurcht und überall fein und regellos bekörnelt. Höckerchen der Coxenrandreihen dreispitzig. I. Chelicerenglied dorsal bekörnelt; II. Glied glatt. Palpen dünn; Femur ventral dicht bezähnelt; Patella und Tibia rings dicht bezähnelt; Patella apical-innen mit deutlicher Apophyse; Tibia 2i4™al so lang wie breit; Tarsus unbewehrt. Beine dünn, relativ kurz; alle Femora bezähnelt; nur IL Femur mit 3 Pseudogelenken, übrige Femora ohne solche. Färbung des Körpers dorsal und ventral schmutzigbraun. Cephalothorax jederseits blaß gesprenkelt. Augenhügel blaßgelb; von hier zieht sich über das Abdomen ein unscharfer, rostgelber Medianstreif bis zur III. Area des Dorsalscutums ; dieser Streif hört auf der IV. Area quer abgestutzt auf in Gestalt einer rost- gelben, unscharfen Querbinde. Cheliceren blaßgelb. Palpen dunkelbraun, nur Tarsus blaßgelb. Beine dunkelbraun; Femora und Tibien reichlich rostgelb geringelt. Venezuela (zwischen Maracaibo und der Sierra de la Perija). 2 ?. Arachnologica varia xix-xx. Von Embrik Strand, Berlin. Eine mit Philaeus chrysops (Poda) verwandte nord- afrikanisehe Saltieide. Ich habe seinerzeit eine aus Alt-Saida stammende weibliche Salticide zur Bestimmung gehabt, die als mit Philaeus chrysops (Poda) verwandt, aber verschieden erkannt und durch folgende Zeilen beschrieben wurde. Die Beschreibung ist etwas unvoll- © BiodiversityAxachnologica Heritage Library, http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/;varia X]!X— XX. www.zobodat.at 159 ständig, da eine Möglichkeit, sie jetzt zu ergänzen aber nicht vor- liegt, so lasse ich sie jetzt zur Veröffentlichung gelangen, so wie sie ist. um auf die interessante Form aufmerksam zu machen. Ich nenne sie Philaeus conugatulus m. $ Cephalothorax ohne Mandibeln 3 mm lang, 2,2 mm breit.- Länge des etwas korrugierten Abdomen ca. 5 mm. Mandibeln 1.5 mm lang. Beine: I Coxa + Trochanter 1.2, Femur 1.8, Patella -f Tibia 2.1, Metatarsus + Tarsus 1.5 mm; II bzw. 1.1, 1.5, 1.8, 1.3 mm; III bzw. 1.2,2, 2, 1.9 mm; IV bzw. 1.2,2, 2, 2 mm. Total- länge also: I 6.6; II 5.7; III 7.1; IV 7.2 mm. Also: Patella + Tibia III = IV und die Beine kürzer als bei Phil, chrysops. Metatarsus III mit 2 (oder wenn man will 3) Verticillen, von denen der basale aus 4 Stacheln besteht. Tibia I mit 3 unregel- mäßig angeordneten Lateralstacheln vorn, unten innen 1.1, unten außen 1.1.1; Metatarsus I unten 2.2, vorn 1.1, hinten 1. (1?) Stacheln. Tibia II wie I, jedoch unten innen nur 1 Stachel; Meta- tarsus II wie I. Die Stacheln des Metatarsus IV so angeordnet wie die des Metatarsus III. — Die M.-A. stehen genau in der Mitte. Vordere Augenreihe ganz schwach recurva. — Epigyne weicht von derjenigen von Phil, chrysops etwas ab. — Das Patellarglied der Palpen erscheint in Dorsalansicht wenig länger als breit, das Tibialglied etwa noch ein halbes mal länger als das Patellarglied und beide zusammen so lang wie das Tarsalglied. Das Tibialglied erscheint von oben gesehen gegen die Spitze ganz schwach erweitert. Das Femoralglied hat oben an der Spitze 1 —2 kurze gebogene Stachelborsten. Die Färbung stimmt, soweit bei der nicht tadellosen Er- haltung erkennbar ist, mit der Form xanthomelas C. L. Koch am besten überein, jedoch so, daß die Seiten des Abdomen etwas weniger lebhaft gefärbt sind und der Mittelstreifen schmäler ist. — Die vorderen M.-A. sind grün, die S.-A. schwarz. Cilien, Bart und Schuppenbekleidung des Clypeus rostfarbig gelb und ähnlich gefärbte Schuppen tragen die Seiten des Cephalothorax und das Augenfeld. Die Palpen sind bräunlichgelb, das FemoralgHed am hellsten, Tibial- und Tarsalglied an der Basis vorn mit einem dunklen Fleck; die Behaarung der Palpen ist lang, weißlich, mit insbesondere an der Spitze dunkleren Haaren eingestreut. Von Herrn Prof. Karsch wurde mir seinerzeit ein Verzeichnis der von ihm bestimmten Arachniden aus der griechisch-klein- asiatischen Reiseausbeute E. v. Oertzen's zur beliebigen Ver- wendung übergeben, das ich im folgenden zur Veröffentlichung gelangen lasse, und zwar in der Form, wie es mir vorliegt, ohne die systematischen Bezeichnungen zu modernisieren oder sonstige Änderungen vorzunehmen. Beitr. 