Corresponding author: E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Barbus miliaris was described in 1863 by De Filippi on the basis of three specimens collected from the endorheic Namak Lake basin (a stream near Tehran). But it was later assigned to the subspecies of Barbus lacerta, B. cyclolepis or Luciobarbus mursa. Here, we revalidate and re- describe it. Barbus miliaris is distinguished from the other species of Barbus by having more scales along the lateral line (69-87, mode 77 vs. 50-66, mode 57 in B. cyri; 52-66, mode 61 in B. lacerta) and 80-95% of the posterior margin of the last unbranched dorsal-fin ray covered with denticles (vs. 60-70%). Barbus miliaris is also distinguished from B. cyri by having more predorsal scales (37-47, mode 42 vs. 24-34, mode 29); a narrower upper lip (its width 4-6 vs. 7-9 %HL). In B. miliaris, the maxillary barbel is longer than that of the others (26-41 vs. 12–32 %HL in other species, not reaching to posterior eye margin vs. reaching in B. lacerta).     Travel to Tehran-Iran ABOUT IRAN- HISTORY & HERITAGE The plateau of Iran is among the oldest civilization centers in the history of humanity and has an important place in archeological studies. The history of settlement in the Plateau of Iran, from the new Stone Age till the migration of Aryans to this region, is not yet very clear. But there is reliable evidence indicating that Iran has been inhabited since a very long time ago. Settlement centers have emerged close to water resources like springs, rivers, lakes or totally close to Alborz and Zagross mountains. After the decline of the Achievement dynasty, and the destruction of Persepolis by Alexander, his successors the Seleucid dominated over Iran for a short period of time. During this time the interaction between Iranian and Hellenic cultures occurred. Around the year 250 BC, the Parthians, who were an Aryan tribe as well as horse riders, advanced from Khorassan towards the west and south-west and founded their empire over Iran Plateau in Teesfoon. This empire survived only until the year 224 AD. The Sassanian, after defeating the last Parthia n king in 225 AD, founded a new empire which lasted until mid-7th century AD. With respect to its political, social, and cultural characteristics, the ancient period of Iran (Persia) is one of the most magnificent epochs of Iranian history. Bond The freshwater fish fauna of Iran is representedby 3 classes, 1 orders, 31 familIes, 90 genera, 269species and 58 subspecIes. This includes 8 orders, 10 families, 14 generaand 33 species with marine representatives that live at least partof the tixne in freshwater. Also included are one family, 7 genera,9 species and 4 subspecies introduced into Iran. Overhalf the species and nearly half the genera are in the family Cypririidae; over75% of the genera and species are in the orderCypriniformes. The fish fauna may be separated into threemajor groups. The largest and nst diverse is the Sannatian Fauna,which includes the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Lake Bezaiyeh, Rhorasan,Isfahan, Dashte-Kavir, and the four subbasins of the Namak LakeBasins. Of the fish found in Iran, 14 of 31 earnilies, 48 of 90 genera,127 of 269 species and 46 of 58 subspecies are found in theSarmatian Fauna. Endemisa is low, and nstly expressed at the subspecific level.The fauna contains marine relicts from the Sannatian Sea and recentinmigrants with strong relationships to the fishes of Europe, the Black Seaand northern Asia. The marine relicts are absent outside the Caspian Sea Basin, where the fauna is best described as a depauperate extensionof the Caspian and Aral Sea faunas.