48/1 235-263 30.07.2016 On the Staphylinidae of the Greek island Karpathos (Insecta: Coleoptera) Volker ASSING A b s t r a c t : A study of 931 specimens of Staphylinidae collected in the Greek island Karpathos in December 2015 and January 2016 yielded 59 species, among them eight undescribed island-endemic species and three first records from Greece. A checklist including also previously recorded species is provided. The currently known fauna of Karpathos is composed of 69 species of Staphylinidae and shows stronger affinities to the fauna of Turkey and the Aegean islands off the Turkish coast than to Crete and mainland Greece (including the Pelopónnisos). Ten species (14.5 %) are island endemics, three of which (two of the Pselaphinae and one of the Scydmaeninae) are undescribed. Two myrmecophilous species that were previously considered island endemics of Crete and Rhodos, respectively, are present also in Karpathos. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT The theoretical objective of this thesis is of a synthetic nature, for it makes an effort to build up a picture of human activity on the islands concerned, that is their social, economic and cultural evolution in Pre­ historic times. However, the method followed is largely analytical, since archaeological data are combined with results from other disciplines in order to reconstruct the Prehistory of these islands, no matter how incomplete and unambitious this may be. A total of 71 Prehistoric sites have been identified so far. Most of them are on elevated locations near the coast and date from Middle Minoan III to Late Minoan I. Late and Final Neolithic occupation is also represented by numerous sites, whereas the scantiness of Early Bronze Age sites may be attributed to the deficiency of surface investigation and lack of strati­ graphy.

Two new species, representing the first records of the genus from Greece, are described and figured: E. cycladicum n. sp. from 13 of the southern Aegaean islands and E. armathianum n. sp. from the island Armathia in the Karpathos archipelago. The genus Paxodillidium Schmalfuss, 1985 is diagnosed. The diagnostic characters of Paxo- dillidium schawalleri Schmalfuss, 1985 are figured. New records of the species are given for four Greek Ionian islands. All records of the treated species are mapped. Dodecanese’s enchanting beaches are one of the main attractions for millions of tourists every year. The Dodecanese island group is in the southeastern part of the Aegean Sea, the sunniest corner of Greece; it comprises twelve large islands and numerous smaller ones, each one with a different character.     Elias Kulukundis Chapter 1- Arrival I did not see Kasos until I was twenty-seven, when I made this journey. I have never lived there, and neither have my parents. They were born on Syros, another island two hundred miles up the Aegean. I was born in London, came to America when I was three, and have lived there ever since. Only my grandparents were native Kasiots, all four of them. My grandfathers were sea captains, and at the turn of the century they emigrated to Syros, then the largest port in Greece. After the First World War, they emigrated to a still larger port: London. My father and his brothers took over the shipping business their father had begun. Eventually, in 1939, my parents extended the emigration farther to America. They settled in Rye, a suburb of New York, where I spent all but the first three years of childhood. This journey will be back along the course of that emigration. The destination is Kasos, the final island. On the way back we come first to Syros, capital and metropolis of the Cyclades. Syros was where my parents met for the first time, when my father was six years old and my mother was an infant. It was at my mother’s christening. My mother was in her godfather’s arms; my father was standing beside his own mother, the youngest in a row of five brothers ranging in age from six to twenty.
